TV Meme: Day 2
Day 01 - A show that should never have been canceled: Firefly
Day 02 - A show that you wish more people were watching:

I have no idea what the ratings are for various shows. I'm assuming that In Plain Sight must have had some issues because they've "re-vamped" the program and now it feels more pedestrian.

The focus on Mary's family life with her mother and sister is being downplayed/eliminated and I'm sorry for it. Yes, at times it was overdone but it was wonderful to have a show that revolved around three flawed but strong women. Sadly, the show's no longer centered around women talking to women about something other than men and recurring characters of color are being eliminated/sidelined. I still enjoy the show because Mary is a kick ass character whom I enjoy watching, the interaction with her partner Marshal Marshall Mann is always a winner, and I'm happy to see Paul Ben-Victor (Invisible Man). It just isn't the same.

I have to disagree with you on this! Respectfully, of course. :D

I'm actually glad they're downplaying Mary's mother and sister, because I never thought they were strong but flawed. I found them frustrating and irritating. Raph was fine, but I'm not exactly sad he's gone. I like the increased emphasis on the cases, rather than her home life. On episodes like last night, when they focus on Mary's sister and ~sigh~ new brother, the episode feels bogged down and weighted.

It could just be that I don't like the actress that plays Brandi, and I don't like the guy playing her brother. But give me a solid hour like "When Mary Met Marshall," focusing on the partnership between these two, I'm in heaven. I think Mary and Marshall is one of the best partnerships on TV. And thankfully they're not toning down Mary's kick-ass personality. Did you notice in one episode, when Mary and two male agents had to rescue someone, Mary attacked while Marshall got the witness to safety? It's the little things like that that make me think this is an awesome show for women characters. I don't think we need another episode about Jinx struggling with alcoholism.

That said, it's good that Jinx and Brandi weren't completely written out and are still recurring. They're very good in small doses. :D

I knew it would be a controversial opinion. :) I felt like once Jinx finally took steps to defeat her alcoholism and put together her life, she's gone. We got the wallowing without the payoff. I liked all of the actresses so I had no issues there.

I haven't seen last night's episode. I'm recording now and only watching when the mood strikes. That's a sign that I'm on the way to being an occasional watcher rather than a weekly one.

I agree that the Mary/Marshall partnership is unique on television and worth tuning in for. I just liked that men were present -- and important -- but weren't the kernal of the show. That's rare on television and IPS was the only action show. I'm looking forward to the Rizzolli and Isles.

It's important to be able to debate shows with your friends! :D And I can understand that issue, not getting the payoff with Jinx. But like I said, small doses... I like that she got her life together enough to move out, and she has that dance class. And going out to hug Mary after Raphe left? That was so great.

I understand that issue. Strong women leads are so rare, but USA seems to be trying. They have Mary leading IPS, and Covert Affairs is coming up with Piper Perabo as the lead. Also a Sarah Shahi-led show is in the offing, I think? Here's hoping!

I agree with you about Rizzoli and Isles. Look at my icon and see how much I want that show to hurry up and start. ;-D

Debate and disagree. It's all good. :) I'm glad that it works in its new configuration for someone. I'll agree with you that her family could be annoying -- there were times I wanted wring their necks -- but it was real. Or, it was to me.

USA and TNT are doing the yeoman's job of presenting strong women and I want to give them props for their efforts. For this particular show, though, they gutted the part that I thought made it unique. Now it stands out because of Mary but she's a woman in a sea of men.

I hope that we both fall in love with Rizzoli and Isles. I like the actresses so I figure I'm predisposed to enjoy it. *crosses fingers for good writers*

I can understand that. And YES, wringing the family's necks... I can understand that. But when frustrated by my family, I don't want to watch someone ELSE with a frustrating family. I want escape. :D

I will say the two characters I miss like hell are Bobby D and Eleanor. I loved Mary and Eleanor's love/hate relationship, and Bobby D was just badass (a black Jew riding a horse. What's not to love? ;-D).

I read the first Rizzoli novel (without realizing when I started that Isles wasn't even in it) and... I REALLY hope they change her character. A lot. I talked about it on my LJ when I read it, but Rizzoli was just a crappy character in the books. I already like her better in the preview I've seen (where she and Isles wash a dog in the morgue sink :D), so I'm hopeful they fixed the problems (or maybe the author fixed the problems in future books).

I didn't think I was going to like Eleanor because she seemed kind of stuck onto the cast but her thing with Mary was nicely done and I ended up loving her.

That's not a promising review for Rizzoli and Isles. I tend to NOT read the books before watching a show because they can never make the show as good as the book is in my head. But this maybe I should make an exception for so that I can appreciate how much better they made it!

I don't know what the deal was with the first Rizzoli novel. It seemed like the entire thing was framed to make you hate her as much as you did the villain. Rizzoli was a harridan, basically. The entire book is a hot mess. The focus is on a male investigator who is Just So Perfect he can't understand why people may not like him (as he "falls in love with" and beds a rape survivor who is the focus of their case) and it all brews together into a barely mediocre boilerplate crime thriller.

That said, the fact the show is called "Rizzoli & Isles" makes me hopeful that the focus will be solely where it belongs, on the two women. That and the fact I have no idea who else is in the show. I'm going to ignore the books entirely and take the series as its own entity. And hope for the best. ;-)

Wow. Somebody read that book and thought, "this could be a little more serialized." Wonders never cease. Thanks for the warning because there's a book I do not need to read.

I'm still psyched for the show but maybe a little more cautious as to what it'll be.
