TV Meme: Day 2
Day 01 - A show that should never have been canceled: Firefly
Day 02 - A show that you wish more people were watching:

I have no idea what the ratings are for various shows. I'm assuming that In Plain Sight must have had some issues because they've "re-vamped" the program and now it feels more pedestrian.

The focus on Mary's family life with her mother and sister is being downplayed/eliminated and I'm sorry for it. Yes, at times it was overdone but it was wonderful to have a show that revolved around three flawed but strong women. Sadly, the show's no longer centered around women talking to women about something other than men and recurring characters of color are being eliminated/sidelined. I still enjoy the show because Mary is a kick ass character whom I enjoy watching, the interaction with her partner Marshal Marshall Mann is always a winner, and I'm happy to see Paul Ben-Victor (Invisible Man). It just isn't the same.

And I have to agree with you, respectfully.

Were Brandi and Jinx sometimes super annoying? Yes, but you know what? EVERYthing about that family dynamic rang very true. I enjoyed the family moments even when I wanted to shake one or all three of those women.

Now they've stripped most of the personal stuff out and made it more like a regular procedural and, well, there are about four hundred billion of those already.

Plus, I love Mary. I love Marshall. But what I loved most about this show was MaryNMarshall, and I don't mean that shippy. I loved that it was about her and he was steadfastly the second banana, but present. At her back. Now we're lucky to get a few minutes of them together in an episode, or so it seems.

I still enjoy the show, but it's really cooled off for me this year because of the changes.

You stated what I was trying to, only you ACTUALLY said it. Soooo much better. I wanted to strangle Jinx and Brandi so many times but yes, the dynamic felt real even when there were television exaggeration issues.

made it more like a regular procedural and, well, there are about four hundred billion of those already.

THIS THIS THIS.

But what I loved most about this show was MaryNMarshall, and I don't mean that shippy.

THIS THIS THIS. I really liked that there was a lead female, a lead male, they had some sparkage, worked together oh-so-well, but they weren't being thrown together. Because in real life, that rarely happens. It's possible to work with hot, great men and NOT end up pining after them. No, really, T.V.

I loved that it was about her and he was steadfastly the second banana, but present. At her back.

THIS THIS THIS. YES! The dynamics were the inverse of how these shows are always done. And the writing was great so it offered more than "we're not your usual gender roles" show.

Thank you for stating it so much better than I did. You nailed on the head what I was trying to say.

I've been pretty disappointed this year.

The remodel of Mary's house is a perfect mirror for what they did with the show - it was all done off camera, and what we're left with is something that is sleek and beautiful, but kind of without soul. What good is beauty, really, if it's empty?

I figured I was in for a bummer when they glossed over Mary's shooting so quickly. I mean, it was frigging emotional (gah, Marshall weeping, FCOL) and what is the follow through? Focus more on the cases, the people we don't see from week to week. That makes no sense to me.

For as annoying as Brandi and Jinx could be sometimes, there was something there. A real, honest, horrible look at family. I always thought it was unfortunate their dysfunction revolved around the father/husband figure, but where it could have been all about him, the show made viewing how the Shannon women got the way they were almost always more about them.

I ramble. The show wasn't without problems in its original format, for sure - hello, race issues galore, which is part and parcel for everything USA produces. It's a great sea of white out there, but I thought they were always stepping the right way with gender.

Glossing over Mary's shooting is just so weird because it was such a pivotal moment for every single character. It's such a let-down.

always thought it was unfortunate their dysfunction revolved around the father/husband figure,

Even when it isn't about men, it's about men. *sigh* I like the way they handled it, too, though I wish they'd chosen a different crux to turn on. I don't hate men, they're nearly half of humanity after all and some of my best friends are men, but couldn't one action show not be about them?
