Is anyone interested in a LIMS contest for SG-1?
ETA: [livejournal.com profile] sg1_lims -- We now have enough votes to say that yes, we'll be having a LIMS!! If you wish to participate and haven't answered the poll, please fill out the poll so that I know to track you down and let you know when we're ready to open the community. We're collecting caps, organizing themes, and setting up the community right now!

~~**~~

Is there interest among icon makers for a LIMS contest for SG-1? [livejournal.com profile] lantis_lims is a well-run community and I enjoyed participating; I'd really like to see something like it for SG-1.

I used to think LIMS was ego-destroying with its eliminations and reasons for voting, but I found that knowing I'd get feedback spurred me to try new techniques and take risks. It was immensely helpful to me as an icon maker to receive comments, both positive *and* critical.

I've wished there were a similar community for SG-1 for a while. So, is there interest? I'd be willing to mod but I'd like to have either co-mods or, as the lantis_lims has, a bunch of volunteers to help. And, of course, I would like to have participants!

[Poll #1165719]

I'm sure there are lots of things I don't know about running a comm such as this; I've never done it. If you have any helpful suggestions or ideas, I'd love to hear them.

Also? Please pimp this poll. I would like to reach the widest range of SG-1 fans possible. Thank you. :)

I said yes to everything (I think). I don't really get a lot of feedback on my icons beyond "wow that's great", so I think this is a great idea. I voted for a round every other week cause it's so hard getting something together every week but I'll sure try no matter what you decide. I have a hard time keeping [livejournal.com profile] carter_stills on track but if you ever need help with anything just let me know :)

Exactly! And while it's quite gratifying to get those sorts of comments, it isn't the sort of thing that can help a person improve.

One thing we're committed to, whether challenges are weekly or every other week, is to have caps up and available several weeks in advance. Would it make it easier for you to participate weekly if you could, say, sit down and make icons for weeks 1, 2, and 3 all at once when you have time?

So far, every other week is winning in the vote. Two weeks is an eternity in LJ-time and I'm a bit concerned about losing momentum. I completely understand that every single week for an extended period of time can be overwhelming. I'm really torn on the timing issue. I'll go with whatever gets me the most participants. Or, you know, enough participants so that we can even have a LIMS.

It is nice to know people like them but I'm rather fond of comments that at least mention why a person likes them so I know I'm doing something right.

I think having caps in advance would be great. It'll give everyone a better chance of getting something made. I just entered this LIMS contest and even though I had a week to make something, it was still a last minute thing cause I couldn't come up with anything. I've never been one of those people that can come up with like 50 icons in a day, it usually takes me a week to make something I'd even own up to making lol.

If caps are available in advance, every week doesn't seem too hard.

Sign-ups started this morning: http://community.livejournal.com/sg1_lims/718.html

We're going to compromise on scheduling. Weekly works better on LJ in terms of keeping momentum but we all have time issues. We're going to post the caps at least 3 weeks in advance (my personal goal is to have all the caps for 13 challenges posted from the start but that relies on two other people, too) so that people who can work on icons only every other week can still play.

If that schedule won't work for you, I urge you to please let us know immediately. Our goal is to make it possible for the most people possible to participate. Nothing is set in stone just yet.

*goes to sign-up*

I think with caps available, it won't be so hard doing it every week. Good luck with the comm.
