Is anyone interested in a LIMS contest for SG-1?
ETA: [livejournal.com profile] sg1_lims -- We now have enough votes to say that yes, we'll be having a LIMS!! If you wish to participate and haven't answered the poll, please fill out the poll so that I know to track you down and let you know when we're ready to open the community. We're collecting caps, organizing themes, and setting up the community right now!

~~**~~

Is there interest among icon makers for a LIMS contest for SG-1? [livejournal.com profile] lantis_lims is a well-run community and I enjoyed participating; I'd really like to see something like it for SG-1.

I used to think LIMS was ego-destroying with its eliminations and reasons for voting, but I found that knowing I'd get feedback spurred me to try new techniques and take risks. It was immensely helpful to me as an icon maker to receive comments, both positive *and* critical.

I've wished there were a similar community for SG-1 for a while. So, is there interest? I'd be willing to mod but I'd like to have either co-mods or, as the lantis_lims has, a bunch of volunteers to help. And, of course, I would like to have participants!

[Poll #1165719]

I'm sure there are lots of things I don't know about running a comm such as this; I've never done it. If you have any helpful suggestions or ideas, I'd love to hear them.

Also? Please pimp this poll. I would like to reach the widest range of SG-1 fans possible. Thank you. :)

I can't say that I would definitely participate in an SG-1 LIMS, but I would certainly be very happy to know one is out there. I've been wanting to join a LIMS for a while now. I'm a little scared about it, partially because it's daunting to think about receiving perfectly honest criticism. Part of my hesitancy is the time factor involved. In short, I can't promise to participate, but I can promise to seriously consider participating. It's been quite some time since I've done and SG-1 icons.

One more comment. I, personally, would really prefer to see "old school" SG-1 more than "new school". I wasn't really that happy with the last two seasons of the show. If the caps would mostly center around the latter two seasons, I wouldn't be very interested in joining. Of course, I'm not saying that I would refuse to join if cap from S10 & S9 are provided, I just don't want the emphasis there. Does that make sense?

I won't deny that there is a certain intimidation factor in LIMS but one job of the moderators is to make certain that feedback is about the *technique* used to make the icon. So, comments such as, "image is a bit blurry and should be sharpened a bit" are acceptable but "that's ugly" are not. The point is to elicit constructive criticism, not the sort of mean-spirited stuff that gets hidden behind f-locks in rant communities.

I take your point. I, too, am most fond of Old School SG-1. I've thought a bit about the sorts of caps that we'd have to choose given the ten seasons and the shippers vs. slashers wars in the community. I want everyone who ever loved SG-1 to feel welcome and comfortable. I don't know if you've spent any time perusing the [livejournal.com profile] lantis_lims but I thought they did a nice job of choosing a variety of caps to represent all the characters for each and every challenge.

I had been thinking along the lines of each challenge always having at least one picture of each of the main team members (Jack, Daniel, Sam, Teal'c, Cameron, Vala). Challenges with shippy caps would also need to have slashy caps and femme slash-y caps and team-y caps, to my way of thinking. Of course, I'd want to spice it up with Janet and Hammond and Thor and the Nox and Apophis and Jonas and Adria occasionally, as well as having some caps that are scenic while some are character-focused.

Would that sort of content work for you? I'm truly interested to know. That was going to be my next round of questions if things looked good for going forward but I'm happy to talk about it now. :) I'm always open to suggestions and ideas for themes, selections, and what appeals to icon makers.

No, I haven't looked through [livejournal.com profile] lantis_lims much. I am thinking about joining up in the next round there, though.

Yeah, I would like a mix of stuff. I'd be happy so long as I wasn't routinely forced to make icons of people I don't like much. Or slashy icons. I would love to see some of the more minor characters brought in, too. Fraser, Hammond, and Jonas, of course, as well as Thor, Narim, and some of the other aliens out there. I'm not very good with scene-centric icons, but I'd be perfectly willing to give them a try. =D

I can safely guarantee that you won't find a better run LIMS anywhere. [livejournal.com profile] shadowserenity is a great, conscientious mod.

It's my sincere hope that any SG-1 fan, no matter her preferences, would feel welcome and comfortable participating. I don't have an agenda to push beyond enjoying SG-1 and having fun while making the best icons possible.
