Helpful Tip for Pre-Evacuation Prep
Have something that would be ruined by coming in contact with water but can't, for whatever reason, pack it out with you?

Remove the racks from your dishwasher, carefully place the item(s) in said dishwasher, and lock it. Don't forget to turn off the power to dishwasher (you were going to do that anyway before evacuating, right?) so that you don't accidentally inundate your stuff.

Voila! Semi-secure, waterproof storage.

Hi! I just found you through [livejournal.com profile] nicoleallee's LJ. And I just have to say... What a brilliant idea!

Thanks! I'll remember that when the *real* hurricane comes through! :)

Wish that I could claim credit - that's another bit of received wisdom from my mother. She called and told me, I posted, and then ran off to stuff my belongings into my dishwasher. I followed that up with stuffing into my washer and dryer.

I hope that's as close as I ever get to a category 4 storm. I've now been stuck twice in the face of an oncoming cat 4 and I really don't much like it. Of course, last time I was leaving about 12 hours before landfall. Certainly, I thought, 48 hours was more than enough time...

you know
Last year, during all the hurricanes, I wrapped my computer in plastic bags and put it in the oven, figuring, hey, even if a tree falls on the house, the oven will probably stop it crom crumpling my CPU...

This year, I guess i'll do it again.

Where's Wilma, now, again...?

Re: you know
That works, too. When it came time to leave the house, I decided against going around and unplugging everything. I went to the breaker box, instead, and turned off the power to everything but the a.c. and the fridge.

I hope you make it through safely, whether you choose to evacuate or to stay put. I'm hoping it'll make landfall as a category 2, but I suspect I'm living in a fantasy world. I'll be thinking good thought for you!
