Iconage Talk/Meme
I'm sure you've seen the "pick 3 of my icons..." meme making the round of your f-lists. I responded to two folks, [livejournal.com profile] ciaracat and [livejournal.com profile] beeej, so I have 6 icons and 3 interests to babble about!

[livejournal.com profile] ciaracat chose:

Interest 1: Dutch Still Lifes:
This is such a funny thing for me to like because still life paintings typically bore me. I don't generally know the iconography that are key to interpretation so...*yawn*...they always looked like studies to me. But then I worked at the Museum of Fine Arts and spent a lot of time looking at, nay staring at art. I was shocked to discover a whole school of still lifes that I completely adored.

I'm still astounded at what some of the Dutch masters could do with a tiny smear of white paint on a canvas! The exploration of light and translucence is just so cool! My favorite painter of this group is probably Heda, as he's the painter I'm most familiar with...*googles*...here's a fairly typical example.

Interest #2: Sony DSC-F828: This is my baby. *grin* It's the big 'ole camera that I haul with me on vacations. It's the first time I've owned a camera that isn't the cheapest point & shoot model I could find. It was a present to myself and I'm still in love with it. :) Yes, the best photographers can still make art even if all they have is a cheap point & shoot -- but I'm not a "best photographer" and I've found that I do get better pics now that I have a better camera.

Interest #3: vba: Visual Basic. :) When I took my current job, I was supposed to be working with the corporate Quality System and ensuring compliance, yadda. In truth, I had little to do and was b-o-r-e-d. I could tell that we were doing things the hard way (paper based) and I knew that a database was where to start. So, I sat down and taught myself VBA by dissecting a couple of Access databases. Then I started reading about database design theory, hacked a couple of company's old databases, began designing Office-based systems to help our various offices, and well, now I've designed the system that keeps North America compliant with our German masters and keeps them off our backs. I have VBA to thank for my current position where I made up my own job. :)

[livejournal.com profile] ciaracat chose icons from 3 of my all-time favorite icon-makers. :)

Hee! It's Dr. Daniel Jackson. He's so sexy when he's blindfolded and tied up. ;-) I love the coloring and the way his muscles are wonderfully highlighted. I like the random striping effect because it's subtle enough to add interest without distracting from the über-sexy Daniel. Actually, this icon is one of the first ones I adopted and it has lasted because it's more than just Bondage!Daniel. It's the sort of icon I wish I had the talent to make. In particular, I love the use of text. It's brilliant and it's not anything I would ever come up with on my own.

by [livejournal.com profile] paddies
Gale Harold! Another beautiful, beautiful man. *sigh* This is from his stint on Deadwood but I love the hat tipping. Very appropriate seeing as I'm Texan, obviously, but it has such a multitude of meanings -- kind of like "aloha." ;-) It can be a "thank you," "howdy," or "seeya." And look at that smile! He's sooooooo dreamy. I absolutely adore this icon.

by [livejournal.com profile] mata090680
OK, it's hard to see just how hot Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki are in this icon but the icon makes me laugh every time I look at it and *I* know how hot they are. ;-) I am too much of a wimp to watch Supernatural but this is funny without even having seen most of the show. "Eep!" is actually something I say and write so this is a good fit for me in that way, too. :)

Another memorable and wonderful Daniel icon! Like "eep!", it makes me laugh. I love the bright colors, the text, the animation is brilliant. I don't know how long she worked to edit the clip so that he's doing that, but I'm very appreciative. :) Plus, you know, Daniel in clothes that fit. Mmmmmmmm. Yummy, yummy man.

Slashy goodness with my favorite slash pairing, J/D. The manip to get their faces together like that is well-done. I'm not normally a fan of manips but this one is extremely good and the pics were well-chosen. It has the advantage of being very obviously slashy without crossing the line to being NSFW. I have several slashy icons that are NSFW and I try not to use those on regular posts, saving them for use on comments out of respect for those who might be surfing their f-list while at work.

by [livejournal.com profile] paddies
At the time [livejournal.com profile] paddies published this icon, I had been looking for a long time for a WTF? icon. I wanted one but I was being very choosy. I just love the way all the characters are staring out of the icon -- and the expression on Six's face is particularly amusing and I love the way Gaius is barely peeking on the right side. It isn't just one character making with the "WTF?" it's a cast of characters, so it feels like an even bigger WTF.

This icon is more than just a good match between text and picture, though. I love the use of negative space and the choice of a huge, eroded font.

Probably everyone who wants to participate already has participated, but if you'd like to play along, too, please comment here and let me know if you want to do 3 Icons or 3 Interests/Icons. If you say you want to play, I'll go through your icons, and interests if applicable, and choose three. :D

What do I do exactly? :)

You tell me if you want me to choose:

-- 3 of your icons, OR
-- 3 of your icons and 3 of your interests

that I want to know more about. :) Once you've done that, I'll pick and you can answer or not, in your own LJ or here, as you so desire.
[identity profile] selmak.livejournal.com on April 26th, 2007 12:52 am (UTC)
uhm...ok three icons. and if you can find 3 of my interests, I'll talk about them. Feel free to select only 1 of them, as I don't have all my interests up.

do I do the same for you? :)

I see you've anticipated me! ;-)

Calvin & Hobbes is tied with Farside for my all-time favorite comic. I looked for C&H icons for a long time but it's the very rare, talented icon-maker who can capture C&H within the 40 KB limit of an icon. There aren't a lot of C&H icons and darn few of those are really *good.* This is one of those -- and it still makes me smile every time I see it. :)

by [livejournal.com profile] cala_jane
Man, I wish she'd make more SG-1 icons, although I suppose it's just as well she doesn't because I probably never would have taken up icon-making and then what would I do in my spare time? Another icon that made me smile when I first saw it. It's just kind of wacky and lovely nod to one of my all-time favorite episodes. I saw SG-1 unspoiled up through S7 and I was so shocked that the Asgard were the Roswell Grays! ;) Just...perfection.

by me!
John Barrowman is another of those really pretty men but he comes with a huge advantage: he's a shameless showman who enjoys playing the game. He'll pose for pictures, send autographed pics if you ask, he works constantly, he has this amazing charisma, he has a powerful singing voice, he speaks his mind without fear, he's risque, he's totally cool about stripping down in front of the camera, he got married in a kilt, he's drop-dead classic gorgeous...and he likes dogs.

So, this icon is one I made as part of a challenge. The pic was kind of formally staged so there wasn't a lot to do color/light wise that I thought was interesting. I was playing with background to spice it up. I have no idea why it popped into my head to try animating the background because I generally suck at animation and thus avoid it. :)

I think it worked on this icon, even though it's a bit intense, and it fits because John Barrowman IS mesmerizing.

The meme is only supposed to be one way but you really can't shut me up when I get to talking about "me Me ME!" so feel free to nominate some more if there's something on my interests/in my icons that interests you but I haven't yet addressed. :)

Hee hee. I haven't done this because my icons are pretty dull compared to most, and I've got very few interests.

;)

I like reading about eveyrone else though!
Mish: Ackles -- Nekkid Dean in Bed[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com on April 26th, 2007 12:42 am (UTC)
I would disagree! I'm especially fond of your fractals. They're very...personal? Nobody else on my f-list has them. :)

I've been enjoying reading about others' reasons for having the icons they chose and what it means to them -- and I couldn't pass up an opportunity (or two!) to babble about icons while I'm in my current icon fu slump.

Fractals bemuse and fascinate me.

I love the colors of the ones you chose. They're pretty, they're cool, and they're space-y. :)

Thanks! And thanks for inspiring me to update my icons and interests. ;)

Oooooo...that's a new one, isn't it? I don't think I've ever seen a fractal that has such a standard "flower shape" so prominently featured. Very cool!

You're always way too nice with me...*adores*

Nope. Not possible. :)

Hope that life is looking up and that we'll be popping that "Fabulous New Job" cork soon. *HUGS*

WOW. That sample of a Dutch still life is stunning!!

I'll play again if there's anything on mine you want to know about! 3 Interests/Icons or whatever you like. :)

Have you watched a lot of their interviews for the show? Especially those when they're together? They are *so* cute together. hehe

NSFW

What is this? *g*

I probably shouldn't, but what the heck. hehe This one is fun. I'll do icons & interests if you want. :-)

The thing I like best about this meme is what I've been learning about everyone else. Those longer memes with a million questions tend to get repetitive because everyone's answering the exact same questions. With this one, we're able to find out a little about things that people don't necessarily write about in their journals regularly or about other interests that are different from the ones we share. :-)
Mish[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com on April 27th, 2007 03:14 am (UTC)
Have you watched a lot of their interviews for the show?

No, I haven't. I really should do that because that wouldn't be too creepy for me.

What is this? *g*

Luckily for me, I don't have this problem at my office because I would be the person doing the reviewing of downloaded images but for many it's, "Not Safe For Work."

I love this meme! I'm learning little factoids about friends -- I have a very cool f-list! -- and I love the stories people tell about the pics they choose to represent themselves. Also, it's way cool to have a reason to poke through someone's interests, really reading them rather than scanning the bolded items, and then go snooping through their icons.
