Hard drive dead :(
This month hasn't started well; first food poisoning and now it looks as if my external hard drive is dead. :( Gone with it is all my "fun" stuff: screen caps, Photoshop *.psd files, textures & brushes & a thousand downloads for Photoshop, videos...100 GB of cool stuff. *sigh*
I'll be buying a new one -- and it's not as if I lost valuable work stuff -- but it's my "Having Fun" drive. Damn. March has not been kind to me thus far. Sure hope it's done messing with me.

{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{ hugs you }}}}}}}}}}}}}} Food poisoning. I know that feeling. :(

You know what's mildly amusing? This drive was also my backup drive. It was partitioned so that part of it was backup for my critical data and then a section was just for playing around and having fun. I'm extremely lucky, I know, that when it died it didn't take the only copy of my financial data or anything else critical to continuing real life as I know it. But reassembling the thousands of cool textures for making icons? And my literally tens of thousands of screen caps? Sadly, that just isn't going to happen.

And yeah, it'd be lovely to eat. I ate something yesterday and today, I feel like complete... well, dead would probably feel better. *sighs* At least I can drink my mocha latte without any trouble, but that's about as far as I'm going to get, I think. About the only thing that sounds good to me is fried rice. Not sure if that's good or bad. ;)

I don't like to eat at salad bars for that reason, though. Once veggies are chopped, they don't really stay fresh for that long, and I always wonder how long stuff has been sitting out or how other patrons have handled it. *g* I just don't trust people, I guess. hehe
I hope you can get over your aversion, though. It took me 20 years to get over the one I had with peas for a similar reason. *g* Even now...I could never eat a bowl of peas, but I don't mind them in soup or a few mixed in with something. :-)

Freezer trick?
(Anonymous) 2007-03-06 03:37 pm (UTC)(link)But apparently, some folks have gotten lucky with putting the hard drive in a freezer and transferring the data off before it comes back to room temperature. Some even leave it in the freezer with the cables coming out during the transfer. Yeah, it's a "heard on the internet" tip, but it's cheaper than paying a data recovery service and if your drive is truly dead you have nothing to lose.
Sorry about the food poisoning too. This just isn't your month.

Re: Freezer trick?
Freezing is worth a try because I'd be grateful to not have to start over from scratch. I have absolutely nothing to lose and I'd like to keep my money. I actually want to get a new CPU soon-ish and I'd rather spend computer bucks on that instead.
Today is a new day and a very cautious approach to food has me feeling a million times better. :) Hope you're staying warm. It looks to be wickedly cold and miserable up your way today. Hugs to you and to M!

Buy a new enclosure and break the hard drive out of the old one and put it in and you may get lucky.

Thanks for the advice. :) I'll definitely be giving that a try tonight.

Also, if it doesn't work you might give it to me to see if I can convince it to cooperate.
