Hard drive dead :(

This month hasn't started well; first food poisoning and now it looks as if my external hard drive is dead. :( Gone with it is all my "fun" stuff: screen caps, Photoshop *.psd files, textures & brushes & a thousand downloads for Photoshop, videos...100 GB of cool stuff. *sigh*

I'll be buying a new one -- and it's not as if I lost valuable work stuff -- but it's my "Having Fun" drive. Damn. March has not been kind to me thus far. Sure hope it's done messing with me.

Now that sucks! Here's hoping the rest of your month goes much better! *huggles*

Thanks. :) It's frustrating because I had lots of videos on there and getting a bunch of those Photoshop resources again just isn't going to happen. And it's a real pain in the ass. Happily, it didn't have my financial data or something critical that I need.

[identity profile] riverfox.livejournal.com 2007-03-06 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
*headdesk* That's the problem with having a storage and backup drive. When it fails, you're screwed. :( I worry about mine all the time. I backup my important files there and keep all my videos/films there. If it were to fail, I'd then start worrying about my other drives, since they're currently less stable than the external. Eeep?

{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{ hugs you }}}}}}}}}}}}}} Food poisoning. I know that feeling. :(

The food poisoning is a real downer. *hugs back* I'm not as young as I used to be (who is?) but I sure don't bounce back like I used to and that is rather a downer. I'd really like to be able to eat again.

You know what's mildly amusing? This drive was also my backup drive. It was partitioned so that part of it was backup for my critical data and then a section was just for playing around and having fun. I'm extremely lucky, I know, that when it died it didn't take the only copy of my financial data or anything else critical to continuing real life as I know it. But reassembling the thousands of cool textures for making icons? And my literally tens of thousands of screen caps? Sadly, that just isn't going to happen.

[identity profile] riverfox.livejournal.com 2007-03-06 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Damn :( Can you afford to take it to a tech for data recovery?

And yeah, it'd be lovely to eat. I ate something yesterday and today, I feel like complete... well, dead would probably feel better. *sighs* At least I can drink my mocha latte without any trouble, but that's about as far as I'm going to get, I think. About the only thing that sounds good to me is fried rice. Not sure if that's good or bad. ;)

I was thinking of you as I drove home today. Tomorrow is the first full day Jerry will be open since your show went up. I can hardly wait to hear if anything sells right away. FWIW, Jerry was talking about possibly buying something for himself (before y'all showed up) because he hasn't bought any art lately and he liked what he saw on the website.

On the up side? I replaced the dead drive tonight. For $60 less than the dead drive cost me, I now have an additional 200GB over what I had before. It isn't all bad! ;-)

Food poisoning isn't something I normally worry about because I don't eat the main vectors of infection. I can't honestly say what poisoned me but it happened not long after I ate my favorite salad from a local eatery of good repute so I've associated the two. Now broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini, carrots, sprouts, sesame seeds...these turn my stomach a little. I'm can't wait for the association to fade because this has been my staple lunch for several years and I don't want to change.

I'm concerned because it seems like food poisoning is everywhere lately--on fresh veggies (which I know can always happen, but it's not something one hears about much) and even in peanut butter. (I wouldn't eat that kind of peanut butter anyway, but I'm still very curious about how it got in the peanut butter in the first place.)

I don't like to eat at salad bars for that reason, though. Once veggies are chopped, they don't really stay fresh for that long, and I always wonder how long stuff has been sitting out or how other patrons have handled it. *g* I just don't trust people, I guess. hehe

I hope you can get over your aversion, though. It took me 20 years to get over the one I had with peas for a similar reason. *g* Even now...I could never eat a bowl of peas, but I don't mind them in soup or a few mixed in with something. :-)

Freezer trick?

(Anonymous) 2007-03-06 03:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been in a similar situation. I was able to get mine fired up long enough to offload the data and reformat the drive; since then, the drive hasn't acted up. I think it was probably due to a system hang that wouldn't allow me to stop the drive before powering it down.

But apparently, some folks have gotten lucky with putting the hard drive in a freezer and transferring the data off before it comes back to room temperature. Some even leave it in the freezer with the cables coming out during the transfer. Yeah, it's a "heard on the internet" tip, but it's cheaper than paying a data recovery service and if your drive is truly dead you have nothing to lose.

Sorry about the food poisoning too. This just isn't your month.

Hey, you! Very, very, very good to hear from you. Put your feet up; stay awhile. :) This drive gave me one warning that it was failing but since everything came up fine after a reboot I didn't recognize it for what it was. Now it powers up but doesn't spin and the CPU doesn't "see" it.

Freezing is worth a try because I'd be grateful to not have to start over from scratch. I have absolutely nothing to lose and I'd like to keep my money. I actually want to get a new CPU soon-ish and I'd rather spend computer bucks on that instead.

Today is a new day and a very cautious approach to food has me feeling a million times better. :) Hope you're staying warm. It looks to be wickedly cold and miserable up your way today. Hugs to you and to M!

I know! The worst part is losing all of my *.psd files. I'm heartbroken over that. I don't access them a lot but every once in a while, when I want to know, "how did I do that?" it has proven very helpful. And I've lost a lot of icons I never uploaded. Most were crap (hence, "never uploaded,") but I liked having them. Woe. :(

*hugs*

With external drives I have found, on more than just a few occasions, that it's the enclosure that's gone bad. The drive itself is intact.

Buy a new enclosure and break the hard drive out of the old one and put it in and you may get lucky.

[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com 2007-03-06 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh? Now THAT is some very good news. I've never done that before but between me and the internet I think I can manage it. I'd be very very very happy if that would work. I've thought all along, based on sounds it made and now no longer does, that it was a physical failure rather than a drive failure but I didn't know I could just swap out the disk to a new enclosure.

Thanks for the advice. :) I'll definitely be giving that a try tonight.

[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Huh...looks like all I'm going to do is crack a couple of cases, unplug the hard drive from the old one, and plug it in to the new one. That seems...too easy. I must be missing something. Guess I'll know soon.

[identity profile] mrkamikaze.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
The new one won't have to be "cracked." They sell those as "do it yourself" kits. $20 - $30 without a hard drive. If it doesn't work you can return it or buy a drive to install so you have a new backup.

Also, if it doesn't work you might give it to me to see if I can convince it to cooperate.
