I meme, therefore I am
Welcome to the eleven new people insane enough to add me to their f-lists in the past month. A couple are writers adding me to filters but I don't know what excuse the rest of you have. *grins*

~~00~~

Took my younger dog, Brinkley, to the vet today for his semi-annual eye exam. We have drops for his eyes and this joyful time where I muzzle him and carry him across town to a hole in the wall where the supremo opthamalogist for dogs insists on working. Brinkley's eyes are good (well, good considering he really needs surgery but isn't a candidate) but he seems to have a low grade ear infection. Huh.

In response to the latest suspected pseuicide, there's a meme going around of "who on my f-list could verify that I'm real." So...

[livejournal.com profile] abydosdork, [livejournal.com profile] bassfingers, [livejournal.com profile] bleekabyebye, [livejournal.com profile] comtraya, [livejournal.com profile] drelmo, [livejournal.com profile] fizzwilliam, [livejournal.com profile] greeneyes_rpi, [livejournal.com profile] hwrnmnbsol, [livejournal.com profile] immlass, [livejournal.com profile] jalabert, [livejournal.com profile] janiekins, [livejournal.com profile] katiedammit, [livejournal.com profile] la_directora, [livejournal.com profile] majorsamfan, [livejournal.com profile] mcroft, [livejournal.com profile] moonshayde, [livejournal.com profile] mrkamikaze, [livejournal.com profile] msjudi, [livejournal.com profile] nicoleallee, [livejournal.com profile] opinionatedmuse, [livejournal.com profile] rickj, [livejournal.com profile] roundrockronin, [livejournal.com profile] selmak, [livejournal.com profile] stacy_l, [livejournal.com profile] superl99, [livejournal.com profile] triciabyrne1978, [livejournal.com profile] tubin,[livejournal.com profile] vibrant_daphne, [livejournal.com profile] zencohen

Soon to add [livejournal.com profile] juliabk to the list people I've met. Weirdest case? The person I don't *think* I've met but really, really should have is [livejournal.com profile] ciaracat. We have the same real life friends, go to the same real life functions, we're even both archaeologists! (Well, used to be.) I expect, when formally introduced, that I'll be like, "Oh! You're that person!" because my memory for names is for shit.

Clearly, I know too many people for real and will have to devise an alternate LJ identity if I ever decide to fake a miscarriage, off myself digitally, or milk a hospital stay for loot. :|

~~00~~

Last year's "post the first sentence from each of the first posts of each month" meme is making the circuit again. I can participate this time because I've had an LJ for the entire year.

Jan - "Quick note to say I'm playing with layouts and colors for the LJ now that I've gotten a paid account."
Feb - "I hate days when it seems like the day will just. never. end."
Mar - "I'll post some long comment later."
Apr - "Now that I again feel human, I've been diving back into the depths of my f-list after losing the past couple of weeks to poisoning by fish."
May - "HAPPY BIRTHDAY, [livejournal.com profile] paddies!"
Jun - "Awww...some kind soul anonymously sent me an LJ yellow flower in sympathy."
Jul - "From the [livejournal.com profile] fanthropology community, a survey about how and why people do - or don't - use icons."
Aug - "Last Sunday, I took the train downtown to see the better half's band play a showcase of talent nominated for 'The Best of Houston' Music Awards."
Sept - "I've been fatigued for a while now."
Oct - "For those outside the U.S.: Foley, a 50-something Republican member of the US Congress, is alleged to have sent admits sending e-mails and explicit IMs to a 16 y.o. kid who worked in the Capitol."
Nov - "I'm home."
Dec - "Welcome to the eleven new people insane enough to add me to their f-lists in the past month."

Everybody wants to know my music tastes -- or else I'm the last one to be tagged. I was tagged first by [livejournal.com profile] mlspikie (Thanks forreminding me. Sorry to have spaced it) and then again by [livejournal.com profile] riverfox. Seven songs I'm listening to and really enjoying, no matter how embarrassing. To which I wail, "Only 7? How do I choose?" I've always been obstinate and I don't imagine anyone will care so I'm going to list the 7 albums I'm enjoying. Nothing new and exciting here.

RULES: List seven songs you are into right now. No matter what the genre, whether they have words, or even if they're not any good, but they must be songs you're really enjoying now. Post these instructions in your live journal along with your seven songs. Then tag seven other people to see what they're listening to.

1. Compilation -- Queer as Folk Season 1 CD
2. Austin Lounge Lizards -- Highway Cafe of the Damned
3. ZZ Top -- ZZ Top's Greatest Hits (or whatever it's called)
4. Madonna -- Dick Tracy Soundtrack
5. Elton John -- Greatest Hits (the one where he's wearing the white suit and sitting at the piano)
6. Beatles -- Rubber Soul
7. Beatles -- Help!
8. Flying Fish Sailors -- Give Me Coffee

Yeah, I snuck an extra one in but that last one is a CD by Joe's band. I love their music and that's my all-time favorite album of theirs. Of course, it's the one not available on Amazon. Pfft. Also, I've been on a nostalgia kick of late and a bunch of pop-y, New Wave-y, 80-era tunes and some 70s disco have seen some currency on my iPod. Alas, Marvin is at the house so I can't get it to remind me which are my most played, but Blondie, Tears for Fears, Billy Squier, and A-ha feature strongly as do the odd Abba, Village People, and Donna Summer disco hits.

I'm supposed to tag 7 people. I don't normally tag folks because hey, I'm sooo not into the peer-pressure thing. However, I have several people on my f-list who have deep and abiding passion for music and I figure they wouldn't mind an excuse to talk music. Feel free to just ignore this if you'd rather not participate. I tag:

[livejournal.com profile] mcroft, [livejournal.com profile] immlass, [livejournal.com profile] bassfingers, [livejournal.com profile] mrkamikaze, [livejournal.com profile] greeneyes_rpi, [livejournal.com profile] la_directora, [livejournal.com profile] tubin

Ooooo...NICE icon!

I have a built-in advantage because quite a few of the people I've met are people I went to college with. I'm not certain why I decided to mix fannish life and real life...

Welcome back, hon. Hope everything's going as well as can be expected for you.
[identity profile] moondropz.livejournal.com on December 6th, 2006 01:10 am (UTC)
Thanks! I am fond of this icon-I just added it a few days ago. And I seem to be using it quite a bit-lol.
Ahhh-I see! I have no friends-college or otherwise who actually do the lj thing. Probably a good thing because then they could tell everyone who isn't-alot of things about that are embarassing! Ha! But I had the pleasure of meeting the one lady about a month and a half ago-and we really had a nice time. Way too short-but fun ;-)
I am back to work today-so I am doing better. I took yesterday off to just *Be*. That was a good plan. We came back Sunday and took Monday to relax. Thanks for thinking of me ;-)
*Hugs*!!!

I never intended to mix my real life and my fandom life but somehow it worked out that way. *shrug* Since my LJ is mostly my fandom adventures, I think my real life friends have tuned me out. :)

Taking the extra day was a smart move. I've learned the hard way to do exactly that.

[identity profile] moondropz.livejournal.com on December 6th, 2006 02:55 am (UTC)
I think it would be cool to have some friends from rl in this-for me. But it's a moot point so-lol-oh well. I will just have to learnt o deal I guess! LOLOLOL!!!
Oh yes, this is the first time we ever did that-take the day and relax. I should have done this sooner-for the few other funerals I've been to. So much easier. We do this for vacations as well-no idea why we never thought of this! *Headdesk* ;-)
Mish: Alec -- Horror[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com on December 6th, 2006 03:25 am (UTC)
My love of slash is not something I'm ashamed of but it wasn't something I planned to share about myself with my college buddies, either. In some ways, I'm sorry I haven't divided the two interests. I feel like I'm spamming my college friends with icons and squee and my fandom friends with stuff like whining about work stress.

I do that with vacations, too. I guess with funerals since I don't "plan" them I'm always rushing back to work since it was a last minute thing. That isn't really healthy. :(
[identity profile] moondropz.livejournal.com on December 6th, 2006 03:50 am (UTC)
I can how that would be frustrating for you! I have no way to compare that as I said-they don't have lj's. I have tried to get a few interested to no avail. I am not into slash alot-but if it's well written I enjoy it as much as the next ;-) I guess to me it doesn't make a difference because I've always gone by the creedo-I like myself-take me as I am. LOL! If not? Well, there's the door! My friends are all pretty cool with my likes and dislikes-so that's all I can ask really ;-) And if the story is well written-why not enjoy it? Some of the het stories are pretty craptastic too! And as far as your posting-it's how you feel at the time right? I know some who have 2 ljs for this-and if it works for them so be it. I just figure I have enough trouble keeping the first one up-lmao. I enjoy your posts-so no worries here!
And yeah. I think that has a lot to do with it. Funerals are pretty unplanned-fortunately my job is flexible enough that if I need the extra day they can give it to me. And it really pays to take the day! As you said-it's more healthy this way around.
*Hugs*!!!!

In the end I figure that LJ gives us filters for a reason. They can always shunt me off to a "skim" filter or something. It's not that I hide who I am - frankly, that takes waaaaay too much energy - but that I compartmentalize and discuss topics where we have overlapping interests. I don't expect my QaF friends to be interested in Stargate or Dark Angel, for instance. It's nice when it happens but not expected.

I got into slash after bemoaning the lack of quality fic in a fandom that's utterly het. At one point in time several years ago, it seemed like the fandom had been taken over by 14 year old girls and some rather prudish sorts. Not that there's anything wrong with 14 yr old girls *grins* but it's not where I am mentally and not what I wanted to read. Anyhow, [livejournal.com profile] jalabert suggested I try slash because the community tended to be older and the writing tended to be better. She linked me to a very well written story and the rest is history. I blame it all on her!

My work is extremely lenient about such things. I ended up taking 2 weeks off as I went to visit my dad while he was dying and nobody said anything other than how sorry they were for me. I suppose it's for that reason that I feel an internal pressure not to "push" it. As if I accomplish anything on that first day back anyway. *rolls eyes at self*
[identity profile] moondropz.livejournal.com on December 7th, 2006 01:41 am (UTC)
This is very true! I hadn't thought of that until you mentioned it-lol. But very easy to take care of at any rate. I tend to chat about whatever I'm feeling at the time. Mostly my frustrations from the day or night before. Or if I have any good news to pass on. I have a few fandoms/friends, so they tend to get it all in one go. No big deal-or they do what you mentioned up thread, and don't say anything. Their choice I guess. But most everyone seems fine with it.
I have a friend who writes slash-and that's how I got into reading some of it. She writes it for Prison Break-and from there I wandered into the slash for Supernatural. I have read some pretty crappy het fic-from several fandoms-so it goes both ways. But well written is well written-and I can enjoy the story no matter what. I know some have trouble with this-getting past the slash aspect of it, but like I said-well written makes a huge difference! So I can read both. I guess I can blame it on my friend for getting me started too-lmao!
Oh how horrible. I know I had to go a month after losing my mom. I spiraled into a major depression there for awhile. But they were really good to me at work-like you. It takes some people more time to adjust and grieve than others. And I was blessed they understood this. I am sorry to hear about your dad-no matter how long ago it happend.
*Hugs*!!!

I think my real life friends have tuned me out.

Is that what you think?

I've met about 71 of my friendslist face to face.
Mish[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com on December 6th, 2006 02:46 pm (UTC)
I would have been more accurate to write, "I hope my real life friends have tuned me out when I go off on yet another fandom spree." I chat with [livejournal.com profile] jalabert and [livejournal.com profile] opinionatedmuse damned near every day and I tune them out when they're talking knitting and [livejournal.com profile] opinionatedmuse tunes us out when we're talking slash or Stargate. [livejournal.com profile] jalabert tunes us out when we talk geek. I hope for your mental health that you aren't really reading all about how sexy Jensen or Gale or Michael is or how OTP Jack and Daniel are because I don't really see that as likely to be of great interest to you. But, I could be wrong, in which case I hope you aren't tuning it out.

71? I barely have 71 people on my f-list. And do you know how wonderful it is that you said, "about 71?"
[identity profile] mcroft.livejournal.com on December 6th, 2006 04:38 pm (UTC)
Turns out it's 72 of 91. I forgot one RL friend's LJ name.

You and I have 10 mutual friends, all of whom we both know in person.

I suspect you know another 15 of my friends who I know in person from the Houston/Rice/Mattnet crowd, not couting [livejournal.com profile] ciaracat

The other 50 are mostly gaming buddies. 17 of them play/played in the online RPG [livejournal.com profile] immlass and I have been running for the last 5 years.
