I don't do fanfic, I just do PBeM. ;-)

All ratings? The things we never knew about our friends.
Mish[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com on November 22nd, 2005 04:22 am (UTC)
I plead the 5th. ;-) I note, though, that the question is, "read/write."
Ginger[personal profile] gentlyepigrams on November 22nd, 2005 04:20 pm (UTC)
I see those Jack/Daniel slash comms on my "friend of friend" list. I know you *read* it! It's the *writing* we're all curious about.
Mish[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com on November 22nd, 2005 04:42 pm (UTC)
"Friend of friend" list? Where is that? I think that would be fascinating.

Actually, I read very little Stargate on LJ. I belong to a couple of lists but the writers I prefer tend to post to Yahoo groups or on their own websites. I just discovered QaF fanfic and that seems to take place on LJ so that's mostly what I read; I'm still catching up with 5 years of stories.

Friend of friend is a paid user feature.

I don't have the patience to be a fanfic reader. My fandom interests are too damn broad and my taste in fic is too damn narrow.
Mish[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com on November 22nd, 2005 05:29 pm (UTC)
Damn! Oh well.

There's certainly a LOT of dreck to sort through. Fan fic draws from the general populace and there are those who excel and those who just show up. Slash often has a more mature set of readers/writers so the signal to noise is a bit higher. As for reading tastes, mine vary widely depending on my mood. *shrug*
Ginger[personal profile] gentlyepigrams on November 22nd, 2005 05:38 pm (UTC)
You can always wander through the friends pages of your own friends. You just can't get it compiled the way a paid user can.

Even the slash has some excruciatingly bad stuff. Someone else on my flist linked to an adult fanfic site and I wandered through it on a lark. A lot of it was just plain dreck. I'd be embarrassed to confess what's currently hitting my sweet spot, but it wasn't what I read there.
Mish[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com on November 22nd, 2005 10:15 pm (UTC)
You overestimate my industriousness. ;-) Perusing? Hell yeah! Clicking around and, yanno, insurring the great strain of clicking on the mouse? Never!

Slash has a load of crap (*cough* male pregnancy *cough*). It's less of a load than in hetero fanfic...there be (fewer) wastes of oxygen idiots there.

I sure hope I'm not the one who sent you to a home of excretia...I don't think I've rec'ed any sites in general.
Mish[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com on November 23rd, 2005 12:21 am (UTC)
insurring...incurring -- why, oh why isn't there an edit button? *sigh*

btw, I certainly understand embarrassment about admitting one's sweet spots in an excruciatingly public forum.

I should email you the link to the fic I read that I really liked.
Mish[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com on November 23rd, 2005 01:26 am (UTC)
Please do! You have me e-mail addy, no? I can e-mail you if you don't.
Ginger[personal profile] gentlyepigrams on November 23rd, 2005 01:42 am (UTC)
Sent.
Mish[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com on November 23rd, 2005 02:40 pm (UTC)
TY. The link is in my home e-mail so I won't be surfing it today. Maybe over the holidays... :)
Ginger[personal profile] gentlyepigrams on November 23rd, 2005 01:01 am (UTC)
You were not the person who sent me to the bad place. It was mixed het and slash, but the problems were bad on both sides. Please write canon characters sort of in-canon, thank you. Also, betas, please feel free to tell writers their writing is crap when it is.

Male pregnancy? Ew.
Mish[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com on November 23rd, 2005 01:28 am (UTC)
*whew* There are repositiroies that seem to attract the bad. Thus the question above about fanfiction.net. I agree about within characters.

Every time I'm subjected to mpreg, I am reminded of Monty Python. "Where would you gestate it? In a box?" I love John Cleese.
superbadgirl: sagoonie[personal profile] superbadgirl on November 23rd, 2005 03:20 am (UTC)
Mpreg is abhorrent. So is kidfic. If I were to word associate, I'd be torn between "wrong" and "bad." ;)
Mish[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com on November 23rd, 2005 02:39 pm (UTC)
Hey! LJ didn't tell me by e-mail that you'd commented.

Kidfic reminds me of the Looney Tunes experiment with Bugs and Co. (late 80s/early 90s?) as young'uns so I admit any time I see that category, I snicker. And move right on.

Speaking of excruciatingly public fora...Hey to you, Jay! Stupid LJ did not send me an e-mail announcing your comment. Hope they get that straightened out soon.

I've added the two feeds. A girl can never have enough Fish. I meant to leave a message about those great photos you have on the Fish's site from Sunday. Most excellent.

I'm screeing this comment since it has my real-life name in it. I can't think that it matters in the wider world, but just in case I ever want to run for office as a moral crusading Repug, it's cheaper to pay off only a couple of people.

The links provided by my good friend, for others who have yet to discover the bliss of being a fan of the Flying Fish Sailors and their guitarist, are [livejournal.com profile] mrkamikaze and [livejournal.com profile] baldheretic.
