Survived Ike but one of millions without power
Sorry to have been out of contact for so long. We have no power at the house. I'm at the office for the moment because I need to recharge our cell phones and other equipment. We lost two trees: the Arizona ash that I knew would fail and the fig tree that I adored. We lost a significant number of shingles on the roof. We were extremely fortunate. It's a lovely thing that the Better Half and I each have a long history of camping because we already had most of what we need to survive without power. It's annoying to stand in line for ice every single day but we're all alive, in good health if you don't count mosquito bites in the dozens, and have much to be thankful for.

I'm *especially* grateful for an early taste of fall. So often it's even hotter after one one of these storms so I'm thrilled to have what around here passes for cool weather. The lows are in the low 60s and the highs are in the low 80s. As I'm without air conditioning at home, I'm ecstatic for the nice weather.

I don't know how often I'll be at the office. The Better Half's mother has a house on one of the bayous near Galveston Bay. We're needed down there to help salvage what we can as the mold is taking over her house.

[livejournal.com profile] beeej? If you're reading this, I don't know how much I'll be able to do for the final challenge in [livejournal.com profile] sg1_lims. :( I'm really sorry about this but I want to warn you that I have no good idea when I'm getting power restored. My neighborhood suffered a heart-breaking number of downed trees. On my block alone, there are two huge, uprooted trees being held up by the power lines. This is not unusual within our neighborhood. Maybe it'll go really quick once power crews get to our neighborhood but thus far we haven't seen anyone. Center Point Energy estimates that our power will be restored, "after Monday, September 22." (*.pdf map is here in case anyone's interested but hasn't yet found it.)

I was just wondering how your evacuation had gone! I'm assuming the margaritas and Farscape went over well at least?
Mish[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com on September 17th, 2008 08:55 pm (UTC)
The margaritas went well. I'm a light-weight so I drank a small one and was out like a light until the hurricane reached us around 1:45 a.m. Alas, the hotel lost power almost immediately (insert grumble here about Entergy, which owns the power infrastructure in the surrounding communities) so not much Farscape was had. :(
[identity profile] samantilles.livejournal.com on September 18th, 2008 02:37 am (UTC)
I didn't realize i commented as anonymous! eeps! and I grumble with you over power... our state is taking our power congolmerate to court over 120% price hikes they're trying to pass off on us... and we don't even have to get the hurricanes to lose power sometimes!

Cynthia was commenting on how our Ren Fest skills and supplies have been so handy during this time. The single cup coffee filter has been especially nice.

And praise Jeebus for the weather!
Mish[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com on September 17th, 2008 09:10 pm (UTC)
Yes! The crisp morning weather and the hiss of the propane cylinder brings back many a fond memory. My French Press coffee maker is only 1 cup at a time and will have to be remedied as soon as some actual supplies make it to the local stores. I'm not a pretty sight when forced to wait for my morning fix.

Hee! Jeebus is our household god, too, and has received MUCH praise for the weather. Are y'all also without power? I was hoping you were good as it seemed as if the West side was spared the worst of the storm's wrath. We saw Greg yesterday at Whole Foods; he's without power. We invited him for dinner but he didn't show. :(

We're ok, but we're on day 6 with no power.
Mish[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com on September 22nd, 2008 05:17 pm (UTC)
We're on Day 10 with promises we shouldn't expect to go beyond Day 14. I'd feel a lot better 'bout that if I'd seen any trucks in the area. :|

Take care of yourself! And hope things get back to relative normal for you soon.
Mish[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com on October 2nd, 2008 08:14 pm (UTC)
Thank you! Once they clean up the storm debris waiting patiently at my front curb and a lot of these mosquitoes die off, life will be normal.

(I'm trying to catch up on my comments, now.)

Oh, dear. I'm so sorry that you're having such a difficult time down there. And I'm very sorry about your MIL's house. I've seen some pretty horrible looking pictures of that area.

Don't worry about the lims. I can post reminders and get the voting up on the 23rd. Once we're done, we can take a little hiatus before we start in on round 2, yes?

Fingers and toes crossed that you get power back super soon. :)

(Better late than never, I hope.)

She's lucky in that her house is still standing and connected to its foundation but the entire first floor is a complete loss. She's lucky in that she had as much insurance as the industry would sell her. It's heart-breaking but it isn't a devastating life blow.

Thanks for handling the LIMS. :)

Glad to see that you survived.

On a side note at some point I'd like to visit with you on the subject of bad archeology movies.
Mish[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com on October 2nd, 2008 08:18 pm (UTC)
We did, indeed. It had its unpleasant moments but I always had indoor plumbing. Cannot underestimate the pleasure of indoor plumbing. *nods*

Bad archaeology movies? Isn't that redundant? ;-) Visit away!

Hi Misty,

Did you get the e-mail I sent you the other day?

I'm so glad you guys are OK!! I grieve the trees with you, though, especially your own fig tree. But I'm relieved to hear that the damage wasn't worse. Hope you get power back sooner than they estimate ... and yay for the not-sweltering temperatures!
Mish: Jack -- Brown & Yummy![identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com on October 2nd, 2008 08:20 pm (UTC)
Thank you. :) I get unnecessarily weepy over trees; I don't wonder sometimes if I wasn't a tree in a past life.

Yeah, it stinks. They got us electricity within 2 weeks of the storm so I can't complain. I mean, I'd have liked it a lot faster, of course, but they worked quickly on some serious damage in our neighborhood. *hugs back*

It's good to get an update from you, and hear that you're all okay. Hope you get power restored soon. Yay for relatively cool weather.
Mish: Cam -- Forearms[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com on October 2nd, 2008 08:22 pm (UTC)
It was almost as pleasant as being in Canada, weather-wise! ;-)

No more fig tree? SAD. (Uh. I'd never eaten figs before last week and I, uh. May be a little bit WAY OBSESSED with them now.)
Mish: Team -- Old Style (anim)[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com on October 2nd, 2008 08:24 pm (UTC)
VERY sad. It was a mature tree that shaped into a gorgeous tree when we pruned it a few years back. Figs are the food of the gods. We never ate the figs - I left them for the birds and squirrels - but it was a particularly loved resident in our backyard.
[identity profile] avidrosette.livejournal.com on September 17th, 2008 11:38 pm (UTC)
Glad you made it! It's great to hear that you and your family survived unhurt; the pictures of certain areas are horrific. It sounds like it's going to be a long haul with the power restoration and the clean-up. Good luck with it all!
Mish: Team -- Everyday Heroes[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com on October 2nd, 2008 08:26 pm (UTC)
(Congrats on winning LIMS! I hope you'll allow me to be an annoying person who again harangues you to start posting your icons. Ahem.)

We weren't anywhere near the photos of the devastated area. We had trees down and roof damage, yes, but we weren't in the storm surge.
[identity profile] avidrosette.livejournal.com on October 2nd, 2008 10:32 pm (UTC)
Thanks! Very surprising and thrilling just to make it to the end, really, with all the fabulous work that went on there. Thank YOU for making such a terrific place to play and learn.

Wonderful to hear that your power is back. I hope things are inching their way back to normal for you.

Yes, I have to post icons. This has been a heavy-duty family week, and I have to do a couple of other fannish things first, but after that I should be able to do it. Far from resenting your reminders, I'm flattered that you'd notice. :-) ::hugs::

{{ cyber hugs }}

so glad to read your update... and hope the energy gods are wrong, and the power gets fixed much quicker than they expect...

i'm sorry to hear about joe's mom's house... {{ vibes }} for dealing with that... i can't imagine how tough that will be...

Mish[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com on October 2nd, 2008 08:29 pm (UTC)
Thanks! We were without power for about 2 weeks but considering the staggering amount of work to be done -- the grid apparently came within minutes of total failure, which would have taken out power to much of Texas, they say -- so I'm not complaining. It took them that long to get to us because we were one of the neighborhoods with lots of trees and, thus, lots of damage. That's a nice problem to have (if the fallen trees don't hit your house, of course).
[identity profile] msreba.livejournal.com on September 17th, 2008 11:44 pm (UTC)
Hey
Glad to hear you made it all right! This is a mess. Ike wasn't as big as Rita but left a larger mess huh!
Mish[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com on October 2nd, 2008 08:30 pm (UTC)
Didn't it, though? Have they picked up your trees yet? They're working their way through our neighborhood but since we're in the back, we're still dodging mountains of ex-trees.
[identity profile] msreba.livejournal.com on October 13th, 2008 11:41 pm (UTC)
They finally picked them up last week know we are are waiting on FEMA.

Ooh, you may not get this for a while, so I just want to chime in with {{{hugs}}}, so there's nothing here you feel like you have to answer.

{{{{hugs}}}} I hope everything gets better quickly. We've been through two hurricanes that resulted in lost power for extended periods (besides other things, of course), and it wasn't fun either time.
Mish[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com on October 2nd, 2008 08:37 pm (UTC)
{{{{hugs right back}}}}

It never is fun but the fact that we had potable water and indoor plumbing -- which made it far more palatable than it would otherwise. That said, I'm awfully glad to have lights, air conditioning, and the internet again.
ext_2780[identity profile] aizjanika.livejournal.com on October 4th, 2008 07:55 am (UTC)
Yay! I'm glad you weren't without water and plumbing. When we lived on Cape Cod, we had a well, so we were completely without water when the power went out. After the hurricane there, we ended up going to stay with family for a while.

I'm glad to hear things are getting back to normal, though.
