Update
I've been absent from online for-ever. (I hear that said in an 80's Valley Girl accent.) There's no way I can catch up after nearly three months of absence so I'm just going to jump in:

- Thank you to everyone who wished me a happy birthday almost two months ago. It was my 11th annual 29th and I'm thinking next year I might have to admit to having made it to 30. ;)

- Thank you to [livejournal.com profile] paddies, who sent me a lovely Christmas card through the snail-mail. I don't know if you'll see this but it arrived on Christmas Eve so your timing was perfect!

- [livejournal.com profile] yams69, give me a call when you're back in town and ready to go do something low-key and baby-friendly. :) Sadly, I can't take a day off since I'm the only experienced employee in Houston this week but I leave the office at 4 p.m. most days.

- I've pre-ordered the first SG-1 movie. I hope it doesn't suck.

- Torchwood should be arriving in my hands sometime today. Now THERE is a show where suck could be of the life-affirming variety. ;)

- At the office, our permanent engineer staff tripled in November. Thus ends 10 months of importing engineers from around North America to cover the shortfall. Alas, this means I'm buried in newbies.

- [livejournal.com profile] jalabert, I have recovered your knitting from the warehouse (it rode to our storage facility when the luggage was stowed). I'm thinking of sending it ASAP if you agree to forgive me for disappearing for so long. *makes with the puppy eyes*

- If you upgrade your Windows software and the computer suddenly cannot talk to the internet, you might find, as I did, Zone Alarm is the culprit. You must *de-install* it, not simply stop it or shut down its process. I do not consider this an intuitively obvious fix.

- My laptop, Titania, is currently having a brain transplant because her HD failed. Fortunately, I'm assured her surgeon is a Genius(tm). I love Macs but the 60 GB hard drive is about the same cost as a 1 TB external drive. That's...painful. Between the malfunctioning software on the Windows box and the malfunctioning hardware on the Mac box, I've lost all of my e-mail and bookmarks.

- I hadn't made icons in *months* - hadn't even opened Photoshop. I'm struggling to regain some of that "muscle memory" but the new promo pics for the SG-1 movies are inspiring. Especially Teal'c and his new bling. JL? If you want to see them, they're in their usual locked place for your perusal/critique/etc. As soon as my laptop returns and I spend however much time as necessary to reinstall everything, I'll be available to chat again.

- I made a vegetarian version of pho last night. It was perfect food for a cold, rainy day. With its 2 hours of prep & cooking, though, I'm unlikely to be making it except for special occasions. Luckily tonight's leftovers won't take much time at all.

ETA:
I knew I'd forget something important! Thank you to [livejournal.com profile] evil_moopie for the pink panties, to [livejournal.com profile] mlspikie, and to [livejournal.com profile] ivorygates for the lovely LJ Gifts for, respectively: who knows why, my birthday, and for my birthday AND New Year's. I think that's everyone who gave me nice presents but I can't figure out how to access my prezzies on LJ and the e-mails announcing them have disappeared. (See above computer whining.) If I've left someone off, please accept my apologies.

Hey, girl! Glad to see you back!
Mish: DeeJ -- Sex?[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com on January 22nd, 2008 09:03 pm (UTC)
Thank you, thank you. It has been a long time and I've missed my online human contact. I much prefer it to the real-life kind I've been getting at work and at home with long-term house guests.
tejas[identity profile] tejas.livejournal.com on January 22nd, 2008 09:05 pm (UTC)
Work sucks.

House guests can too, no matter how much you love them. :-) I find I tend to love house guests who stay in someone else's house. :-)
Mish: DeeJ -- Followed Me Home[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com on January 22nd, 2008 09:10 pm (UTC)
Even on good days, alas.

I try not to complain. My mother decorated my house, wrapped damned near every Christmas present (and she made the most gorgeous packages!), and made the holidays even possible this year. She did me a *huge* favor and so I'm very grateful. But I have to admit that having my privacy back was very welcome. I would have dealt with my computer problems in a more timely fashion if I didn't have someone needing something from me nearly every waking minute from before Thanksgiving to after Christmas. New Years are good, cleansing things. :)
tejas[identity profile] tejas.livejournal.com on January 22nd, 2008 09:11 pm (UTC)
Oh, yeah. Solitude is a necessity of life. No matter how much I love being around people.
Mish[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com on January 22nd, 2008 09:28 pm (UTC)
Hee -- I don't even really love being around people. ;)

So, before I had my major meltdowns in the computer and icon fu arenas, I managed to make a single icon from the caps you kindly supplied me:

I'm hoping to make some more as soon as I get my mojo back. Since I don't know when that'll be, I'm presenting it to you now. I think of you whenever I see it. :)

*twirls in pink panties*
[identity profile] evil-moopie.livejournal.com on January 22nd, 2008 09:36 pm (UTC)
*glomps*

Yay! I love biggay!Teryl in those caps. :-D Thank you!

Very much looking forward to whatever you've got coming next.
Mish: Teryl -- Sunny Colors[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com on January 22nd, 2008 09:56 pm (UTC)
It'll be a wait, I fear. I've opened PS a bunch of times but...nothing. That poor icon has been patiently waiting for company for months and I decided it'll have to live as an only child for now. :(

I love biggay!Teryl, too. I had no idea she'd cozied up with another woman onscreen or I'd have been iconning those earlier.
[identity profile] evil-moopie.livejournal.com on January 22nd, 2008 10:35 pm (UTC)
Heh. Poor Teryl. She so desperately wants to be a Big Gay Pop Icon.

*has been considering a letter-writing campaign to the casting directors of The L-Word*
Mish: Teryl & Amanda -- Janet/Sam[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com on January 23rd, 2008 12:32 am (UTC)
She'd be such a good one! Hell, she's not only got the lesbian and bi contingent, but she has the singing, acting, and huge personality to be a beloved Diva for gay men. She's nice and outgoing, so she appeals to straight women. She appeals to everyone!

*recalls story of Teryl appropriating an L.A. cop car and personnel to get her to the Con on Time*

I think she'd be brilliant in anything. Maybe the L-Word would let her be the Bad Girl in Leather that she always wanted to be? Wait, that might be Dante's Cove-type material. ;)

Mish: Justin -- Drama Queen[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com on January 22nd, 2008 09:26 pm (UTC)
You gave me one of those LJ thingamajigs? I don't recall getting an e-mail about that. That's what the edit was about: belatedly acknowledging the gifts folks gave me while I was absent from the LJ.

I recall getting a b-day message and a nudge and a "are you still living?" e-mail from you, but I don't recall getting LJ goodies from you. :| Maybe I missed the e-mail? (Very possible. At one point, I downloaded 1900+ e-mails.)
[identity profile] roundrockronin.livejournal.com on January 22nd, 2008 09:34 pm (UTC)
Sorry, I suppose I should thoroughly read LJ posts rather than skim them. Also, sorry, no LJ gift goodies. Can you forgive me?

Seriously, though, good to see you back. I've missed bantering with you.
Mish: Teryl & Amanda -- Lipstick[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com on January 22nd, 2008 09:58 pm (UTC)
Pffft! If you read closely, then you couldn't have started to guilt-trip me. See, you missed the golden opportunity to make me think *I* had screwed up big time. You really aren't going to make a very Catholic mother at this rate...
[identity profile] roundrockronin.livejournal.com on January 22nd, 2008 10:05 pm (UTC)

Catholic mother?! Where did that come from?
Mish: B/J & Jen -- Family[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com on January 22nd, 2008 10:10 pm (UTC)
You'd rather be a Jewish mother? Either way, until you do a better job of sending people into all-consuming guilt trips, I'm afraid that I have to say in all honesty that you just aren't measuring up. ;)

Yeah, I missed me at it, too. That sucked because I'd been really looking forward to it but I managed to get dog sick the day of. I should have posted, called, sent a messenger pigeon, something once I got better but I've been made of fail for an entire 3 months. Not an excuse but the explanation is a lot of stress and my totally useless manner of dealing with it. :( Sorry.
[identity profile] avidrosette.livejournal.com on January 22nd, 2008 09:27 pm (UTC)
Nice to see you! Gorgeous Teal'c icon with this post. If that's a taste of things to come, I think we're going to be floored.

I saved an article for you from the NYTimes a few weeks back. It's too long to post here, so I'll put it in my journal this evening. :-)
Mish: Teal'c -- White Robes[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com on January 22nd, 2008 09:53 pm (UTC)
Aw, thank you. It's a fluke. The new Teal'c pictures were inspiring and I like what I did with them but most of them would probably be considered spoilers by spoiler-phobes (I find Teal'c's new bling interesting but some people really, really want to know nothing that might occur) and everything else I've touched just annoys me. *shrug*

The article sounds interesting. :) I'm looking forward to it. Thanks for thinking of me! *hugs*

My laptop, Titania, is currently having a brain transplant because her HD failed.

Oh, crap! That sucks! I must say I'm relieved that it happened long enough after I sold her to you as to make it less likely that I sold you bad hardware. I promise you I didn't think that I was. :( I hope all is repaired soon.
Mish: Janet -- Stray Hair[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com on January 23rd, 2008 08:34 pm (UTC)
Seriously, it isn't a problem. Well, it is in the sense that I'm spending money but it's not a problem you had control over. :) I know you would have said something if there was something wrong. I've had many months and a couple of plane trips with Titania since I received her.

Also? I was quite aware when I purchased a used laptop that things like this could happen -- and would not be covered by a warranty as they would have if I had purchased a new one. I wanted a used Apple more than I wanted a new Windows laptop, though, and I made my choice with my eyes open. I appreciate that you might worry that you could have predicted this, but that's completely not true. :)

I have kept Titania busier than I expected and have totally fallen in love with my Apple. I am a very happy laptop owner. I'm not even overly sorry that I'll lose the Photoshop on the old HD because doing graphics on the laptop didn't work out for me. I am spoiled by my large monitor.

My only complaint is that the Apple store won't return my old HD to me so that I could try a data recovery service should I find I need it at a future date. That policy still has not been explained to my satisfaction.
[identity profile] la-directora.livejournal.com on January 23rd, 2008 08:36 pm (UTC)
Uh...that old hard drive is your property. What possible reason could they have for keeping it? Seriously, I'd fight that if I were you.

And *whew* I'm relieved that you don't blame me. I wouldn't blame someone else, but then I am generally harder on myself than I am on others. :)
Mish: Janet -- Troubled / Puzzled[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com on January 23rd, 2008 08:42 pm (UTC)
It's too late at this point since I authorized her brain surgery yesterday morning. I will make them explain the policy when I spring her from jail -- and I might object on philosophical grounds and be a PITA for that reason but it's too late for actually recovering my old HD.

Of course I don't blame you! I used her almost daily for 6 months and *I* didn't know her HD was going to fail. I don't expect you to have ESP. ;) The possibility of a HD failure *did* cross my mind when I was considering my options. As did the failure of fans or power supply or screen...I thought about it and decided to chance it. I still feel like I got a good deal and I'm not in any way unhappy with my choice.

OMG how did I miss this?!? Happy (late) birthday! :D

I hope to be in town on Saturday (Jan, 29th). I'm waiting for a phone call from a restaurant that's looking at my book- if they finish with it by then, I'll come and pick it up. Otherwise, they'll probably keep it till the following weekend. If I'm there and you have time for lunch, would you like to get together? I miss you!

Mish: B/J -- Hotel!Sex[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com on January 29th, 2008 02:35 pm (UTC)
People only knew it was my b-day because of the stoopid requirement to have my entire friggin' b-day visible to everyone for purposes of assuring LJ's self-appointed police that I didn't magically morph into a 12 year old since the last time I gave them my b-day. The older I get, the less tolerant I get of having to declare myself all the time. It seems to me that it would be easy to set 3 levels of LJ: under 14, under 18, and over 18. You tell LJ your birthday and your setting is auto-determined. No need to declare or to have group mods constantly having to monitor members' info pages in the event someone removes her b-day from her profile. Previous to this obsessive-compulsive checking, I didn't have my b-day posted.

Er, you mean Saturday Feb. 3? That sounds good, although I don't know when my yoga class will end. Amy and I started yoga last Saturday and we're going to make it a weekly thing in the morning. What I don't know is what time we'll be taking the class.

I miss you, too! *BIG HUG*
