Greetings from New Jersey
Just dropping a quick note from the lovely wifi at Panera. Vacation thus far has been excellent. Fall is late this year, I guess, because I had beena ssured this was too late in the year for stunning fall color but the trees are a beautiful green, gold, orange, and red along the routes I've taken. Since last Friday, I've been to Maryland (Columbia, Baltimore, and Rockville), Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, and now Flemington, NJ.

[livejournal.com profile] jalabert and I saw the exhibit, At Freedom's Door: Challenging Slavery in Maryland, which was an exhibit produced by a cooperation between the Maryland Historical Society and the Reginald E. Louis Museum of Maryland African American History & Culture. By the way, if you're used to thinking of museums of African American history museums as hole-in-the-wall, holding-on-by-the-skin-of-their-teeth institutions, I hope you have a chance to visit the Reginald Lewis. The museum is brand new (~2 years old) and it's a true, modern museum in a a gorgeous, light-filled building and constantly changing exhibits. It's spacious, has a great gift shop (hey! this is important!), and the people were incredibly nice and helpful. Including the volunteer who drove us back to our car when the shuttle bus failed to return. I'm something of a museum snob and it's one of the better ones I've visited.

The next day we visited the Lincoln Memorial (awe inspiring and humbling), the Museum of Natural History (I'll grumble about the incongruity of the Ice Age giant ground sloths being adjacent to 4 myo Australopithecus afarensis another time), the National Archives (I saw the original Constitution, the Bill of Rights, AND the Declaration of Independence!!!!!!!!!), and a very short foray into the lobby of the Air & Space Museum. There's no way to do justice to the Smithsonian in only a day and I didn't even try. I'll have to go back at a later time.) It was an absolutely gorgeous day for wandering around outside, which was good since it's a minor hike down the mall to the Lincoln Memorial. Our current Idiot in Chief may not know what he's doing but the city's architects know how to make inspiring spaces. I took the time to explore the Vietnam and WWII memorials. They're both very moving in entirely different ways. More on that when I'm plugged in at a hotel. :)

[livejournal.com profile] yams69, his wife, their 4 mo daughter M, and I went to Philadelphia yesterday, my first time to spend any time in the city. It has been a goal of mine since I was a girl listening to Elton John's Philadelphia Freedom during the bicentennial. Saw the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall where both the Declaration and Constitution I'd seen the day before were hashed out. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful. Independence Hall is tiny I thought it was so much larger. :| I didn't get to see Ben Franklin's grave because we were too late but since they charge to see it, my disappointment was tempered.

I finally saw the Mutter Museum. If you're unfamiliar with it, it's essentially the teaching collections for 19th century medical students so it's macabre and involves a lot of "specimens." It's also a good intro to medical history and the efforts it took to convince people of the benefit of vaccinations. Very cool but also a bit disturbing. The human osteologist in me was utterly fascinated and I'd love to have access to the collections for study. And? I won't go into details but if you've ever needed modern treatment for bladder stones, all I can say is get down on your knees and thank your god that you didn't need that treatment in the 19th century.

We were having such a good time that despite my hauling a heavy camera bag everywhere, I never once remembered to take the photos of K, his wife, and gorgeous Baby Girl that I meant to. Bad, bad, bad me.

Today is an unknown as I'm not yet sure what [livejournal.com profile] immlass will be up for but tomorrow is transition day followed by the Holy Grail of museum-ing in the US for me: The Met and the Cloisters. :)

I didn't realize you were in/convenient to D.C. Bummer!

Whaha, welcome to my native land! Temperatures were up into the 70s well into September, so the trees are delayed this year -- in a week or two, though, the pretty will have passed I think, though, so you got the perfect time.

Fridayfridayfriday. Wheee!

Thank you! :) I've been coming here once a year for four years now. I'd say that I feel at home except I still haven't figured out the whole "two New Jersey Turnpikes that are both called I-95" that run east and west of Secaucus. I'm not even stupefied that I must veer right to turn left, though it often surprises me for the first day.

Friday! And Saturday! And Sunday!

I suspect you'll be able to check e-mail tonight. Hopefully. :)

If you get a chance, please give me a heads up tomorrow as soon as you get a sense of when you're going to hit Manhattan. I didn't make it into Manhattan today, and I have some stuff I have to pick up at my P.O. box before going to Austin the next day. I'd like to be able to do that before you get to town so we can spend time hanging out, and not going to my P.O. Box. :)

When staying at Casa [livejournal.com profile] mcroft and [livejournal.com profile] immlass? But of course! I had access at [livejournal.com profile] yams69's house, too, because he kindly dismantled his encryption because poor Titania wasn't up to the task.

I will call you as soon as I know. Judging by my flagging energy levels, I think I'm likely to need a nap.

Didn't realize you were driving some of the way to NJ. : D

Yes our fall is a wee bit late this year in Pennsylvania too. It was really hot and humid until about last week then it started getting cold and the leaves started to change. The fall colors are breathtaking. I'm so glad you had the chance to see them : D

Hope to see you on Sunday! Talk to you soon! : D
Mish: B/J -- Kissing & Sexy Justin Hair[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com on October 31st, 2007 12:41 am (UTC)
That's because I did something silly: I flew into NJ, drove out of NJ, and drove back into NJ. :) That is not really the best planning but it has worked.

I saw the Penn colors! I had some time in Philly yesterday and New Hope today. The more I visit Pennsylvania, the more I love it. I was in Pittsburgh in the late 1980s (just after their Renaissance) and found it far more beautiful than I'd been led to believe it was. Philadelphia has so much incredible history. The area along the Delaware River is gorgeous. I've found each trip to be enjoyable and full of gorgeous scenery.

I'm sure we'll be seeing each other on Sunday. :)
[identity profile] stacy-l.livejournal.com on October 31st, 2007 01:11 am (UTC)
Hey you're down by Longwood Gardens then (unless you're no longer in Philly). : )

I was just up towards Pine Grove Furnace on Sunday and the trees were so beautifully colored. I'm sure you had some beautiful scenery to drive through too. It's kind of odd having the leaves changing now but at the same time I'm loving it too : D

Yep I'm sure I'll see you on Sunday too though Becky and I decided to go with the cheap seats this year. Still we're going to try to get photo ops with Michael and Cliff. She's never met Michael before and I can't wait to see her expression when she walks up to him. LOL! : D

LOL I love watching Becky when she goes to cons. This will be her second one...of course we're getting up in the wee hours of the morning (about 3am) and driving to NJ in one day just for this con. Crazy I know, but hey...it's another "road trip"! Yeah!

See you Sunday! Take care! And enjoy your vacation too! : D

I'm back in NJ now. Tonight I'm in Lawrence Township and tomorrow I head for lovely (sic) Secaucus. I'll be palliating the pain of the scenery let-down by sneaking into Manhattan. :)

She was hysterical when meeting John. I'm sorry I won't have a front row seat to watching her meet Michael this year. (Are y'all planning to do the breakfast? I think it's possible to attend without a gold pass, yes?)

Thank you! Vacation has an annoying habit of flying by so much faster than the work week does so it seems as if I've just arrived when, in fact, I've had 4 days of vacation already. Have a safe trip to the con!
[identity profile] stacy-l.livejournal.com on October 31st, 2007 01:40 am (UTC)
You know I need to some day go around and tour NJ myself. I'm so close to it and have driven through it countless times but haven't ever really toured it. It's kind of a shame. I guess that's what happens when you're so close to something...you kind of forget about it. I do the same thing with Gettysburg and Hershey, even Lancaster. I've lived around them all my life that I find it so odd to think of all those people who travel up here just to see the battlefield and just to see the Amish...it's amazing really : )

I don't know if you can attend the breakfast without a gold pass. We'll have general admission. She's planning on getting an autograph from Michael too, but her first meeting will probably be photo ops. We're crossing our fingers and hoping they have plenty extra for us poor people to purchase too : )

She cracked me up when she met him. I still look at those photos and giggle honestly! Hey I'm just glad she has a good time and she's looking forward to going and to seeing you again as well. It's her mini-vacation : )

Take care and enjoy Manhattan. : )

OMG! Do you blame me? Joe is freakin' gorgeous! *drools* You and I were the same way when we met Gale last year!
[identity profile] stacy-l.livejournal.com on October 31st, 2007 03:38 am (UTC)
LOL! Someone's been reading my responses : D *snigger*

Yeah well you should have seen my face in Chicago when I walked up to Michael and Cliff for that photo op. We're talking jaw drop, red face and all (thanks all to you and your evil little comments : D )

Ah yes Gale is hotness. I never fully appreciated that until I came face to face with him and became suddenly SPEECHLESS! ah the memories : D
[identity profile] bleekabyebye.livejournal.com on October 31st, 2007 03:41 am (UTC)
I always like skimming the comments to people's blogs. Nosy am I! You can make new friends that way!

Yep, very red face! LOL!

Remember how quiet Gale was? So cute! Memories!

Ah yes one can never forget the infamous Rt 3 can they?

I'm getting a wee bit excited about our little road trip...yeah! : D

Gale was way quiet that day and I still couldn't say much to him...I'm such a wuss! : )

WHOA WHOA WHOA -- you met Gale?!?!? When was this? Do you have pictures? Spill, woman, spill. I need some distraction this evening and Gale is just the man to do it.

OMG! Yes! December '06. I went back and found my old posts. Hopefully, these links will work? I'm kinda an lj idiot when it comes to this technical stuff. Thanks!

No Mr. Nips for me this year (I saw him last month. Hee!)

Think of me as you visit his new digs--I'll wave at Texas as I fly west.
Mish: Gale Harold -- Torso[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com on October 31st, 2007 12:45 am (UTC)
I know! I'm still bumming about that, too. :( :( The Met simply won't be the same without you or without at least the prospect of meeting up afterwards to go and drool over Gale. You are very kind to humor me. :)

I'll definitely be thinking of you -- and missing you. However, I'm very excited for you. Denver is a gorgeous city and the Rocky Mountains are particularly spectacular in Colorado. I wish I were going to be there because then you could humor me when I drove you to Wyoming and made you tour the sites I dug at when I was still an archaeologist. ;)

Have a great time, m'dear, and I'll keep your cables safe for you until we meet again.
