Pimping My Friend
[livejournal.com profile] hwrnmnbsol has just posted one of my all-time favorite Tales from the Job Site, CHONNNGGG. I first read the story almost a decade ago and I still love it.

In high school, he went to a rival school and was my academic nemesis. I lost out to him all too often. It wasn't just in math or science -- one talent geniuses weren't uncommon and I could have taken comfort in being better than he in SOMETHING -- but math, science, literature, writing, history, and on and on...he was always winning the places I wanted. I'm sure he had no idea that I would mentally groan when he'd walk in the test room.

He didn't necessarily endear himself by turning up in my college freshman orientation group (ARGH!) and immediately dating the woman in the group with whom I'd bonded. He was sort of omnipresent. I doubt he was aware of how he'd thwarted me for years when we each still teenagers. Fortunately, I've mellowed over the years and now I can appreciate that, if I had to lose out to someone over and over and over and over and over (ok, I may still hold it against him a tiny bit), it was to someone who is brilliant.

And now, I want to go and get up to some stack mischief -- but you'll have to read the piece to get that. ;)

Dude, totally. My response to that story is, "I wonder if my building has storm drain stacks..." (Luckily for me and my building, my building DOES have an alarm on the roof entrance.)

Do I want to know what mischief you were up to when you discovered the alarmed status of your roof?

Oh, if only. No, I discovered there was an alarm on the entrance to the roof of my building one fine Saturday (or maybe Sunday) morning when I was sitting in my living room in my pajamas, and was suddenly rousted out of my state of calm by a VERY loud alarm. Now, understand that after Carlos moved out, one of the irrational fears I developed related to living alone for the first time in almost a decade was that my building would catch on fire, and I wouldn't be able to single-handedly get all three cats to safety without just setting them free on the fire escape. So when this alarm went off, I FREAKED. But it turned out that someone ELSE in the building, who thought getting onto the roof would be great fun, had tried to open the door, set off the alarm, and had run off. Luckily I live in the same little corner of our floor as the super, so I got the information quickly and was able to restore order and calm around the same time he got the alarm turned back off.

So, yeah, not attempting any roof-related adventures in my building, nope.

GAH! That would be highly upsetting.

I was buying a car a few months after Katrina and what I really wanted was a sporty little Miata. Joe is out of town all the time, though, so I was worried about being able to evacuate both dogs should that become necessary so I settled for an older, convertible Celica instead.

Not a month later, Joe was out of town and I was packing the boys into the car in my attempt to escape Rita.

Uh....okay!

(You have to get the uh in there to preface the agreement with the proper amount of imbecility.)

Whoa, hwrnmnbsol was a Houston boy? Where exactly did he go to school? I had no idea!

BTW, we're go for your visit (since I never gave you a final thumbs up). My better half has a friend coming that week also (but not on the Sunday or Monday we discussed), so our original plans are still good. Come on over! It'll be great to see you.

Indeed he was. He went to Stratford, the lucky dog. Meaning that we had to go up against him in the first round of any competition.

Yay! Sunday and Monday it is. I will plan to be there. I can hardly wait to meet the newest M and Aria and see y'all. And pet Maggie. I'm looking forward to it. :)
