Tropical Storms and Nominations
So, looks as if the forecasters missed the boat a little on Tropical Storm Erin. Specifically, the Weather Channel stationed their "man on the scene" down in Corpus Christi but it came in a bit north of there and put Houston on the dirty side of the storm. For those who don't live in tropical weather territory, that means that we're on the side of the storm where the winds are coming in from over the Gulf and are thus the most rain-laden. Glad I'm on vacation because the route I usually take home was underwater this afternoon. That would have sucked but I avoided that fate. Yay!

Erin never worried me but I'll admit that Dean makes me nervous. That one looks likely to develop into a killer storm and the water temps are primed to make it deadly. Luckily, Joe will be in town for Dean so I'll have help in closing down his business, my office, and our house before evacuating if it looks like it's headed this way. That's a nice bonus over 2005's Rita fun when I got to do that all on my own.

~~**~~

Thank you to whomever nominated some of my SG-1 icons for a Stargate fan award. I didn't know that the nomination period had opened - I'm not getting my memos! - and I had no idea there was room to nominate icons. I've nominated fic and videos in the past but don't recall ever seeing an icon category. That was completely unexpected. In fact, when I got the notice, I thought, "Oh dear, someone nominated the brilliant fic, Speak the Living, that [livejournal.com profile] paian wrote for me during the Teal'c ficathon and my name has accidentally been used as the author."

So, I was shocked that the noms were actually for me. I'm touched and honored. Thank you. :)

That's a nice bonus over 2005's Rita fun when I got to do that all on my own.

Following news on Erin and Dean gave me flashbacks to leaving Houston in advance of Rita. I was alone as the storm approached, trying to decide about leaving, and then driving north in the middle of the night. That experience led to my post-Rita massive decluttering and organizing project.

I'll be thinking of you!
Mish[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com on August 17th, 2007 02:55 am (UTC)
Thank you. :) Rita was seriously no fun and I ended up being stuck here in town since they screwed up the roads/gas. I'm hoping they have their act together this time. *fingers crossed* Actually, I'm hoping this thing comes nowhere near us or that shearing winds develop soon.

Erin so far hasn't been nearly the event that Allison was. Were you here for Allison? Now that one was misery. I've learned to pay attention until the storm reaches the East Coast.

Were you here for Allison? Now that one was misery.

I moved to Houston later that year. My friend there at the time blogged her way through the storm, whenever the power went on. She also had to drive to pick up (rescue) her daughter from summer camp out near Tomball. Since that experience was fresh in everyone's mind when I arrived, I received a lot of storm advice. Which was needed, as I'm only up to date on earthquake and fire preparedness as a California native.

When Rita was on the way, I was lucky to leave around 3:30 AM and be on almost empty highway all the way to Dallas. Making the decision to go or stay was tough, until [livejournal.com profile] rachelcaine called and said, "You're coming here, right? As in, tonight." I figured if they were concerned in Dallas, I should leave.

So I'll watch the NWS storm page and be thinking of you.

Had I not lived high and dry through Allison, I might have been fighting you for crash space at Rox's. :-) Though, I had several spots to go including one friend who said, "Bring the cats". As it was, I sat it out and was happy to do so. Ended up going over to my sister's the day after losing power, but we were only without power for a day or so.

Missing Allison was a good tactical move on your part. That took us all by surprise and was very, very un-fun. I would be in bad shape for earthquake or fire but I've got the tropical systems routine down.

Hopefully, this thing will die down and be more manageable. Or, if it must be a category 4 or 5, it can do like Brett did and hit the King Ranch down there on the Coastal Bend. Not a lot of people to evacuate, at least. *fingers crossed*

*puts on Awards team member hat*

I'm wading through awards email at the moment, but if you haven't sent anything regarding this, I'll be sure to deal with it. ;-)

*takes off Awards team member hat and puts on Houstonian hat*

Ah, yeah, today was spent wondering why the devil I was at work during tropical weather. ;-) That was *after* boatingdriving through the Medical Center and blessing my Saturn SUV every three seconds. ;-)

I'm just glad we had that week or so of hot dry weather to wring a bit of moisture out of the ground. The geysers shooting up out of the storm sewers were a delightful sight, as always. I'm sure the folks working on raising the banks of Braes Bayou along MacGregor were equally delighted by it all.

And now there's Dean. Only time will tell, but I gotta say, I'd rather he made landfall here than having him go over and harass New Orleans.

Nice hat collection!

Feel free to delete the e-mails I sent. :) I had trouble logging in using the URL in the e-mail but, of course, as soon as I sent an e-mail about it, I found a link that worked. I sent another "never mind" e-mail.

I didn't even get out of the house today. The thunder started early this morning, as I'm sure you know, and Brinkley retains his stray dog his fear of thunder so we snuggled for most of the day. My little car is low slung so I avoid driving through floods. :) I, too, am glad we had a week of drying but I'll admit the relief from the heat was welcome. I always prefer rain to broiling in the summer. Of course, now we'll have another mosquito explosion. When we worked out int he backyard a couple of weekends ago, there were so many mosquitoes that I was bitten almost a dozen times despite my wearing repellent. :|

I'd definitely rather that Dean came here than hit New Orleans. We're better equipped and we've fully recovered from Allison while they're still struggling post-Katrina. What I'd really prefer is to have some shearing winds develop, Dean gets cut to a manageable tropical storm, and then it takes a sharp northward veer and hits the drought-stricken Mississippi, Alabama, Florida panhandle, and Georgia. I have a bad feeling about Dean, though, and I'm hoping I'm wrong.
tejas[identity profile] tejas.livejournal.com on August 17th, 2007 03:09 am (UTC)
I like the way you think!

Hey, since we've got Dean, is Sam on the list as well? :-)

I hear you about the low slung car. If I still had my wagon, I'd've been seriously sweating it today. They had us 'sheltering in place' for most of the day as the campus was pretty much an island.
Mish: Ackles -- Nekkid Dean in Bed[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com on August 17th, 2007 10:14 pm (UTC)
It only seems right to have a Sam storm. As long as Sam and Dean are nice, friendly, temp-busting tropical storms that don't turn around and double back on us I'm all for them. Though we really, really don't need Dean's rains. I think we handled Erin fine because we'd had that week to dry. We won't have that for Dean and that's partially why I'm concerned.

I like our neighborhood. Even though we had a lot of rain, it didn't flood much and so it was just a day to enjoy being with the dog. I really can't complain. But once I'm out of the neighborhood, there are flooding problems and my car would have been a casualty. It's only on those days that I get this city's obsession with trucks and SUVs. :)

I'm with you. I hope whatever happens, they know soon enough to tell us to stay home from work that day. My apartment is high and dry. Between it and work... not so much. ;-)

Congrats on the nominations! :)

Thank you!

Congratulations!

Hope everything with Erin and Dean works out okay. (I feel bad, because obviously it's a hurricane and it's serious, but I've been watching the news and giggling a little -- every time they start talking about how 'Dean is coming' or 'Dean to strike XYZ,' I keep thinking about the Supernatural fans on my flist.)
Mish: Ackles -- Eep! (anim)[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com on August 17th, 2007 09:45 pm (UTC)
Thank you!

Oh, if I weren't living in hurricane territory I'd probably feel the same. I *did* think, "if I were superstitious, I would find the name Dean to be a bad omen," when I first heard it. I knew the SPN fans on my list would find it humorous. But I think I'm a bit too raw from the Katrina disaster and the nightmare that was trying to get out of Houston right before Rita to find the humor in it until the threat is past. We still have a lot of New Orleans residents here in Houston who are struggling and living in less than ideal conditions. And truly, that's a "there but for the grace" situation. I'm lucky. Joe and I have family who would take us in and help us get back on our feet if we truly needed it but I worry for those without that support.

In retrospect I'm sure I'll regain my sense of humor eventually. I just really don't want to spend the next couple of days boarding up, clearing out the gardens, pulling the BBQ inside our tiny dining room, packing heirlooms, and stuff. That's really not any fun. And while category 1 and 2 storms don't really bother me - the tornadoes do but not the storm itself - I've lived through a category 3 hurricane and it's absolutely not fun. The aftermath sucks, too. I'd really rather give it all a miss.

Eeep...I'm sorry, I didn't mean to seem dismissive. I'll be thinking about everyone down in the area, and hopefully it'll pass without too many problems or too much damage.
Mish: Vala -- Dreamy[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com on August 19th, 2007 12:50 am (UTC)
Oh no! I didn't take your comment to be dismissive. I, too, would find it all very amusing if I lived anywhere else. Hell, I'd have found it all more amusing even three years ago. As it is, he's just a headache for me right now and I really, really don't want to deal with an evacuation.

I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for you, that you don't have to.

congrats oh iconic one!...hee...I got a nom to for one of my stories..tickled me pink it did...weee! And yes..if all we get from Dean is rain I will be soooo happy(now that I'm close to the Gulf Coast it would just be my luck for it to slam us though)...I'm getting tired of triple digits with humidity...bleh...and to make it even worse I have to drive to Florida this weekend..heading from one frying pan to another..grr
Mish: Sam -- Beauty[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com on August 17th, 2007 09:52 pm (UTC)
*bows* Thank you. :) It was a complete surprise to me. Congrats on your nomination, though I'm not surprised that you were nominated. You give a lot to the fandom and I'm glad to see that you're getting the recognition for it.

I would love to send an emasculated Dean your way. I've been feeling your pain in the hot, rain-free zone. We had a bunch of summers like that 5 or 6 years ago and I have no idea how I lived through them. That kind of weather makes me depressed, actually. But I'm a weird one -- my ideal weather is gray, overcast, and rainy. I'm born to live in Seattle or, even better, Vancouver.

Stay safe on your trip to Florida. Where in Florida are you going? I have a hell of a lot of family there; both my mom's and dad's families are native to the state. I think I'm probably related to 2/3 of St. Augustine. :)

Mish[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com on August 19th, 2007 12:52 am (UTC)
I have no idea where that is. We left Florida when I was the tender age of, er, three? four? Somewhere around there. I've been back for family funerals and one graduation.

Those seem like excellent ways to combat boredom. :)

Mish: Thor -- Party Man[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com on August 17th, 2007 10:02 pm (UTC)
Some kind soul nominated seven of my icons. *iz stunned* Not necessarily my personal faves but in addition to the icon I'm using on this comment (and I do really like that Thor), these were nommed:

The Sam/Vala one greatly surprised me because it was quite experimental and wasn't successful for what I was trying to do. But someone liked it and so I'm surprised but pleased it resonated with someone. :)
[identity profile] selmak.livejournal.com on August 17th, 2007 10:40 pm (UTC)

Mish: Hammond -- Yeehaw![identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com on August 19th, 2007 12:56 am (UTC)
We often are our own toughest critics. I know what I meant for the thing to look like and so I see the icon and see what it isn't. I know that affects my view of it. Personally, I don't like that Sam/Vala icon. I came very close to just deleting it but I don't make enough Vala icons and I don't make enough femslash-y icons so I kept it for that reason. Obviously, somebody disagrees with my opinion and that's her right. I'm surprised but no less honored.

Take care
Please take care if Dean heads your way! We live about 6 to 7 hours north of you, outside of the DFW area. So we don't get the winds from the hurricanes but if it heads the right way we will get the heavy rains. Its starting to look like it might be one of those years where every hurricane heads for the Gulf.
Mish[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com on August 21st, 2007 10:33 pm (UTC)
Re: Take care
Happily for us (unhappily for Mexico), Dean has decided to give us a miss. My main concern in leaving the coast is to avoid the tornadoes. Well, obviously avoiding the winds of a Cat 5 hurricane is also important but even a Cat 3 spawns tornadoes. Our house and our trees are not up to those challenges.

Yeah, I'm not so happy about the storms' affinity for the Gulf. :(
