Preliminary planning for NYC/NJ trip
It's time to begin nailing down the details of my trip to the great states of New York and New Jersey. I'm tentatively looking at Oct. 26-Nov. 5/6. That gives me a weekend up there where I don't have any plans!

- [livejournal.com profile] yams69** are you still reading my LJ? I got the baby announcement (WOO! I didn't even know M was pregnant!). How does that affect your time? Will y'all be available to visit? I know this means you'll have less flexibility in schedule so I want to know your life schedule early so I can make plans to see you, M, M, M, and A. Whoa - you have Triple Ms. Very cool. :) I could plan to rent a car/room in the area if that would make visiting easier.
- [livejournal.com profile] mcroft and [livejournal.com profile] immlass - I know I'll be seeing you at the end of this month (yay!!!) but I want to make certain to see y'all on this next trip, too. Last time my trip got planned up way too quickly.
- [livejournal.com profile] la_directora - I usually dither about museums vs. traveling to Connecticut or Philadelphia but this year there's no question: I'll definitely be going to the Met to see the new digs for the Greek and Roman collections (and Egyptian? I don't know the planned completion date for those) and that means I must make up for missing the Cloisters last year. I hope I'm getting on your calendar early enough to plan a trip to the Cloisters with you. :)
- [livejournal.com profile] jalabert - I don't have to ask. I EXPECT that you'll continue to be the world's best friend who kindly meets my bus or walks me to the exact train I should get on because you know I'm a Texas girl. :) You're the one who agrees to traipse through Times Square because I've promised my mail carrier that I'd bring him back a Hard Rock NYC pin. I adore you. This year I'm looking to add a few more days on to the trip so that we can take a trip to some place you want to go. We talked about Tarrytown and the castle or even Sleepy Hollow. Or a trip over the Physician's College in Philly. You tell me and we'll go do it. Similarly, I'm assuming that you and Söös are planning to stay with me again in NJ for the con? I need to book a room soon.

Also? I know that a ton of my f-list lives up in there and I'd like to see if we could plan some kind of get together. Hey, a girl has to eat dinner each evening and lunch each day. Anyone on the f-list in those parts is welcome to chime in and suggest a date/time that would work for her. :)

The Stargate con is Nov. 2-4 so those days are already booked.

So, I've got a very full mental schedule but now I need to check with youse guys. Does that time period look good?

**See what deleting your LJ did?? They must have purged it and now you're listed without even a head. *sniffle*

I used to spend a lot of time in Tarrytown. I have a friend who was a guide at Lyndhurst, where you can go to see how 19th Century robber barons got away from it all.

I've been to Tarrytown many times but it was always for work. I've *seen* the castle from the back of a taxi but I haven't ever been there. If I can mute my reaction to the excesses, I imagine it would be great fun. I did enjoy my trip to the Morgan Library last year, even though the excesses do make me squirm a bit.

If y'all are planning a trip, does that mean that you'll be busy prep'ing for the trip the week before?

By many, of course, I mean I used to travel there quarterly. But since the only touristy stuff I'd done while there was to take the train to Manhattan and sometimes I'd stare out the office window at the machine moving the lane barricades on the Tappanzee (sp?) Bridge, I can't say that I'm familiar with Tarrytown beyond how to take the train there. :)

Um. We're still figuring out when we'll come to Texas, which may cross with your visit. Possibly Nov 2 - Nov 11.

My first thought was, "oh shit!" but then I realized that I wouldn't be available for Nov. 2-4 anyway, so my following you to Texas might be a good thing. Do you think y'all would be available the week before? If not, we should plan to meet up in Texas. I want to avoid last year's "near visit."

Or, since I'm expecting K and M to be far less mobile this year, I could rent a car.room in the area and plan to have dinner with y'all and a dinner with K/M or something. I'm flexible. I've learned to love rural New Jersey. :)

I really, really hope I'm not interpreting this correctly to mean that the only time you'll have free for museum-ing is October 28th and 29th, as I'll be in Chicago with my mom that weekend. But I imagine I'll come back on Monday, and your con doesn't start until that Friday, so hopefully mid-week museum-ing might work? (It'll be less crowded anyway, so *fingers crossed*.)

Oh, and you'll also see me at the end of this month, too. Yay! :)

I haven't got anything set in stone, yet. If [livejournal.com profile] jalabert's schedule works out, I'd really like to spend the first part of the trip tooling around the area in some place we haven't yet visited. So far, this is what I see:

Arrive Oct. 25/26: date depends on jalabert's schedule
Oct. 27 - Nov. 1: No solid plans. I'd like to go to the Halloween Parade again but if there's something cool to do elsewhere, I'll change my plans.
Nov. 2 - Nov. 4: Con
Fly out Nov. 5/6: I usually fly out on Mondays since museums are closed and people are normally back at work.

I'm definitely of the opinion that we should go to museums on work days. I try to find non-museum things to do on weekends because I hate crowds.

Oh, and the part I forgot to mention...hopefully by then I won't have a day job. :)
Mish[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com on August 7th, 2007 07:45 pm (UTC)
Which is very cool and I'm looking forward to finally having a good visit but I know that you'll still have work, even if it isn't a day job. I don't want to impose or presume that you'll be a Lady of Leisure Who Lunches. ;)

However, I think I can guarantee we'll be at the Cloisters on one of those non-day-job-days.

While I don't expect to be a Lady of Leisure Who Lunches, I am hoping to be a Lady of Freelance Who Is In Charge Of Her Own Schedule. (If I haven't managed to do that by then, I'll probably have shot myself anyway.)

Understood. :) Jalabert and I have been discussing renting a car when I first arrive and taking a road trip to Baltimore and Philadelphia to visit various historical sites and the Mutter Museum in Philly. That takes Friday thru Monday off the table for when I first get there. So, Tuesday-Thursday are looking like when I might be in town. It's all up in the air at this point.

Hey! Love that Gale icon! stacy_l and I are planning on driving out to the con the day Michael Shanks is there. We'll probably bump into you then!

Yep, I'm still reading!
I think we'll be around then. (Hey, didn't you come around Halloween last year too?) We're happy to entertain company as long as you rave appropriately about little M (it'll be really easy :-) ). She's actually okay with traveling, too, but screaming baby at home is just easier to deal with than screaming baby in public. If you're up for a trip out of the city and into rural NJ/PA, we could show you New Hope this time -- definitely worth checking out! Ping me by email and we can iron out the details.

Re: Yep, I'm still reading!
Yay! Color me very happy. First and foremost -- CONGRATS! I'm so very excited for you and M. There are people in this world who I think really, really should be parents and you're definitely high on that list. I was surprised by the announcement since neither of you had mentioned anything like it but I'm thrilled to pieces. :) I have great confidence that I can even honestly rave about Little M. Knowing her parents, I know she's destined to be wonderful.

I'd be thrilled to visit with y'all at your home; whatever is easiest for y'all is good for me. My current plans are to fly in, rent a car, and hit some tourist spots in Maryland and Philly with JL. We'll be returning from Philly probably on Monday, Oct. 29. I would love to see y'all but I don't want to be added work. I don't want to impose and I know that new babies = No Sleep. Maybe I could do something like buy a dinner and bring it over? I'd like to do my part rather than be the annoying guest who requires extra work. Just let me know. :)

I'd love to see New Hope. How does your schedule look? If y'all are working during the week, maybe JL and I could rearrange the days we head out of town? I'm willing to be flexible to work with your schedule. I'm the one on vacation and can adapt as needed.

I'll e-mail this as soon as I can get my stupid e-mail to work again. For some reason, I can't send e-mail and I can't login to the webmail. We're running out now but I'll try my gmail account when I get back.
