SG-1 10.11 -- "The Quest, Part 2"
Spoilers, ahoy! Wish I had room for a Daniel icon with the square glasses because da-yum! he sizzles in those.

I liked this episode! Highlights included: Daniel being hot & brilliant, Puff! (I love Teal'c!), Daniel being hot & brilliant, Teal'c grabbing Cam's arm, Teal'c going out to slay the dragon, Daniel being hot & brilliant, they found Merlin, Daniel being hot & brilliant, Sam punching Ba'al, Daniel being hot & brilliant, Daniel doing the mind zapper thing, Daniel being hot & brilliant...well, I suppose the trend is more than obvious at this point. :)

Seriously, I've been wanting some follow up on the whole, "Used to be an ascended being" thing and I'm thrilled, thrilled, thrilled to see a little bit of it. (I wish we'd gotten something like that for Sam in the post-Jolinar era, too.) But for all that I was enjoying it, am I the only one who was having "Absolute Power" flashbacks? Given the gift of knowledge for how to build the "defensive" weapon? It was eerily familiar; I wonder if the writers were aware of that?

One of the saddest things about the series finale is that I have the certainty that they do not have the time to explore these interesting developments and their consequences rather than just fearing yet another think-y storyline will be dropped in the dust by the writers. *sigh*

I'm disappointed that the writers can't do more with Ba'al than have him hanging around, making disparaging comments. He's supposed to be evil, not petulant and lippy. *rolls eyes* Yeah, I enjoyed it when Sam punched him - he was annoying enough by then that he'd more than earned it - but the canon-loving side of me wandered how it was that both Sam and Teal'c could so easily push him around since I can well remember the day when the goa'uld had unbeatable physical strength. Yeah, whatever. It was a curiously timed bit of catharsis after the Don Imus week. Sam may have punched Ba'al for his comment but I saw Don Imus go down. ;-)

I liked Cam in this episode. He still isn't in charge of anything but he does best when interacting with his team and I loved, loved, loved the Teal'c/Cam this week -- as well as the Sam/Cam, Daniel/Cam, and the Vala/Cam. Actually, I enjoyed Vala, too. She was toned down a bit and showed genuine concern for Daniel. Wish this was how they always wrote these two characters.

While the orici (or however that's spelled) was waving her hand over the frozen DVD, it occurred to me that the writers had finally gotten their leather-clad bimbo. Anise may have fallen flat but the new chick is just another Anise. I know, I know; Vala pranced around in her tight leathers but there's this huge diff because Claudia Black can make anything work. She has a better written part, for certain, but there's so much there there, that she can pull off the bimbo costumes and still be more than just a scantily clad beautiful woman. The orici, on the other hand, looks like a cheap Halloween version of a dominatrix.

Those are relatively minor grumbles for me, though. The team was together. The transporting from planet to planet in a self-contained loop to protect against the Ori and their ilk was cool. Cam and Vala were part of the team rather than stealing the limelight. Lots of problem solving. COntinuity with some former seasons. Very nice CGI dragon. Dry Teal'c humor. Teal'c the stoic warrior. Hot Daniel. The plot moved along well.

The team goes home empty-handed and minus Daniel -- *sniff* -- but then again Daniel has Merlin's memories and some of his knowledge. I know a fairly big plot spoiler coming up; it has been nicely set up here and I'm looking forward to it.

YES! YES!

Oh thank you for agreeing with me. Janet and I were discussing that as we watched the last SG episode. Morena is pretty, a very pretty thing. She was wonderful as a companion as all she had to do was look "Hot" in Serenity/firefly but her character is weak and two dimensional. (and I'm being nice and giving her two dimensions only because her breasts have been put into the Breastplate o' Fanboyism.)

Morena is beyond pretty, honestly. She's been particularly gifted by genetics. I can see why she'd be cast as a dark, ethereal beauty. I haven't seen her work elsewhere so I have only SG-1 to judge by. I know she has been given very little to work with but success as a character in SG-1 has a lot to do with what you bring to the table because the writers rarely give anyone a meaty role.

I don't think, for instance, that Vala was particularly well-written in Prometheus Unbound, which seemed to be mostly about rolling around on the floor with Michael Shanks and sexually harrassing Daniel, but Claudia made her a force to be reckoned with. Janet rarely had a lot to work with early on but Teryl blew us away in her first episode. She was good enough that she made it look easy; all it took was that bland blonde doc they tried to foist onto us to prove that. I know it's a pleasure to see Teryl perform live; I think I'd really enjoy seeing Claudia in a play.

Morena's beautiful, otherworldly...and that seems to be the limit to what she's projecting. I don't get a sense of ancient evil, madness, cold brutality, strength, calculating intelligence, menace, True Believer fervor, or, well, anything from her. Her character is too pivotal to be a blank slate. I need to know her motivations, her beliefs, what drives her to be a "charismatic leader." She's gorgeous, and I've bitched time and again about how it's beautiful evil that's harder to resist (hey - Ba'al has quite the following despite doing some wicked nasty things to Jack). I suppose my problem is that she's all beautiful and no evil?

Yes, that sums it up. Morena's character is.... petulant. That's the only word I can think to describe her.

The problem is that's the only word. :(

The brilliant Emperor Cartagia from Bab 5 who was petulant. Of course, he was many other things, too, and that's what made him a truly evil character. I would love to see the team go up against a truly slimy, evil, scares me kind of villain.

I thought pilot-episode Apophis had that potential. Ba'al had that potential. And...well, maybe Hathor. SG-1 is a very cool concept and I've always wished that their adversaries would be challenging.

Tons of links to former episodes in this one. The knowledge to build defensive weapons? Absolute Power. (We'll see if that link continues or develops differently.) The lightning killing the soldiers? Maternal Instinct. Nods to Jack and The Fifth Race. "Jack gets healing powers; I get telekinesis." Lost City. Then you have the whole Ascended arc and the tie to Morgan le Fey from the Pegasus Project.

I adore continuity.

This has been one of the few episodes where I really really felt the love. it felt like a team episode, even if Daniel-centric. Cam has really matured as a character. Vala is learning what it means to be on SG-1. Some say Sam was kind of rough in this episode, but she was very much like her early self to me. Teal'c didn't do much but his presence was one of satbilty and control.

And the best part? They all were invested and cared about each other. THAT is what I come to this show for.

Makes me sad we couldn't get more of this is RDA's last days on the show, but I'm glad that S10 will go out on some high notes.

Adria didn't bother me as much in this episode because I finally bought that she was a spoiled brat, emotionally immature. I didn't buy it in the other episodes. Ba'al, well, I wish we could still see more with Ba'al, but since the Goa'uld have been defeated, he's dropped the whole god complex. He's an opportunist and I think he plays it well. He's doing what he needs to do to survive.

These are characters that i like. Sam did science stuff. Cam came to terms with his position. Vala is dealing with having to watch others be selfless and then be selfless in turn. Teal'c is the rock. Daniel is heroic and knowledge seeking to his own detremient. They were all in character and their best qualities and flaws really came into focus here.

I adore continuity.
YES! Continuity is our friend. I wish we always got this much. :) (Yes, I was sitting on the sofa, squeeing, "Oh my god! Somebody actually sat down and watched the show before writing this episode!")

I really wish we were going to have the time to explore the parallels between this episode and Absolute Power. This episode, to my mind, could just as well have been titled, "Absolute Power 2" and "The Quest 2." I would love to see them delve into the unintended consequences of downloading Merlin's knowledge (or a part of it) and building a weapon. That's something I've thought Stargate was always good about: a newer, more advanced machine was never the whole answer. It was just as important, if not more so, that the right people with the right motivations be involved. And even then, just having good intentions wasn't enough. "We don't need their stuff; we need them as friends."

I'll be shocked, though, if they explore this side. Not enough time left in the series and the writers are fond of dropping whatever storyline I think is fascinating. *shrug*

I loved the teamy goodness. They went through the gate multiple times! They all worked together towards a common goal! They cared! They sacrificed. Loved it. I didn't see Sam as kind of rough. I don't think her part was necessarily as exciting as it could have been but it was appropriate to her character to have working on the DHD. She was using her unique knowledge to help the team escape. Nobody else on the team could have done it.

I loved that she didn't take shit from Ba'al about women (and Tau'ri). For continuity's sake, she shouldn't have been able to punch him down like that but it was good to see Sam standing up, demanding respect for herself and her abilities. For too long it has been Weak Sam so I was happy to see a return to a confident woman even if it meant some canon breaking.

Teal'c! As usual, his is a small role but he was brilliant. The Puff comment had me dying laughing. Loved his grabbing Cam's arm -- they are SO doing it! -- and going out to slay the dragon. No words, perhaps, but a strong reminder that CJ is a superb physical actor and can convey emotion and even thought with his body.

It's much harder to watch someone sacrifice/endanger himself than it is to do it yourself and I'm thrilled to little pieces that the writers got this. It's the sort of subtlety I've despaired of ever again seeing on SG-1. Vala was pitch perfect and Claudia blew me away, again. I'm not really a fan of the effect Vala usually has on the team dynamic but I am a huge, huge fan of Claudia.

Just...loved the team in this. *big, happy sigh*

Daniel icon with the square glasses

I'm still not on board with the square glasses. I think they're wrong for his face, which is longer and oval. He could do with smaller glasses than he used to have, but he needs more of an oval shape or something more roundish (curvy, not round like Harry Potter's glasses). *g*

:( I didn't really think I was but in this episode I thought he was immensely hot. I don't think he'd looked that hot in a long while.

He seems to spending more time sans glasses these days so maybe we can all be pleased. :)
