Inside Idiots' Heads -- SG-1
10.04 -- Craptastic Insiders

I hated that episode with the passion of a thousand burning suns. I cannot believe I have been mistaken for nine years; I thought that Sam was a member of the military, trained to deal with all sorts of unhappy situations, including torture and death.

How absolutely stupid is it to have her hand over the entirety of the Ancients' database (have we forgotten that they protected it just so that the snakes could never get their hands on it?) because Ba'al threatens to go in the other room and kill Barrett?!?!?!?!?! Yes, let me repeat: to go into the other room. And kill Barrett. So, what does she do? She hands it all over. That's right, she hands over everything so that life in the galaxy can be wiped out rather than bear the thought of the mere threat that Barrett might be killed. In the other room.

And she really does, "just hand it over." No tricks. I mean, it's not as if Ba'al checks to see that what he has is a list of gate addresses rather than, say, a stunning collection of Girls Gone Wild videos or Dr. Lee's fabulous footage of out of control plant growth. I kept waiting for her to reveal her clever plot because Ba'al, like me, should have been going, "Hey - that was too easy! What trick is she pulling?" Kind of like with the Aschen, where the first address links to the black hole gate. Or, that the program would fry the computer system (hey, it's sci fi and we ignore things like Dells are not, in fact, intergalactic plug and play machines.) But no, the episode ended and Sam handed over everything and Landry patted her wee, feeble head and told her that she made the right call. *barf*

I've bitched repeatedly that I hate Jack/Sam because of what it does to Sam. How it strips her of the intelligence and competence that I prize in her because the writers can't write her in a romantic scenario without giving her a lobotomy. I was, apparently, mistaken. The writers don't need 'ship to degrade and humiliate her. They can do it all on their very own. *sigh*

Really? If the suckitude of that scenario doesn't leap out and hit you, then my rant isn't going to make it any more obvious. This episode should be retitled to, "How Sam Misses Every Clue and Gives Away Tip Top Secret Data but the Men Pat Her on the Head Anyway." Seriously. This makes me so f'in angry that I'm still not coherent. I'll try again later but that just sucked.

Not even 20 Ba'als could save it for me. I adore Cliff Simon - though why he's running around in those god-awful gray jumpsuits is beyond me - but the character-rape was just too much for me to enjoy his turn on the stage.

I want the Sam who, facing death at the butt end of a staff weapon, pleaded with a drugged Martouf to resist. I want the Sam who resisted torture rather than reveal where Teal'c was in New Ground. I want the Sam who fought through some painful memories of Jolinar's escape to get her team and Dad out of Hell. I want Sam.

I'm still fuming. I got up and walked out of the living room and slammed my bedroom door shut. Roomie and his friends thought I was pissed at them. Till I walked out and ranted for five goddamn minutes, informing them that no goddamn LTC in the USAF operating under a secret installation would *ever* do what the fuckhead writers made her do.

And they're going to do it again. In "Company of Thieves." I want revenge.

PS -- two things. 1. I love that icon. 2. OT, sorry, but I really like the layout and color of your LJ. I may be pissed off, but I'm not blind. ;)

lol! Thank you for the design compliments. That means a lot knowing that you have impressive graphics chops.

I wrestled with the icon and woke up in the middle of the night with the wording I wanted. I had to come in, make it, and edit the post to include it because I wanted something Sam-based that expressed how the real Sam (the one that I know and love, anyway) would react to that pathetic "Sam."

Thank you! I like the LJ style and it's easy on my fatigued eyes. Lots of other peoples' talent led to it and this is normally where I'd give you all the links because I'm overly fanatical about giving credit where it is due but I think that's lots more info than you wanted. If you do, I'd be more than happy to share but otherwise I'll stick with, "thank you!"

Well, can I steal that icon? Purdy please? ;)

And you're welcome. :) I understand about having to get up and work on something, just so your brain doesn't a) bug you all night, and b) you might possibly forget what you were gonna do come the next day. *g*

this is normally where I'd give you all the links

G'head. I won't mind. Not that I'm planning on changing my LJ anytime soon, but I love learnin'. ;)

Quick answer because my link has gone wonky and who knows when I'll get to post anything long again. You're more than welcome to the icon! I'm very happy to share. :)

I'll post more when my DSL connection stabilizes. Grrrrrr...

Yay! My internet connection looks good for now. SInce the issue is line quality inside the house, the problem will be intermittent until the repair guys get here in a few days.

G'head. I won't mind. Not that I'm planning on changing my LJ anytime soon, but I love learnin'. ;)

Oh! Me, too! I love new knowledge.

This LJ style is Transmogrified and is completely customizable. I have no idea why LJ voters didn't pick it as a basic pre-set because it's tons more innovative than most of the styles chosen. I prefer it to any other. Which, I suppose, is obvious since I'm using it.

I got the color palette from the linkware set named Wide Open from Groovy Lizard that I use on my website. Normally, I'd feel bad cribbing the colors so directly since I can't add a link to them in my LJ as a header or footer. I asked them to quote me a price to buy it as well as a price to have them customize it for use on my blog and photo program. They put me off a couple of times and never gave me a price. I've made a good faith effort and I figured what I took from them was a palette for here but they didn't do the coding so I only feel a smidge of guilt over it.

This is very cool. :) Doesn't look like it leaves room at the top for a header graphic, but that's probably just my not seeing it right.

I love the look of your website, too. I thought I'd been there before but I don't remember this scheme. It's very simple and stylish and clean. I like that. :)

Don't know why they didn't accept this design either. I'm curious now. What designs were voted in? I haven't noticed any new ones lately. But then I don't go look till I'm ready to change my LJ.*g*
Mish: Sam - Beauty[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com on August 7th, 2006 10:14 pm (UTC)
I did a little poking around because headers aren't anything I've looked into. I know that the style can be manipulated to take an image; the style's author [livejournal.com profile] absolut has an image in her header though it isn't a traditional header pic. It isn't intuitively obvious from the options, though, how to do it. I suspect that's what the CSS override accomplishes.

Thanks for the website compliment but I can't claim any credit. It's entirely done by Groovy Lizard. I've been wanting to change over to a Word Press installation but my inability to make the CSS work correctly has stalled me and I've been too lazy of late to figure out exactly why it won't work as I want. I had hoped to throw a little money at Groovy Lizard, get them to do it, and then learn from their code what I was doing wrong.

The LJ designs were voted in back in early 1995. The winners then were 3 Column Style, A Novel Conundrum, Flexible Squares, Gradient Strip, Smooth Sailing, and Tranquility II --- I think. If you're curious, here's a link to a post that links to each style entered as well as screen shots. That's how I found Transmogrified. :)
[identity profile] riverfox.livejournal.com on August 7th, 2006 11:07 pm (UTC)
Ah. This explains why I never noticed Smooth Sailing before. It's what I'm using because it's one of four other designs that allow for a header graphic. I'd gone to the LJ Style page and noticed the dates. Figured it was late 2005. *g* Guess I just hadn't paid attention to the date. Time flies? *g*

I looked at the designs at Groovy Lizard and I liked a few of them. Yours was one of them. ;) I liked Persian Sun, too, but I didn't care for the font used for the header or the links. I'd replace them and use text instead, but only because I would've used the design for a fiction series only.*g* But the design doesn't really fit in with the rest of the plans for my overhaul of the fiction site so I'll think up something else.

In learning CSS, I've been driving myself nuts because the trial programs I had been using have timed out so now I'm trying to decide which one to buy in a month or so. What I'd like to do is buy Dreamweaver, but that's just a bit too much money. If I get a large cash award for my shoulder from L&I, then I may just be able to afford it. ;) I love Dreamweaver. It does it all for you... after you learn a few things, first. :-p

*snort* I can just imagine how the roomies were trying to figure out what they'd done. :)

Seriously, though, the destruction they're wreaking on Sam demoralizes me. I know this is a relatively new writer for the SG-1 'verse but...but...wait, there is no excuse. This guy is presumably a professional. The plotting was lame and he clearly has no knowledge of women or the military so he's just going to have to suck it up and accept that he screwed the pooch. If I were him, I'd change my name and slink off to a burger joint, where those talents (sic) would be better suited.

And they're going to do it again. In "Company of Thieves." I want revenge.

WTF?!?!? Thank you for that heads up. I will now scrub that episode from my "to be watched" list. Not even ogling the pretty men will make me willing to watch any further episodes in which Sam is replaced with a brain-free, spine-free clone. I'm just not willing to go there.
[identity profile] riverfox.livejournal.com on August 6th, 2006 07:25 pm (UTC)
(loves icon, inserts my version *g*)

I'm just not willing to go there.

I, er, um, ahem... have to watch because I'm a sad git who needs her eye candy. I'll just hope that when the time comes for Sam to give up the information when a gun is pointed at *Colonel Emerson's* head that he's at least in the same fucking room.
Mish: Janet -- Portrait[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com on August 6th, 2006 10:57 pm (UTC)
Oh! That is one of my all-time favorite Janet scenes! Normally it's her compassion that is her defining strength (i.e., her treatment of Apophis when he was dying) so her grabbing the gun and holding Nirrti at gunpoint to get Cassie healed was unexpected. Just an excellent, tension-filled scene.

I'll probably still TiVo it. After I see the gnashing of teeth, I'll probably watch with a thumb over the mute button. I'll mute when Sam comes on and fill in my own dialogue for why she agrees to whatever blackmail they've dreamt up for that week's humiliation.

Why? Because I am unreasonably interested in The Boys and I will want to see them. I understand your frustration with being unable to just walk away. I do. I think, perhaps, I qualify as a junky.
[identity profile] riverfox.livejournal.com on August 7th, 2006 04:23 am (UTC)
I qualify as a junky

You and me both, sister. You and me both. ;)

Just because I haven't said it, doesn't mean that I don't get great pleasure from your icon. I just noticed, though, the ring on the one man's finger. I'm overly sensitive these days about our hateful & exclusionary attitude towards gay marriage days so I love the way it quietly normalizes it in a pic where, I admit, the hot distracted me. Then again, I always love your icons.
[identity profile] riverfox.livejournal.com on August 7th, 2006 11:59 pm (UTC)
*loves you*

I was *so* mad when my legislature voted down the gay marriage bill. *So* mad. Oppression fucking bigots. Makes me ashamed to be living here.

The icon pic shows it's his right hand, not his left, so I pretend it's reversed. *gg* However, here's one for the correct hand. :)))
