Music Nominations!
My Better Half's Band, the Flying Fish Sailors, were nominated again for a Houston Press Award. This year, it is in the Best World Music Category. Yay!

Their second album, Remanant Stew, is out of print and thus available as a free download. It doesn't really sound a whole lot like the modern version of the band as this album hails from back in the days when they were but a trio but hey, it's still cool British Isles folk, a few American tunes, a couple of sea shanties, and some original pieces -- and free!

Absolutely! He works hard and I like to see him get recognized.

It's a very happy thing. I am hesitant to go back and look at the ballot because it takes registering to vote, which I find very annoying, but I didn't look beyond the world music category -- did the Lager Rhythms get a nod?

I voted, but it's such a strange exercise. Best World Music has so little overlap between the listener bases for D.R.U.M., FFS, and The Gypsies that it's hard to see what it means if someone wins or loses. They're just not competing for the same ears.

But hey, it's the Press. I can only support my friends by voting, even if the Press is generally horrible. Go Fish!

Awww, thank you! I haven't yet voted but I will be doing so soon.

As for the category, it's clearly a "and everything else" category. While it's often said when it isn't true, "the honor is in being nominated," is applicable here. Because the bands have entirely separate audiences, it'll have more to do with how large their listenership is and what percentage are in the Press readership. I don't expect the Fish to win - I think they've won only once - but I like seeing them get the nod and I know that Joe enjoys playing in the showcase they hold.
