Stargate Fan Survival Guide
So...the countdown begins. It's just about 24 hours before the premiere of Season 10 of Stargate SG-1. WOOT! If experience is any guide:

  • I expect to be blown away by the season premiere and to find some very interesting story arc possibilities raised in the first 3-4, maybe even 5, episodes.

  • I expect to be in a reinvigorated, "isn't the world sunny?" frame of mind.

  • I expect to pretty much hate what happens afterwards.

Sadly, the intersection between the writers' sphere of interest and mine is so small as to approach zero as the series goes to 10.

Once the salad days of optimism are done and I'm left looking at some fairly unappetizing brown lettuce, here are two relatively new places not everyone may know about yet where I'll be hanging out and chatting:

[livejournal.com profile] gate_crashers: A community dedicated to being a safe place to vent because we know the Stargate shows could be so much more than what often ends up onscreen these days. (OK, for me it's SG-1. I think SGA started crappy and continues crappy but I know there's much fandom love for it.)

So far, it has been a wonderful place to discuss annoyances but that has been balanced by positive topics. That's important for me because I cease having fun as a fan if it's all doom, all gloom, all the time. [livejournal.com profile] moonshayde and I have already agreed that, "Pretty!" is a good catchword for when your favorite actor's looks are the only saving grace in an episode choking on plot absurdities and character assassinations. Sometimes, the only thing keeping me tied to the fandom are the hot new costumes - as well as the occasional lack of a costume altogether. Hey, if they're not going to appeal to my think-y brain, at least they're willing to cater to my other brain. [livejournal.com profile] nialla42 has already made the first "Pretty!" icon and I'm hoping to add a few of my own to the efforts.

[livejournal.com profile] hecateshound: OK, yeah, a brutal tearing apart of my beloved show, SG-1, (Colonel Cupcake is forever etched in my brain) but it's done with such wit that I end up laughing throughout the post.

ETA: I meant to ask for suggestions of other places frequented by fans who love the show and who want it to be so much more than the sometimes disappointing results we get. I could always stand to add a new and witty joint to my f-list.

Should we collect all out "Pretty" together for usage? I haven't made any yet, but I guess I should get working on that.

I guess I am still holding onto the hope I wouldn't need my Pretty just yet.

Absolutely! I made a few very quick ones the night we first talked about it but I really liked [livejournal.com profile] nialla42's idea better so I attempted a couple of animated ones. There are clearly signs from Gods involved here because each attempt has ended in spontaneous closure of Photoshop causing loss of icon or my somehow managing to close the file without saving.

I have a couple in mind that I really, really want to make. If the gods of animation allow me. But I'd love to see what you come up with, too! I usually like other people's clever more than mine.

I'm hoping to not need them for the next several weeks. Actually, I'd love to be wrong and not need them at all. I am not, however, named Pollyanna so I expect to need a couple in reserve. :|

*g* Thanks for the shout-out. Aaand... you now know what I thought of 'Flesh and Boredom.'

Sigh. Not enough Daniel, either. And OMG, isn't he looking just a bit... blond?

You're most welcome. I don't have a huge presence in fandom but if I can steer anyone to you, all's the better. I can tell by your title change that you were unimpressed. Well, that and the fact that you have a functioning brain led me to suspect your opinion would be...negative. ;-) I haven't been able to read anything as my home internet has been down -- I'm having internet withdrawal shakes -- and I prefer to write up my own responses before reading others' so that I'm not influenced.

Love your icon! *g*

Sorry about your net, and hope it's fixed soon: there are a lot of lovely commentaries out here now on F&B, and I'm looking forward to seeing yours.

I seem to have picked up a few new readers for this season (interesting) or maybe people are just commenting more on my posts. Who can say?

*curtsies* Thank you, thank you. It so sums up both my disappointment in the season opener and also my frustration with the evil empire that is Time Warner in Houston.

And it does both so nicely....

I hardly think I'll have anything to add to the general discussion of what was wrong with the opener. To me, it seems a sad let down of the final expection for good I had for this show. I'm seriously pondering why it is I still watch because I need to find a way to enjoy it for whatever those reasons are and let go of the show I once loved. I thought I'd done so but I did expect something in the opener to make me think, "Cool plot development! Too bad they won't follow up on it." I just found myself checking my watch.

I'm glad that you're getting more comments because you damned well should.

Thanks!

I do find myself wondering what kind of fallout the destruction of Chulak will have on the rest of the Galaxy's political position, and especially that of the Jaffa. I kind of doubt the writers will think of that, and ever let us know, but I do wonder.
