Convertible Hair -- Of Weighty Matters
Long ago, in a galaxy far, far away, Mom gave me a makeover for my 16th birthday. Kismet gave me Jerry that day and he's been my stylist ever since. On that auspicious day, his first words to me were not, "Hello," or "What do you want from your hair?" No, they were, "How much can I cut off?"

While I might have been too broke in college to afford his services, as soon as I could I went running back to Jerry. Poor Jerry has suffered with me. I'm not wild and crazy - I've had essentially the same cut since I was 15. Sometimes chin-length; sometimes below my shoulders. When I wanted something different a few years ago, we switched from mousse to straightener. Woo hoo. The poor man has been bored.

It's no wonder that this was the first time he took me seriously when I said I was looking to cut it off. I've been babbling about it since September but he knows me better than to agree right away. He took me at my word this time and I haven't ever seen him so excited to cut my hair. He spent a lot of time fussing with the cut and the styling. Some of the tools he used remind me of dog grooming implements for stripping undercoats. I am well and truly shorn. OK - it's not Natalie Portman bald or Winona Ryder wisps; I don't have the making of a gamine in me...but for me, it's short.

It's convertible hair. Now I can truly enjoy the sensation of the wind in my face and in my hair without nasty hair snarls or eye lacerations. No more ponytails or hats. Oh, I also switched from blonde to red for real now but that's not nearly as exciting as a new cut. The real test will be whether I can make it look ok when it's my turn to style it -- and whether Joe can overcome his dislike of short hair.

I forgot that you think the world would be a better place if tomorrow every woman woke up with red hair. It's not really, really red; it isn't flaming red. I've been getting highlights in both red and blonde since I decided to not grow old gracefully. Used to be, I got lots more highlights in blonde and only a few in red. Now it's almost all red with a little blonde because my hair won't take the harsher checmicals long term. It looks brownish until I get in direct light which is when the red is obvious.

The important thing is that I don't have the same haircut I had in high school.

I have seen it!

It is RED.

Well, it's redder than it used to be. It's the same red dye that was in it before - there's just a preponderance of it instead of the blonde. *sniffle* I miss the blonde.

I should have known better. These won't be up for very long, I assure you. Hope you're still awake. I added a pic of the old 'do though I don't really have a recent pic that shows it off.

Sel likes your hair!!! :D so do I!

Helena, who isn't brave enough to do much with her hair. :)

Selmak! Long time no hear, m'dear. :) Thanks for the compliment. It's really a simple cut but I think I'll enjoy it. Especially with my admittedly limited patience to develop "brush skills" so I can "texture" my hair. :| Poor, poor Jerry. He earns his money on me.

It has taken me many, many years to let him do this so I know what you mean. This is despite my trusting him implicitly not to leave me looking too freaky, On the other hand, it's hair. It grows. If I end up hating it, it won't take too long to grow it back. I hope.

Sel!

You witty raconteur, you arbiter of style, you ogler of mature pulchritudinous manflesh...

What the hell do you know about hair? You have the hots for aging bald men! ;)

Jalabert,

once upon a time, when I was still alive, before TPTB killed me off to promote S/J ship, I used to have female hosts. So I admire a good hairstyle :) ~ Sel

That's too funny about your comment about Sel having the hots for aging bald men, as Sel just added a subsection to her site for Garry Chalk (Colonel Chekov) to which someone commented to her, "Doesn't he have more hair than the average Sel Boy Toy"

:P

Also thank you for the new word

pulchritudinous :)

It's sounds so more adult-symbiotish than "Hottie"

Poor Joe. He's got this thing for tall, leggy, and blonde. How the man ended up with me is a mystery but I'm awfully grateful for it.

Pretty! Makes you look much younger as well. Redheads are of course the best ;)

Jerry was talking about more youthful look, which I find humorous since it's the first real change since I was 15. I'd have thought the other was but I was obviously wrong.

very nice! Now Joe needs to start growing his...

Why does that sound so familar? *racks brain*

Congrats! Do you keep whipping your head from side to side -- when I cut my hair noticeably shorter, I do, just to feel the weird weightlessness and freedom.

Pictures?

(I somehow missed the deadline, I'm guessing - I'm forbidden to look at the link. :( )

I didn't meant to leave you out, hun. I've reopened the pics. They're in my Scrapbook and are f-locked.

I do keep moving my head with a little too much force. The funniest thing is me trying to figure out how much - or, more accurately, how little - shampoo to use.

I posted the link down below for you. I'd changed the permissions to nobody since I'd figured anyone who was going to look already had but I've now changed them back. Alas, my blow drying skills leave much to be desired so it's no longer quite so ruly.
[identity profile] nicoleallee.livejournal.com on April 18th, 2006 07:25 pm (UTC)
It looks great! I'm glad you like it. I need to get mine cut again (the weirdest thing about going back to shorter hair). It's long enough that I've shoved it up into a french twist today.
Mish: Beatles: Desmond Does His Pretty Face[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com on April 19th, 2006 02:20 pm (UTC)
Thanks. :) I'm enjoying the fact that I accidentally timed this cut perfectly for the first days of 90+ degree weather. Ewwwww.

The most surprising thing about having short hair is the lack of momentum in my hair. It tracks the movement of my head and that is just weird. It feels as if I have helmet hair but without all the petrochemical goodies to freeze it in place. I miss being able to do something with it if I was having a bad hair day but then again, my hair manip skills never made it "french twist" sophistication. I got to "ponytail and clips" but that's about it.
