GAH! Computer Virus!
My computer caught a virus (or a trojan horse or a worm -- haven't yet determined) last night when I went to the Heliopolis archive. Stupid, stupid, stupid. I knew that someone was targeting one of the QaF archives but I never thought about this thing targeting other archives as well. Dumb, dumb, dumb.

I immediately went to Zone Alarm and shut down all internet activity, the computer froze, and I hard rebooted while running to the other room to shut off the modem.

The damage was done, though, because now neither the keyboard nor the mouse work with the CPU. I'm assuming the drivers have been messed with - but I only know how to boot into safe mode from the keyboard. Luckily, we have two computers so I'll be spending this morning verifying what bug I probably have and trying to figure out what I can do about it. Grrrrrrr. In all my years online, this is the 1st one I've gotten and I am kicking myself for not being more suspicious.

ETA: If anyone has suggestions or knowledge, please feel free to share. I'm at a loss on how to even log into windows without a keyboard or mouse. Thanks!

Crap. I was there last night too. I knew it had been targeted over Thanksgiving break and the webmistress had gone to great pains to fix it.

it's happening again?

Crap crap.

Did your problem start right away?

Yes, it happened right away. Maybe I was just unlucky in timing? And I'd been so certain to patch and update after the scare in the QaF world. Just to be certain, a scan wouldn't go amiss but it happened as soon as I pulled up the search screen.

That sucks. I scanned, but I didn't find anything but that doesn't necessarily mean anything.

It's really low to be spreading viruses, worms, trojans, whatever this way. Any way really, but still. I hope that you're able to fix it.

Can't you boot in the safety mode if you utilize a boot disc? Or won't your keyboard/mouse work even with that?

I've managed to get it booted now (gods, what a day) and Norton AV has spent the last 3 hours scanning every single file on my 3 hard drives. Thus far, nothing found, but it's maybe half way through my files. *fingers crossed* After it finishes, I'll submit it to kaspersky for scanning since it found some files missed by NAV in the QaF infections.

Tell ya what, though - I'm giving up on trying to find a particular Daniel/Sha'ure story to include in my AU recs. I wanted to post something other than just slash in the AUs but it's not worth it.
