Election Day
Don't forget to vote today. The local League of Women Voters has a Houston guide, especially good for a crash course on the amendments up for a vote.

I'm more optimistic about the possibility of defeating Prop. 2 than I have any right to be. I live in a slightly Repug-leaning area with a lot of retirees but I've been impressed by the number of yard signs against it - and the utter lack of any for it.

Wouldn't that be a lovely coup? For Texas to be the first state to reject adding hate to our state constitution?

Yeah, but even still, she's pretty down. She knows that no matter how hard she's worked on this election (she volunteers for a GLBT task force), she knows her rights are about to be severely curtailed because the likelihood of this amendment passing is pretty good.

Ouch - not the best memory for one's first election. I'd say welcome to political life in Texas but there's never a good time to learn this sort of reality. There are days I'm so angry I could spit and there are others that I think Vancouver just seems like the only rational option. Hugs to your family.
