SG-1 10.12: Line in the Sand

This is more of an insta-reaction than a thoughtful response

Watching the warriors massacre crouching villagers was particularly painful given the events of this week. I was surprised by the severity of the gut-punch that delivered. I mean, I know that nobody died and it was just flashes from off screen but I was quite the strength of my reaction was unexpected. I wish we'd seen this back when the Brits did rather than now. :(

Stupid premise -- how in the world did they think that the Ori wouldn't notice the missing village? So, assuming I can get past that idiocy, I think the episode was reasonably good. I was glad for once to see a grievously injured character actually suffer. I know that sounds weird but I'm tired of seeing the equivalent of the Monty Python Flesh Wound still fighting. It gave Amanda a cool part to play and it gave us a lot of really nice character beats between Sam and Cam.

I just hope Sam doesn't fall for Cam because he's Teal'c's man and I'd hate to see her lose the colonel again like she did Jack to Daniel. ;-)

I got thrown out of it by her password of all things. Aside from the stupid shippy implications, it's an incredibly stupid password.

On the other hand, it does explain why everyone and his weasel can gate in and then use their dialing computer. Ms. Computer Genius apparently doesn't understand the concept of strong passwords.

Yes, another shout-out to the S/J crowd but in my living room, I distinctly heard her password as "fizzing." ;-)

Her password on those files should be easy, no? Those were her letters to family and friends and she means for people to see them. In reality, those should be printed and in an envelope somewhere but I let it slide because the first person she named? Cassie. Shippers can claim it was the morphine and I can claim the Relationship of Doom is, well, over.

The sense of computers on this show is frighteningly bad. This worked back in the day when nobody had them but the audience today is far more familiar with them.

The idea that they can interface a Dell laptop into anything Ancient is, well, wait...do you think these guys write using Macs? Because those really are Plug and Play. Maybe they've never actually tried to get Windows to see its own, built-in CD Drive much less had to look for an updated driver?

I like the audio on your tv better.

And yes, her letters should be in envelopes in the HR files or the General's files. As for the password, this is CARTER! She probably has two dozen passwords at LEAST and I bet everyone of them is randomly generated and memorized.

We had to pay extra for that audio but it has been worth it.

So true! It would be easier to believe these characters if the writers had a better understanding of characterization. *sigh* It frustrates me when they botch really obvious things.

Just once I'd like to see a show like this have a person on staff who's ONLY job is to watch out for this sort of thing.

Oh, *and* have that individual be actually, y'know, *competent*.

I think that would be too much. How could a show survive if all the geeky fans were passed out from the shock and couldn't press their Nielson (sp?) box remote buttons?

Man, I wish I had one of those boxes. ;-)

And yeah, I think you've pegged it here... they probably *do* use Macs.

Maybe the writers are a little smarter than we've been giving them credit for. ;-)

I'm sorry -- I can't credit those guys with that much intelligence. I think it's more ignorance because Macs are the only ones so easy that even they can use them.

Oh, absolutely! This was one of the high points for me, sick as it sounds. SG1 frequently gets off far too lightly and I was also delighted that it was Sam who was in peril. Definately NOT from the whole "Damsel in Distres" mode, but simply from the perspective that writer-wise, I think it's a lot harder to torment a female character than a male one. But nothing else would have worked in this ep, so I'm glad that they went with it.

Sam's pain, both emotional and physical, was palpable, as was Cam's deterimation that she wouldn't die.

I can handwave most of the techy stuff, I'm pretty much here for the drama :)

The lack of consequences on this show is a real problem so I was glad to see some come out of the sort of injury that we usually see them grit their teeth and soldier through. I think this way of doing it makes her stronger because we see her struggling to do what she can despite the injuries. I also really liked her awareness that the machine, the project, and the war were the most important. She was willing to die there rather than have Cam do one of his heroic, stupid, solo moves.

I think that both Ben Browder and Amanda Tapping have a lot to be proud of in that scene.

One little village - are you telling me that the ENTIRE planet just has one little village. that's the entire population?

Absolutely. The writers are amazingly lazy when it comes to creating alien planets/people/etc. I wish they'd sat down a long time ago and made up a cheat sheet for believable planet building but, alas, they didn't.

Even a throw away line like, "The goa'uld already killed off most of us. I won't stand by while you let the Ori kill the few who remain!" or some equally overdramatic statement would have been nice. If that's the entire population of the planet? They're already doomed due to genetic bottlenecking.

Well, based on over a decade of EMT volunteering, my sister and I both thought Amanda looked too darn good for that type of injury. But you know, there has to be some people in every crowd.

I did like the macaroon scene at the end. That was good!Teamy!goodness. Though the "Keep your hands inside the village" speech at the beginning was painful. Painful!

BTW - did you see the latest addition to the Secaucus Creation Con? We're getting Don.

Yeah, he ain't hot. Yeah, he's balding... but give me an actor that luvs!Fans like him or Teryl and I'll be happy.

I was going to mention that Sam was a tough -- but always pretty -- injury victim but I forgot to. I think they should have at the very least given an ashen makeup job. Maybe the Ori weapon cauterized the wound so she wasn't suffering massive internal bleeding? Maybe Cam is actually a brilliant field surgeon masquerading as flyboy? *grin*

I liked the cookie scene, too, though I wish Teal'c had been there. The "Keep Your Hands" crap gave me Stupid!Jack flashbacks. I felt it was supposed to make me think of Jack, which it did, but not in the good way they hoped. It was stupid and pointless and Cam is NOT Jack. Although, that line would have been completely in character for Crighton -- and would have worked there.

I did see the addition of Don! I was thinking of posting a list of announced guests and likelihood they'll actually show. "Michael Shanks - 5%; Don Davis - 95%" and so on. ;)

In order to enjoy the show, I often have to overlook the things that don't make sense or are obvious nods to the S/J shippers. Although, "fishing?" Puhlease! A genius like Sam using a password like that that! Ridiculous.

I enjoy the Sam/Cam moments. I think that they are treating the relationship as a type of sibling relationship. That is pretty much what I see in their interactions. I seriously hope that doesn't change because it would just be so wrong.

And, not that I enjoyed seeing Sam suffer, but I agree that with the peril they are always, in, they get off easy and it seemed appropriate that someone get seriously hurt for a change.

I was happy to see some doubts instilled in Tomin. I wonder if there will be any future episodes having to do with that story line or if it will end up in Never Never Land like so many other plot lines.

Umm... I could tell you, but then... well, you'd be spoiled.:-)

*laughs* Thanks, I'll wait. I'll hang on to what little I don't already know. So much has been spoiled already that a few unknowns will be good. :)

I've remained remarkably spoiler-free. I credit that to limiting my SG-1 fandom to LJ and to my f-list's thoughtful placement of spoilers behind cuts. I wouldn't say I'm a spoiler-phobe but I have found I enjoy the show more if I haven't already read the debate on the episode before I've seen it. :)

I don't ever want to see them write a particular ship, honestly. First off, it messes up somebody else's fun and second off, they totally suck at writing relationships. Leave it as subtext or up to the actors to put in. Everybody gets to play with subtext, nobody gets pitted against others, and those who don't want romance at all can also be happy. :)

I thought Tomin's change was a little too sudden -- and I still don't understand how he isn't a burnt cinder after confronting the prior that way. I'm glad to see the character's conversion but the Short Attention Span Theater given to us by the writers mean that things we should see happening in a number of scenes spread out over several episodes gets all mushed up into one 20 minute part of a single episode. I'd be cheering so much more if I still had the emotional investment in Tomin that I did back when I first met him.

However, yeah, it would be nice to see him continue to develop. I imagine they plan to use him in the defeat of the Ori because now we have two agents in the enemy camp, even if one of them is a True Believer.

Um... did y'all happen to catch the idiocy in the previews? It's also in the ads currently running for next week.

I don't think they pay poor Amanda NEARLY enough to do that job!

As someone else said, apparently TPTB can't tell the difference between the character and the actor any more.

And they complain about FANS not having a solid grasp on reality.

Loathe as I am to give the writers any credit, if they referred to her as Amanda in a preview, that's a SciFi screw up.

Which seems even weirder to me. Carter consistently rates fairly low in terms of being a fan favorite. I really don't give Atlantis much hope for a fifth season if they're betting the franchise on her.
