Ur

On today's calendar?

Visiting the Royal Tombs of Ur at the Museum of Natural Science. Yay! [livejournal.com profile] jalabert knows how much this thrills my soul -- and is probably grateful that she isn't part of this trip.

Sadly, no photos allowed so there will be no pics to add to my collection of photos of Sumerian and Assyrian art at the Met. Joe will earn his sainthood, I'm sure. He's so wonderfully patient with my glacial-melt pace when in exhibits.

ETA: Hope the little prim'ta's vet appointment went well today, [livejournal.com profile] jalabert!

We definitely need to drag you to the Brooklyn Museum, which also has an Assyrian collection, many pieces from the same collection that went to the Met...

Drag away! I've earmarked 3 days of vacation time to be added to one of my NJ trips for just that purpose. :)

I don't know if I'll be using them in September when Joe and I are there for the wedding or if it'll be on my return in November. Joe's schedule will determine whether we have extra time up there. I soooo want to take him to NYC; he's never been!

I answered too fast because I'm rushing around to get out of here, but I just realized what you said. The Brooklyn museum ALSO has Assyrian stuff? I thought their claim to fame was just the superb Egyptian collection. I'm going to get both? 3 days might not be enough. Damn.

Egypt Through Other Eyes: The Popularization of Ancient Egypt Aug 12-Nov 12
Egypt Reborn Permanent Exhibit
Assyrian Reliefs Permanent Exhibit (they have other reliefs from this set @ the MET)...
In 1937, the Society lent them to the Brooklyn Museum and in 1955, Hagop Kevorkian, the New York collector and dealer, donated the funds to purchase and install the reliefs in the renamed Hagop Kevorkian Gallery of Ancient Middle Eastern Art at the Brooklyn Museum.

Other objects in the Brooklyn Museum's Ancient Near Eastern collection include works made by the Sumerians, Assyrians, Achaemenid Persians, Sabeans, and others.

Also Brooklyn has a number of Rodin sculptures from the Cantor collection, most of which was destroyed.

*whimper* I wanna go NOW and see these. Especially the Assyrian reliefs. They're just so fascinating. One of these days I have to sit down and teach myself a bit of the language.

number of Rodin sculptures

What is it with you and this modern art stuff?!? ;-)

I've been saying that for ages! Next time she comes north we will all head for Brooklyn. If she comes in September was might wander into the Botanical Garden next door.

...And when we have lunch I'm poisoning her cocoa. ;)

That's a bum rap! I love going through museums with you, listening to you unleash your inner Daniel!

Who listens to you? *ducks*

...Botanical Garden next door.

Ooooo...that sounds lovely. *whimper* I wanna visit NOW. I don't wanna wait. NOTE TO SELF: Avoid cocoa during trip. ;-)

Hee! It is and you're the other saint who indulges my passion for archaeological exhibits. There's a reason that Daniel is my favorite character, all right, and it isn't due solely to Mr. Shanks's hotitudinosity. I think you'll understand how disappointing today's exhibition was when I say that I worked hard to prolong it, to eke out every bit of info I could, and we were in and out in under 90 minutes. :|

Thanks! I did. The exhibit felt a lot like the curator's first solo attempt so even though they had artifacts from a civilization that was ancient when the Pyramids were built, there wasn't a lot done to make it interesting.

That said? The Sumerians were consummate metal smiths. The personal effects were a stunning collection of precious metals, lapis, carnelian, and shell while the yard-long, gold beer straws were highly amusing.
