Making Vacation Plans for the Year

  • Alaska. Maybe July/August but I'd really prefer to go after school is back in session in early September. That's what we did last time and it was like having the whole state to ourselves. I'm already dreaming of the Cream of Wild Mushroom Soup with Black Truffle Oil that we had last time at the Crow's Nest at the Captain Cook Hotel. Seriously - the best meal I ever ate in my life. Hope they still have the same chef. I desperately want to tack on a stop over, even if it's a couple of days, in Vancouver because I just hate to go 2 years without seeing British Columbia.

  • New Jersey, Western. Mid-September for a friend's wedding. Thankfully, the man has the excellent sense to live in charming western NJ.

  • New Jersey, Eastern. November. Supreme irony of my life that I'll be venturing into New Jersey twice in one year. I may not make it to B.C. but I'll be in NJ twice?!? Obviously the only reason I'm venturing into eastern NJ now that [livejournal.com profile] immlass and [livejournal.com profile] mcroft have moved is because pretty, pretty men will be at the Stargate Convention. I already have tickets and they're front row center. So...no way I'm missing that one. I may not be sticking around for the week afterwards, though, as I have in the past -- which really stinks because a 2 day visit to the Met has become a yearly pleasure and I was hoping to make it to the Brooklyn Museum's Egyptian Collection.

We've half-seriously considered the 8 hour plane ride each way as worth it to eat that soup.

We'd love to see you and have a guest room here if you need a place to stay.

Also, consider Philadelphia airport as well as Newark for flights to Western NJ. For our trip to H-town, we found it was hundreds of dollars cheaper. YMMV.

Second the welcome wagon to Western NJ.

We have other mutual friends in NYC. You might want to mention that you're coming up to that area and see if anybody bites.

Beyond [livejournal.com profile] la_directora? I don't yet know precisely what my plans will be. I've already committed, at the very least, to a lunch with [livejournal.com profile] jalabert on at least one of the NJ trips. 'Course, I assume she and her sister will be rooming with me again for the Con but those things are social whirlwinds. You don't get lots of quiet visiting time.

I am so excited that I'll get to see y'all in February, Ken in a couple of weeks, and then I'll have more opportunities to see all y'all again in less than a year's time. *sniffle* It's almost as if y'all haven't moved up to Yankee land. ;-)

Oh - I'd like that. Any reason to avoid the Newark airport is welcome to me. Now I have visions of trying to add in a side trip to Philadelphia since I abandoned that plan last time. Lots of good history there and think of all the cemeteries! Hmmmm...

Thank you for the offer of a place to stay. I'll probably take you up on it again. I'm not planning anything for the wedding until we firm up the date for Alaska. I may do something insane like fly there from Alaska if I can talk Joe into September.

[identity profile] moonshayde.livejournal.com 2006-01-05 01:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm going to NJ for that Con too! Nice tickets, how lucky of you. I had front row center at the Boston con this past summer, but they didn't come back to Boston this year so...I don't have as greay a seat this year ;)

I'm sure it'll be fun.

Yay! Then I'll get to meet you in person. I will have a bazillion friends at the con - and that really is the best part of the experience. Gods, you'd never know that I'm introverted and shy in real life.

I'm very lucky on the tickets and it's mostly due to my very sweet friend, Mick. I wanted to go to the Boston show last year because I haven't been to Boston in forever but it just didn't work out. From what I heard of the facilities, I should be grateful for that.

[identity profile] moonshayde.livejournal.com 2006-01-05 04:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm a pretty easy person and the accomodations didn't bother me much. The hotel itself wasn't that bad--my roommate and I had no problems whatsoever. But Don Davis had a really bad experience and I think that just set the tone for the whole con after that.

The convention center itself was bad, though. It wasn't a pretty place. It affected people more than it affected me, but there was some nastiness. When MS comes in and asks what that funky smell is...(I have liek no sense of smell.)

It was a shame though because the experience itself was wonderful. It was a small con, so we had more time with the stars. The people that went, for the most part, weren't the rabid scary types. There was a family atmosphere and the stars were great with the kids.

I really appreciated that since my first con, at NJ, wasn't the best experience that I had had. I hope this coming year will be as fun as my Boston experience.

I wouldn't call myself shy anymore, but I am introverted. I know a lot of people going myself, but I don't know them really well. I'm hoping that I'll get to meet some nice people. for me, the con isn't as fun if you're hanging out with psychos ;)

I'll be in row D. Boo. But I was in the front rwo the other 2 times, I guess it's time to let someone enjoy the sights.

From what I heard, having no sense of smell was a definite boon. As I recall, [livejournal.com profile] triciabyrne1978 described it as smelling like an uncleaned public restroom.

Mmmmm...I may be a scary rabid type by your definition though I recommend Gatecon if you think you've met the scary rabid fan. Compared to them, I'm sane. Really. I'm trying not to get my hopes up because I know schedules are subject to change but I'm quite happy at the prospect of "meeting" Cliff Simon. I haven't seen him before and fresh blood is always appreciated. Having said that, I'm hoping that they'll get Teryl for this con. I love that woman and she never gets old. :)

I'm assuming that I've mellowed quite a bit seeing as how I met several Jack and Sam fans this last time and...I actually like them! I thought they all had horns, wore wedding dresses with signs proclaiming they were "Bride Sams" looking for Jack, and were otherwise weird. Who knew they were wonderful, intelligent, and had good taste outside of that tiny little pairing lapse. ;-)

Last year's NJ con was excellent even though a couple of the freaks showed up again. Peter Williams spent hours camped out with us on the sofas and talked about all sorts of things. Don let us know when he'd be having breakfast so we could all go and celebrate his birthday. Yeah, I still want to gawk at MS but I find the greatest pleasure comes from the more quiet moments.

[identity profile] moonshayde.livejournal.com 2006-01-05 06:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Ew. *thanks nose*

Well, you know it takes a certain kind of people to go to these things, myself included. But I go because I want to hear the panels, I like the show, and I want to talk to people who like the show. I want to have lots of geeky fun, stuff I can't do as my normal alter ego.

And the Jack and Sam fans don't bother me and I simply loathe that character pairing. It's actually some of the fans for a particular character that I love that scare me.

I am excited to meet Cliff. I've realized that all the people that I've ever not really had an interest in ended up being very cool, so now I just excited to meet everyone. They all have their own surprises.

I want Teryl. I missed in at the last NJ con I went to (was in line to have photo taken with MS) and she didn't go to Boston.

Wow sounds like you had fun with Peter Williams! Guh! He was so sweet and doesn't look as old as the math says he should be. Wow. That sounds fantastic.

In Boston, I rode the elevator with Tony Amendola. Sweetest man ever. We chatted about New England (he's visits the Cape a lot) and then later at the dessert party we had a nice chat about archaeology and anthropology. Fun!

Unfortunately, I tend to turn to goo around MS. *sigh* For once, I'd like to act like a normal person.

Whatever could you mean? ;-) I wasn't so fond of the bizarre and vocal Jack/Sam fans at Gatecon but I imagine some of the unmentioned character's fans were equally obnoxious. Mostly, I made those comments to needle [livejournal.com profile] majorsamfan and [livejournal.com profile] triciabyrne1978, my S/J buds. :)

I've realized that all the people that I've ever not really had an interest in ended up being very cool, so now I just excited to meet everyone. They all have their own surprises.

Absolutely. It may be the big three who sell the tickets - and yes, it's fun to see them - but I've found every single person from the Stargate cast/crew whom I've "met" to be very nice people and each has added to the con experience.

Teryl, Don, and Peter have always impressed me by generously giving of themselves and making a concerted effort to connect with the con-goers. I'm sure whatever happens I'll have fun. Even if every guest turned out to be a dud, the friends I've made would be fun to hang with and drown our sorrows.

MS always turns my brain to mush, too. I have to have other people around to talk for me. I'm such a dweeb.

*sigh* I know. This was Joe's year to pick the big trip and I was hoping he'd consider the UK...he got close: AK. He loved Alaska as much as I did so I'm not surprised we're going back. (Read my comment above about the soup alone being worth the trip...)

Weather canceled two of our most anticipated AK activities - glacier hiking and touring Prince William Sound - last time. I know he's been chomping at the bit to do those and he has been very patient while we did stuff I wanted to do (Vancouver, Egyptian exhibit in Victoria, Gatecon). By all rights, we should have gone back to Alaska last year but that got sidelined by my grandmother's deteriorating health and death.

I think 2007 is more likely for the U.K. I'd hoped for a stronger dollar so we could do more but I'd like to get there before you get your PhD.

Silly Joe! Scotland is best. Of course, you can come whenever you want, because even after I get my Ph.D. I will be staying there, but you should come soon. Go win the lottery and be a woman of leisure!

Oh - I'm quite aware that you intend to stay over there with boys in kilts. I meant that more in terms of wanting to visit in less time than it takes you to get your doctorate. After all, I met you when you were still a snot-nosed undergrad.

I'd love to win the lottery. That presupposes I remember to play the lottery and, alas, that's a false supposition.

*g* I've been on the prowl for icons from the 1995 version of P&P. At work, I keep a pic from the scene of Darcy looking at Elizabeth at the Pemberley piano... *sigh* True, gooshey romance.

Yay! I'd love to meet you. Just a warning -- our plans are not yet fixed and may not be for a month or so. We're bringing Joe's father and stepmother with us so my schedule will be less my own than usual. We've just talked and we're likely to return to Aleyeska for at least part of this trip. We both fell in love with Girdwood and Aleyeska - and there's little on Earth to rival the beauty of the Kenai Peninsula. But why am I telling you? You undoubtedly know.

I know your schedule is packed, as well, so I'll try to keep you updated as we make decisions. I'm pushing for flying out the last week of August and returning either Sept. 10 or 11. This will almost assuredly change, though, because I'm only one of four...but that's the general schedule I'm pushing for.

Fortunately, the ash blew the other direction, and we should be good unless it spews some more and the wind changes. Thanks for asking. I can see Mt. Augustine from my house, and it's amazing. Sherrie
