Is anyone interested in a LIMS contest for SG-1?

ETA: [livejournal.com profile] sg1_lims -- We now have enough votes to say that yes, we'll be having a LIMS!! If you wish to participate and haven't answered the poll, please fill out the poll so that I know to track you down and let you know when we're ready to open the community. We're collecting caps, organizing themes, and setting up the community right now!

~~**~~

Is there interest among icon makers for a LIMS contest for SG-1? [livejournal.com profile] lantis_lims is a well-run community and I enjoyed participating; I'd really like to see something like it for SG-1.

I used to think LIMS was ego-destroying with its eliminations and reasons for voting, but I found that knowing I'd get feedback spurred me to try new techniques and take risks. It was immensely helpful to me as an icon maker to receive comments, both positive *and* critical.

I've wished there were a similar community for SG-1 for a while. So, is there interest? I'd be willing to mod but I'd like to have either co-mods or, as the lantis_lims has, a bunch of volunteers to help. And, of course, I would like to have participants!

[Poll #1165719]

I'm sure there are lots of things I don't know about running a comm such as this; I've never done it. If you have any helpful suggestions or ideas, I'd love to hear them.

Also? Please pimp this poll. I would like to reach the widest range of SG-1 fans possible. Thank you. :)

Awww, thank you! I really appreciate the support -- and there are lots of ways to support the idea without making icons or being a mod.

One of the least time-consuming ways is as a voter -- and LIMS absolutely must have voters. Everyone has an opinion on what she does and doesn't like. Articulate people, that would be you, can explain *why* they do or don't like a particular icon. No specialist knowledge necessary. One of the reasons I enjoyed participating was that as a voter I got to finally tell makers things like, "The crop is too far away and I can't tell who the subject is!" or other forms of constructive feedback that I hoped would result in icons more like the kind I like.

LIMS stands for "Last Icon Maker Standing." It has a pool of entrants who submit an icon on a regular basis using caps provided by the moderator. Members vote on the icons they feel have the best technical merit and the least technical merit. (That is, you don't vote for the Daniel icon because it's Daniel but you might because the coloring is fabulous.)

Each time, the votes are tallied and someone is eliminated for having made the icon judged to have the least technical merit. All the participants can request their comments (publicly or screened for privacy) so they can improve. Those not eliminated go on to the next round and so on until there's only one maker left.

like a spelling bee... hee. i can see how it would be unnerving. like a poetry slam, for my area....

well, in any case, i can certainly commit to voting. that's about it!

I found it forced me to work outside my comfort zone and try new things. Unnerving to some extent - nobody wants to be voted off - but the feedback was exactly what I'd been craving.

Voting is important. It's the *point* of LIMS. :)
