Bragging Rights

The Better Half has a band, the Flying Fish Sailors, and they recently won the Houston Press 2007 Award for "Best Pirate Band." I don't know how much competition there is for the award, and I kind of suspect that someone made up the category in order to give the guys an award but hey, who's complaining? An accolade is an accolade. They've collected many honors in their two decades as a band but another one is always welcome.

On a related note, band member [livejournal.com profile] mrkamikaze has vintage, out of print, live recordings of blast from the past events: 1995's Blarney Fest and 1996's Son of Blarney Fest -- they're available for FREE download. Thank you, [livejournal.com profile] mcroft, for making these rare recordings available! As always, the in-print Flying Fish Sailors catalog is available from Amazon. :)

Too bad The Man is in Canada and doesn't yet know. :) I can hardly wait to tell him tonight. Not that Houston is overflowing with "Pirate Bands" (or, for that matter, that the Flying Fish Sailors are a pirate band) but it was still nice of what is undoubtedly a fan at the paper to make up an award for them. :)

Hey, maybe they'll make it a regular thing so they can win every year. ;-)

The downloads are live performances and were multi-band events. Hope they entertain you. :)

You know, I was gonna get all congratulatory when I read that on the FlyingFishFeed yesterday, but then I had posts telling me to be sure to come to the upcoming St. Patrick's Day Bash, so I got confused and thought maybe the Fish had gotten this award earlier in the year.

So, is the above sentence compound-complex, or just a run-on?

To the best of my knowledge, the Houston Press Award is current. Jay's announcement is dated 26th Sept and it's a 2007 award. The article itself is undated (annoying, that) but it was news to me. (That doesn't necessarily mean anything. I'm very swiss cheese brained these days.)

I vote for compound-complex because it didn't make me want to pant for breath or spork my eyes out. It read fine to me! (I think we've become used to punchier sentences and shorter paragraphs due to the digital medium than when we were primarily paper-based.)

Do you know how [livejournal.com profile] mrkamikaze found those rare recordings?

They're my rips from CD and cassette.

Glad to get them into circulation.

I didn't know that. I assumed he'd gotten them from his own recordings or from our copies. However, I'm all about giving credit where it's due so I'll alter the above to include that nugget. :)

I need to send you an e-mail -- don't get me started on my ongoing headaches with getting my laptop to synch with the new Comcast outgoing mail server -- about travelling to your domicile in just over a month.

Not worried about credit, just interesting.

Saw Clandestine last night in Bethlehem, PA. Talked with EJ and Gregroy. They talked about all the old CDs they had (and which ones were out of print). After the show, I mentioned that they'd skipped one very early recording. EJ still has a shrinkwrapped copy.

Too late. The credit is already added. ;) I appreciate your finding them and making them available because now I have some more free stuff to tempt people with when I try to convince them to give the band a try. :)

Hope they're all well. Just last week Joe and I were talking about the reconstituted Clandestine while walking Brinkley. Is Al touring with them?
