NY/NJ Travel plans

Oct. 26 - Nov. 5: TEN DAYS!!! Woot!

I've bought my tickets and made my hotel reservations. Details are:

Fr Oct 26: Arrive Newark a little before noon. Drive to Maryland with [livejournal.com profile] jalabert.
Sa Oct 27: Museum in Baltimore with [livejournal.com profile] jalabert. http://digital.mica.edu/exhibition/
Su Oct 28: SMITHSONIAN in D.C.!!!!!! Drive to [livejournal.com profile] yams69's hacienda. Visit the new wee lass.
Mo Oct 29: Trip to the Mutter museum in Philly with [livejournal.com profile] yams69, M, and [livejournal.com profile] jalabert.
Tu Oct 30: Stay in Lawrenceville with [livejournal.com profile] mcroft and [livejournal.com profile] immlass
We Oct 31: Check into con hotel. Halloween parade in Manhattan, possibly with [livejournal.com profile] la_directora
Th Nov. 1: Visit the new Greek/Roman galleries at the Met with [livejournal.com profile] la_directora. Maybe go to the Cloisters first, though it's a loooong haul by bus. :|
Fr Nov. 2: Con starts. Tony Amendola and STEVE BACIC. Yum!
Sa Nov. 3: DON DAVIS, Paul McGillon, and Jay Acovone.
Su Nov. 4: MICHAEL SHANKS, CLIFF SIMON, and Kate Hewlett. Play in NYC with [livejournal.com profile] selmak, [livejournal.com profile] janiekins, & [livejournal.com profile] triciabyrne1978?
Mo Nov. 5: Fly home and collapse.

I'll have to dig out my Don Davis paraphernalia from [livejournal.com profile] selmak and send off my camera for cleaning/service toot-sweet.

My plane tickets cost me $5 since I cashed in a wad of frequent flyer miles. Quite the savings over the nearly $400 it was going to cost otherwise. :)

[identity profile] la-directora.livejournal.com 2007-09-21 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, my god, you frickin' ROCK. When I clicked the link to see the details, I held my breath..."Please let her be available the two days I'm available while she's here...please let her be available the two days I'm available while she's here..." (I return from Chicago Tuesday, October 30th, and fly out to Austin Friday, November 2nd.) And you picked THOSE EXACT TWO DAYS to be in NYC!!! You rock!!!

And, yeah, that means I may just have to brave going to the Halloween parade with you. Either way, I'm with ya on Thursday for the museum stuff. :)
ext_1645: (C&H -- Yay!)

[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com 2007-09-21 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
YAY! How the hell did we manage that? I thought for sure we were going to do the "ships that pass int he night" thing. :|

Very cool. I'd love the company at the Halloween parade, though I completely understand if you'd rather celebrate Samhain. If I'm going to have company, I might be convinced to peel myself out of bed early the next morning so that we can hit the Cloisters and then make the endless bus trip from Hell to the Met to ogle at the galleries. :) I wonder how far along they are with the new Egyptian galleries. If those are ready, I'd be hard pressed to choose what to do.

[identity profile] la-directora.livejournal.com 2007-09-21 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
By the by, what is this horrible bus ride from the Cloisters to the Met of which you speak? It's so easy...A train to one of the cross town busses near the Met. 30 minutes tops? Stick with me, kid, and we'll get you around town better. :)
ext_1645: (Default)

[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com 2007-09-21 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh? I wonder why [livejournal.com profile] jalabert, [livejournal.com profile] mcroft, and [livejournal.com profile] immlass, and I took the endless, endless bus ride? I probably made noises about wanting to see some of Manhattan between the Cloisters and the Met. If that's reason, they deserve angel wings for agreeing to my screwball plan. 30 minutes beats the snot out of a 1.5 or 2 hour bus ride. :|

[identity profile] selmak.livejournal.com 2007-09-21 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
West point? That's up my way! :P

[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com 2007-09-21 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I have my maps at home so I haven't yet looked at the distances to see whether it's realistic but I have a friend from college who is a professor there and he offered a tour if I were ever in the area. Little did he know that I was planning a trip so soon! ;)

If it is feasible, maybe we could get together for dinner? I have to pick my destination soon-ish and make my hotel reservations. I like to plan it out ahead of time and pre-pay for the rooms because that saves a lot of money.

[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com 2007-09-21 07:45 pm (UTC)(link)
BTW, have you looked at the Creation website lately? Apparently, this is the last year for the NY/NJ con. :(

[identity profile] selmak.livejournal.com 2007-09-21 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
they're moving it out of that STINKIN' hotel is all. They've sworn that they're NOT giving up the area.

*looks horrified*

Who is the Pointer Professor? I had one for my one of my classes, he slummed at that non-point colleges to make money. :P

Speaking of bad hotels... when are you arriving? A group of us might do the Kate Hewlett play as it's rather inexpensive.... and that way the con doesn't end quite as soon.

[identity profile] selmak.livejournal.com 2007-09-21 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I see you updated the schedule while I was posting. :) Janet and I will be there on that Thursday, god willin'.

ext_1645: (Teal'c / Cam -- Hug)

[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com 2007-09-21 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
If it's just the hotel they're leaving, then I'm a happy girl. That hotel sucks. But the wording on the website sounds more permanent:

THE LAST VISIT OF THE STARGATE CONVENTION TOUR TO SECAUCUS/NEW YORK CITY AREA: COME JOIN THE CELEBRATION AS WE THROW A HUGE FINAL EVENT!
All good things must come to an end, but we promise we're going out in style with a super-fun, jam-packed celebrity studded weekend of Stargate style entertainments.

Maybe next year it won't be in Secaucus? Back to East Rutherford, perhaps?

ext_1645: (Hammond -- Yeehaw!)

[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com 2007-09-21 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry - replying while talking to the vet and to my investment advisor. :|

The prof's name is Cliff Rogers. He teaches military history. I'll be at the hotel starting Wednesday. On Thursday, I'll be in Manhattan. Where/when is the play? I don't know that I'll be able to do it but I'd like to have the option.

[identity profile] selmak.livejournal.com 2007-09-21 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Sunday night 8pm is when tricia, tricia's mom, janie and I will be going. It's all of $20.00 or so.

We'll pick up the train at secaucus and go from there. it's on 54th...

Nope Cliff wasn't my instructor. :)

As for the hotel, Creation's been contacted repeatedly by people I know, and they claim they're just moving the hotel to somewhere else in the NJ/NY area.

East rutherford hotel was ok, but the public bathrooms were horrendous. least Crowne Plaza keeps an eye on those.

Hmmm. This will be challenging my organizational skills. Can I pack Saturday night and stay organized on Sunday so that I can go into the City and still get up in the morning on Monday to make a flight.

I don't know 'bout the public restrooms as I only used my room. I remember the lighting *sucked* and I was glad to get away from it. But I'd rather have a hotel with lights AND elevators. But I'm weird that way, I suppose. ;)

I guess we'll know the truth when we hear whether or not they're pre-selling a con in 2008.

[identity profile] selmak.livejournal.com 2007-09-22 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
oh come, come on. You can do it! :) Come play with us in NYC. :)
ext_1645: (Janet -- Troubled / Puzzled)

[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com 2007-09-22 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
I'm very tempted. I'll have to go into The City anyway to eat, probably, as I'm convinced there is no edible food in Secaucus. (Excepting that sandwich shop.) I'd like to give it a definite "maybe." That's going to be a long week of traveling for me and I might well be wanting to sleep before trying to get to the airport early Monday morning.

OTOH, it's always a let down when the hotel empties and there's nobody around to play with after the con. Having a play to look forward to would be very nice. And by now, I'm an expert on getting to and from the hotel to Manhattan. Although I have my doubts as to what sort of theater we're talking, given that the ticket is only $20. :|

I'm regretting my cheapness in spending my frequent flyer miles. :( I could have gotten a later flight out if I'd been willing to use twice as many. Ah well. It's spilt milk now.

[identity profile] triciabyrne1978.livejournal.com 2007-09-21 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Mom and I are flying into the Con Hotel on Thursday and leaving on Monday (the nephews and bro/SIL might come up to visit too).

What time is your flight out?
ext_1645: (Janet -- Troubled / Puzzled)

[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com 2007-09-21 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I fly out Monday morning at 10:30 a.m. I'd rather have caught an early afternoon flight but those would have cost be twice the number of frequent flyer miles. I didn't want to blow all of my points on one trip, so...

When do y'all fly out?

[identity profile] bleekabyebye.livejournal.com 2007-09-22 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
Hello there! Love that Gale icon! My friend, Stacy, and I will probably bump into you the Sunday of the con!
ext_1645: (John -- Wacky Hair (Cyan))

[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com 2007-09-22 01:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee! What better way to advertise the city? Who needs architectural wonders, iconic bridges, patriotic statues when there's GALE? Y'all are just doing Sunday this time? If you're coming just for Michael, then I sure hope he makes it this time. *fingers crossed*

I'm amused to see that Cliff is now considered Sunday worthy.

[identity profile] bleekabyebye.livejournal.com 2007-09-23 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Right on, Gale! Yep, we're just doing Sunday for Michael. Money is tight this year for both of us, so we are driving out and back the same day. I'm keeping my fingers crossed too!
ext_1645: (Gale Harold -- Torso)

[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com 2007-09-24 11:40 am (UTC)(link)
I understand the money tightness. We've decided to buy a house - finally - so every dollar I spend is a dollar taken from a house. Usually the con is my splurge for the year but this time around I'm looking to spend as little as possible.

[identity profile] bleekabyebye.livejournal.com 2007-09-25 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
Houses will drain you of money! We have a house that's over a hundred years old, so you can imagine we have a "money pit" on our hands! Neverending spending is what my dad says about owning a house. See ya!
ext_1645: (Ackles -- Eep! (anim))

[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com 2007-09-25 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
Eeep! Don't say that! I'm extremely nervous about committing to home ownership. Probably related to my own commitment issues but also because I was raised by two people who seem to be utterly hopeless when it comes to real estate. I'm very fearful of ending up living in a house where I can't afford to replace the air conditioner, or a leaky roof, or a cracked foundation (huge problem here with our soils; it's pretty much inevitable), or any number of daily bank account drains: replace flooring, termites, replacing shower pans in the bathroom, electrical issues, and on and on. Not to mention the cost of painting and decorating and landscape and all the other things that are part of "nesting."

[identity profile] bleekabyebye.livejournal.com 2007-09-25 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
OMG! I truly understand! We've been living here since '98, and we're still fixing up. We had major kitchen floor damage because of termites. Our floor literally dipped in the middle because the beams under were so bad. Just had to have our septic tank replaced this year because it was a metal tank and not up to code. Yep, homeowning is a scary thing! I still say it beats renting. I just feel that is money you're flushing down the commode. I know people who are paying only a few hundred dollars less per month than me and they are only renting.
ext_1645: (Alec -- Horror)

[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com 2007-09-25 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
At least septic tanks are something we won't have to worry about. *blink*

Our rent is dirt cheap because the guy who owns the house can't be bothered to find out what the neighborhood can demand. We will just almost triple our monthly payment when we buy if we want to stay in this neighborhood. That puts a serious crimp in things like excessive travel budgets. Which I know will be worth it, but I do like to plan these 10 day visits to see friends, hunky Stargate actors, and fine art. Of course, what we *should* have been doing is saving it all up so that we'd have more options at this point.

[identity profile] bleekabyebye.livejournal.com 2007-09-25 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
That's great that you don't have to pay too much for rent! When you buy a home, you'll figure out how to make it work so you can still have some fun!

You know what? Life wouldn't be any fun if we didn't spend some money on the fun things we like to do. Hunky Stargate actors are a must! ;-P

[identity profile] jalabert.livejournal.com 2007-09-22 04:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I must have my share of the conversation!

Except that I have nothing to say, except hello from the glorious and hot midwest.

That is all.

Hot? You think that's hot? Pfffffffft!

Brinks came back from the vet. He's nekkid, his teeth are gleaming, and he's whiny. And a bit skittish. He looks good, though, and we have a new and more powerful anti-fungal for his ears.

I've been playing with icons today but my icon fu is flat-lined. Hope that [livejournal.com profile] opinionatedmuse is resting comfortably and that you and C are having a blast while I'm sitting here on my own. *sigh*

[identity profile] mcroft.livejournal.com 2007-09-22 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
So, we leave for Texas on Nov 2, with something the next weekend in Houston, at which we hope to see you.

Is the 30th in Lawrenceville (or stationed out of Lawrenceville) a possibility? I may be able to take time off fromwork, and we do have a guest room...
ext_1645: (Heroes -- Hiro "I Will Save You!")

[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com 2007-09-23 11:53 am (UTC)(link)
Of course the 30th is a possibility! I thought you and [livejournal.com profile] immlass were going to be in Texas by then. Hey! This time I'll have my own Apple laptop - woo hoo! - and I'd love to kick around town (or wherever) with y'all. Besides, I should definitely take advantage of the free guest room while I can. Who knows how long it will be before you are in Austin and I'm bumming a guest room from you there? ;)

I forgot to add -- yes, I do plan to see you and [livejournal.com profile] immlass in whatever Houston plans are made. I'm looking forward to it, in fact!

Bad news - Steve Bacic is no longer attending the con. he's got a job.

:(
ext_1645: (Alec -- Horror)

[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com 2007-10-11 11:42 am (UTC)(link)
CRAP! I was really looking forward to him. I saw him a little at Gatecon and he, uh, made an impression. In Gatecon fashion, he was always onstage with a bunch of other guys so I was looking forward to staring drooling listening to just him.

And so it begins. I wonder who else will cancel before the event? My money is on MS canceling.

[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com 2007-10-11 11:46 am (UTC)(link)
The good (?) news is that they'll have to replace him with someone because Tony Amendola is a great guy but I don't think he's enough to hold down Friday all on his own. Wonder who they'll get?

Hee! I'm spamming you this morning. That'll teach you to comment on my entry. ;)

I'm looking at the website and I see that tickets to Kate Hewlett's play can be purchased in advance. Have y'all already bought your tickets or are you planning to buy them at the door? I'll be flying out two weeks from tomorrow (eeeeeee!) so I need to handle this pronto.

[identity profile] selmak.livejournal.com 2007-10-11 04:14 pm (UTC)(link)
you can buy them online and you print off the ticket. If you lose that you can give them ID and you're let in. You should probably buy it in advance, just so you're not wandering around in NYC by yourself.

Which while fun, isn't probably as fun as where we will be. :)

Hee! It might be necessary. They have the "guaranteed" call service, though the one time I used it, they didn't call but they did call me at 3 a.m. on some other morning. I decided to take my chances with the radio alarm instead. :|
