Daniel led SG-1?

My SG-1 Season 10 DVDs just arrived!!! Has anyone else read the back blurbage? It says:

"And now, in Season 10, the team, led by Daniel Jackson (Michael Shanks), embarks on their ultimate adventure."

I know that some people think Michael Shanks and Ben Browder look a lot alike but that's odd. And the cover stars Sam's breasts. Sometimes it's good to be reminded why it was time to call it quits on the show. :|

Well that certainly doesn't make sense. :S
I thought Ben and AT would be the leaders? :S

As you note, either Mitchell or Sam could have been named as the "leader" and I think it's clear that Ben Browder was considered the star of the show based on the order of the credits. It's very poor copy and I hate to see it paired with the breast-centric Barbie-stance they gave Sam on the cover.

A friend of mine who's a *big* Daniel fan noticed that right away. Her half-in-jest comment was: "About time they noticed!" LOL. Hey, we all have our preferences. ;-)

Me, I was too distracted by Adria and her funky eyes.

I do like the silvery style Stargate. It *almost* detracts from Sam's boobilage.

Yes, I'm a glass half full kind of gal, why do you ask? ;-) Off to watch 200 extras do some work.

Oh, I'm definitely a HUGE Daniel fan and I'm not sorry to see him mentioned -- but I'd rather that they had people who watch the show write the copy. I'd also like to see all of the team acknowledged in an accurate manner.

Don't get me started on the front photo. I hate, hate, hate that they posed Sam like a Barbie doll. Just imagine how ridiculous it would look if Teal'c were posed like that. Or Cameron. Or Daniel. It's insulting.

I"m excited to see the extras -- and I'm peeved over the ad that promises me "never before released extras" if I re-buy all ten seasons in the huge multipack coming out some time in the future. :|

I know. Wasn't there five members of this team for over half the season? I seem to remember another girl. :-p

I don't really care too much about the cover because it's just going to sit in a shelf in my closet against the wall and S9, so...

There's TWO 200 commentaries! And a behind the scenes! And and...whee!

Amazon's selling the series set for $210...but still...no. I'm thinking of writing MGM and asking for them to stick them on the movie disks too. I love how they advertise the movie set INSIDE the S10 dvd. Snerk. Well I guess not everyone is pathe...er, devoted enough to have bought them all already. heh.

It's true that the slip covers don't matter as much as the content of DVDs themselves but I tend to bristle over yet another stunning example of the ignorance of gender issues in the Stargate SG-1 franchise. *sigh*

I can hardly wait to explore the DVDs, myself. It'll make a nice diversion from today's sober chore of picking up my little dog's ashes.

Even as a Daniel fan, I've never mistaken him for the leader of SG-1. He didn't need to be to be a great character.

Hated, hated, hated. That wasn't the Daniel I know and love. What I love about Daniel, other than his being an archaeologist, is that he is able to deal with extreme provocation and take his ego out of the situation. That was not the Daniel I know and love. To be truthful, though, I haven't seen much of that Daniel in later seasons -- just as I didn't see my much loved Sam or Jack in later seasons. Only Teal'c was reasonably consistent though I tend to think that's due to neglect of the character.

No kidding! CB isn't ANYWHERE on the slip case. She seems like a better choice than Adria for the back cover if they're insanely insisting on limiting the front cover to only four characters. If they'd posed Sam as a competant soldier rather than Boob!Babe, they'd have had plenty of room to include Vala. (Although Vala would have been believable as a Boob!Babe character.) I cannot figure out who put together this layout but I'm guessing nobody involved watched the show. *shakes head*

As for the extra extras, I plan to rely on my good internet buddies and I'll feel no guilt whatsoever on the topic if they don't make the goodies freely available to those of us who already purchased all 10 seasons.

I occassionally read J Mallozzi's blog (I know, I know) and he's always said that MGM are the ones responsible for the dvd stuff, so I dunno, maybe it was all beyond their control. :/

The more I look at the cover, the more I wish they'd picked a different picture for Sam. I love the character of Sam, but I hate that they made her lead with her chest. She's a much more kickass character than that. *sigh*
ext_1645: (Sam -- Beauty)

[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com 2007-07-25 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
You're a braver person than I. It makes sense that MGM would be responsible for the DVD art and blurbage. And I can even see how, given the vast Sony catalog that it's just not possible to review everything as well as they'd like. But SG-1 is their #1 syndicated earner and this was the historic and final 10th season...seems to me they could have found someone, somewhere within the company who'd watched Season 10. It wasn't THAT bad! ;)

Exactly! Sam is posed in a way that says, "I'm all about these giant boobs!" It undermines what I love about her and what I think makes her so wonderful. And it emphasizes what I hate about what they did to her at times. Thinking that some troglodyte who'd never seen the show Photoshopped together a bunch of promo photos and used the standard, "Oh, the woman is on the show because she's sexually attractive" viewpoint. That's why I hate it so much -- 'cause Sam *is* kickass.

After the slipcase art came out, someone asked and was told that "they" wanted to stick with the four-person framed by a gate they'd been using for 9 years. Which makes sense, so I expected Vala to be elsewhere. Guess not.

I'm not a Vala fan, but it does seem odd she's not included when TPTB were singing her praises so much. I do know that actors have the right to approve their images that will be used on items, so perhaps that's coming into play here.

I learned this after a brouhaha about an SG-1 card collection in which the binder didn't have a picture of the team, but only Sam and Jack. Let's just say some folks were raising holy hell about it. ;) They were told that each vendor is given a certain number of images they can use for their product, but the actors have final say-so over how it looks, so if 1 out 4 of the cast doesn't like how the team shot looked, then that image is out. IIRC, it was never said who was the one who cast the nay vote, but it could have been one who essentially voted themselves off the cover, or it could have just as easily been one who still remained on the cover too.
ext_1645: (Team -- Old Style (anim))

[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com 2007-07-25 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm just anal enough about balance and symmetry that the "4 in the Gate" theme makes a warped sort of sense to me. I wouldn't have chosen to do that, but I kind of get it.

I had no idea that actors retained the ability to approve their images. It seemed as if they should but I didn't know if that was industry standard or not. Who knows, maybe CB didn't approve whatever monstrosity they'd cooked up for Vala. I'd still liked to have seen her on the slipcase.

I'm in a weird place regarding Vala. Before she was added, I had just reached a Zen place where I was no longer watching because I really cared about Daniel or Sam or Jack or even Teal'c -- and I certainly wasn't watching for excellent story telling. I was watching solely because the eye candy factor and I'll admit that the costume department finally stepped up to the plate and sexed 'em up. Given that characterization had taken a back seat to the far more shallow aspects, Vala didn't really upset my apple cart. I was annoyed that Michael played Daniel as Mono-Mood, permanently peeved, but he was still cute and sleeveless so...*shrug*

If I'd still been watching for the love of the show, I'd have hated Vala because she was written at the expense of the other characters. Kind of like Rodney, she was more interesting to the writers and played by a brilliant actor. She dominated in a way I thought compromised the team as I loved it. Like I said, though, I'd reached my Zen Zone so while I'd love to have seen her and Sam bond as former hosts or seen something real written for her, she didn't stop the man scenery parade so I couldn't get chuffed.
nialla: (Plot)

[personal profile] nialla 2007-07-25 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
The "four in gate" thing didn't bother me much, because of not only symmetry, but 9 years of history of it being done that way. I always thought the gate image itself was just way too small, and prefer the concept of what Atlantis is trying to do with their cover art -- part of the gate as part of the image, not as a literal frame. The "gate as frame" concept is rather dated when compared to more current DVD boxed sets.

I had no idea that actors retained the ability to approve their images. It seemed as if they should but I didn't know if that was industry standard or not. Who knows, maybe CB didn't approve whatever monstrosity they'd cooked up for Vala. I'd still liked to have seen her on the slipcase.

I was only told this in regards to the collector's card issue, but now that I think on it, that's a third-party vendor. You'd think MGM itself could use whatever images they wanted.

I understand what you mean about the Zen place. Though I have two minds about it. Just like I have my "canon mind" and "fanon mind" I have my "oh, arm porn and slash bait!" mind and my "my poor show is dead and spinning in its grave over what's on the air now" mind. I wish TPTB could have given us a bit of the best of both worlds -- a main course of well-told stories with a side dish of fan service.

Vala was played by a great actress, and I've said before that if she were a character on any other show, I probably would have enjoyed her, but I could just never accept the military sending out someone in pigtails and shiny barrettes, not unless they wanted her to get shot, and the rest of the team with her. The "they're real people dealing with alien situations" angle of the earlier seasons had great appeal for me, so while this was a small thing in the grand picture, I just couldn't suspend my disbelief enough to imagine Vala would ever be a real part of the team. Sad to say, the show got too sci fi for its own good. ;)
nialla: (Stargate)

[personal profile] nialla 2007-07-25 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
My theory for the lack of Vala is she's there, she just got bounced out of the frame by Sam's boobage, and possibly suffered injury as a result. She's talking lawsuit, the SGC is talking about tossing her back through the gate if she tries calling a lawyer. ;)

Hmmm... now that I think about it, there was controversy in season 9 about whether Mitchell or Carter was in command of SG-1, with the writers coming up with that "co-command" nonsense offscreen. Now we know who's really been in charge!

I was chatting about this in someone else's LJ, and we've come up with the theory they use dartboards to come up with the words for the text on the boxes. Either that or a version of the "refrigerator poetry" magnets with Stargate related words they just move around until it sounds like it might have something to do with the show.

Even if they don't have people who watch the show doing this sort of work, it looks like they'd have someone who does watch the show proofread it.

I guess that *does* explain the co-command idiocy.

I like the dartboard theory; that nicely explains the results. I'm sure it's some bored, lowly paid copywriter who comes up with these blurbs but it seems rather damning that the company can't find anyone in their employ who actually watches their product to write/proof. :|

I noticed early on that Sam did NOT have the typical physique of the Barbie Doll and I found that refreshingly wonderful. She was proportionally slim and that makes sense for a woman on a field team. That was really the last time I can remember noticing until I saw the promo pics from...Season 7?...when they produced THIS as the Sam promo photo:

I was already not happy over their desire to take my brilliant, cerebral, tough soldier Sam and turn her into a lovesick major moping after her colonel. And, geez, now she looks like a Barbie proportionally.

But seriously -- look at the cover photo on the DVD set. Wouldn't you be wondering what they'd been smoking that day at the photo shoot if everyone was standing in a vaguely heroic pose but Teal'c was turned in a partial profile and had his chest thrust forward, arm out, and hand on hip?

My theory on the shininess of the slip cover is that it's to distract us from the lousy job they did on both art AND words. :)

[personal profile] nialla 2007-07-26 07:19 pm (UTC)(link)
But wasn't season seven when they seemed to drop all pretense at being anywhere near the "thinking sci fi" Showtime ordered up and just sexed it up for all the characters? It's just more obvious with Sam because it looks like she could put someone's eye out with those things.

A lot of fans were making comments about the "arm porn" the guys were sporting that season, myself included, and I think TPTB (more along the lines of Sci Fi, not necessarily Bridge) seemed to take it seriously that's what we wanted to see -- and that's all we wanted to see. Plot and deep thought need not apply.
ext_1645: (DeeJ -- Nekkid)

[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com 2007-07-26 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it was. I spent a whole season being livid and upset. Sure, I appreciated the guys' forays into sexiness but I hated what it did to the characterization and plot lines. Finally I had to choose to stop watching or find a zen place where I could watch for what it was they were willing to give me: sexed up team.

I would *prefer* to have a more cerebral, Gate-based sci fi show about a first contact team exploring the galaxy. No matter how much I love to stare at Michael Shanks, I would choose the old show with someone else as Daniel over the newer seasons with Michael Shanks had I been given a choice.

I could eventually accept the leftovers because the eye candy is of particularly good quality. However, there are lots of cerebral, interesting, strong men on television while there aren't a lot of cerebral, interesting, strong women on television. The undermining of Sam - who was touted in interview after interview for YEARS as a strong woman who broke the mold of what women on tv were allowed to do - so that she could be mostly exposition-spouting, angst-generating eye candy rankled more and took me longer to become zen over because it was a keener loss.

(Also? I kind of felt like Michael Shanks and RDA stopped caring and were almost phoning in their performances a lot of times whereas Amanda Tapping and Christopher Judge seemed to continue giving it their all. I hate to see the waste of both a great character and a great actor who is giving it everything she has so that rankled a bit more, too.)
nialla: (Stargate)

[personal profile] nialla 2007-07-28 06:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I know RDA had been wanting to leave for a while, but felt the burden of all the people who were dependent on him for their continued employment, since at that time the show was considered a "vehicle" for RDA. I think that translated into boredom/resentment which in turn meant inappropriate adlibs and general phoning it in.

With MS, I'm always reminded of the saying about being careful what you wish for, because you just might get it. MS had been fighting for a long time for his character, both for the integrity of the character and to keep his status as co-lead, and by the end of season five was essentially told the show didn't need his character anymore, it could focus on Jack and Sam instead (both in the military and romantic sense), with Teal'c and some generic character added to give the historybabble as their backup.

Some fans pitched a fit and eventually MS did come back, but I have to wonder if he felt he "owed" the fans his time being on the show, but didn't feel it was worth fighting for anymore and just sort of went with whatever TPTB cooked up. Add onto this he had a family to support, so it was probably a lot easier to just go in, do the work and go home, leaving the work behind at the end of the day. I know a lot of fans who continued to watch just to see Daniel back, even if they didn't necessarily like where things were headed.

AT and CJ never seemed to be in "fighting" mode as much, either because they never felt the need or because they wanted to lay low and remain employed. I do know that even AT has said that one time when she made a suggestion about something, she left the room feeling lucky she still had a job.

[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com 2007-07-30 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm torn on the MS and RDA situations because I can empathize but as a fan I hate the outcome, whatever the reasons. On the one hand, I've heard background info that makes me sympathetic to them. I know RDA wanted to leave far earlier and I was pretty clear that MS came back because it was a steady paycheck and because it allowed him to be in Vancouver with his not-yet wife. I'm sure he returned to the show knowing he'd lost and would be doing whatever they told him. Like filming a nude scene in Vancouver in February in a public park. He was but one of a long line of people who loved Stargate and were screwed by Bridge.

But I had a lot invested in Jack and Daniel and the team and I feel let down as a fan that they let real life issues intrude on their performances. It's entirely human and I don't know that I could have worked for years under a grueling schedule of filming a show that didn't interest me while being a parent and done even a tenth as well. I'm just very sorry that my passionate and compassionate Daniel devolved into grimaces and that my competent and wily colonel devolved into Homer Simpson.

Awwwww, thank you. It was an extremely hard decision; knowing it was right for him does not make it right for me. I lost the best dog in the entire world six years ago to bone cancer that we fought -- surgery, radiation, chemo...nothing worked. Cancer is evil. I know how hard it is and you have my deepest sympathies. Their deaths are always hard but what they give us in life makes it worth every tear and every sniffle.

I'm a dog owner but I adore kitties, too. I've had some excellent cats in my life and your Sonja looks like a true sweetie, all cuddled up. It takes a fellow pet owner to know how much it hurts to lose one. *HUGS*
