Poll Time!

I hadn't announced it since I didn't know if I'd actually use it but I have a graphics journal, [livejournal.com profile] isapiens. As a reader/graphics junkie, I like graphics journals and so I'm thinking to move the graphics there. If I do, I'm undecided on continuing to announce them here in my own personal LJ, which means ticky boxes. :)

I mostly want to see them in only one place--either here or the graphics comm.

Amen. I end up with multiple copies of posts from other people because of cross-posting to icon comms as it is. I'm not looking to flood f-lists and ending up annoying people rather than inviting them to play.

I only want to post in one place, really. If you saw my mysterious ability to post a comm post into my own LJ before I caught it and deleted (hey, the preview was in the comm style), then it's obvious that posting in two spots is beyond me. At least, it is before coffee in the morning. OTOH, I find it annoying to play hopscotch across LJ trying to follow some people I like as they have a personal LJ, a graphics LJ, a fic LJ, an LJ about their dog, a comm where they hold forth with recs for other people's fic, and so on.

Maybe the answer is to just close the graphics comm? I thought for a long time that you were the only unfortunate looking at it since I didn't pimp it but it looks as if two other people found it when I was looking and I know how nice it is, especially when my interests only tangentially overlap with a good graphics person, to be able to just look at the pretties without getting involved in her daily life. Thus, the indecision.

Post to the graphics comm and mention in your LJ the next time you post here that you've done so, maybe?

I've given up on friend-of-friend almost completely because of the crossposting of fic. I get 4-5 posts of the same fic and it makes friend-of-friend unskimmable.

That's probably the best answer all around; seems like a workable compromise to me. Without teaser pics and all, it would be a small, easily scrolled past note.

I haven't helped you with that whole friend-of-friend thing, have I? I tolerate a high repeat rate because I've sorted everything on filters specifically to minimize that. I have a "daily read" filter, an "icon" filter, a "Stargate" filter, a "Real Life Friends" filter, a "Queer as Folk" filter, and on and on. It would be nice if they'd let you exclude comms from friend-of-friend.

Enh. I mostly notice it with SPN and TW/DW. And I have a lot of friends who are into each of those.

Awwww...you're too good to me. *huggles you* I see we're going to get high off the mutual incense burning again. :)

I'm trying to find a balance and how to make it work best. [livejournal.com profile] paddies has already weighed in about not wanting to add another comm and I'm holding that as important as her f-list is frighteningly huge in size and I respect her need to control its size since she actually reads it ALL and responds to a healthy chunk of it.

*lights incense and assumes cross-legged positon*..I await your decsion my lady...*g*...but I can see your point, my list is getting pretty big too...I thought about making a seperate journal for my icons but then said nah...I'm too lazy....lol(which reminds me...I need to work on a batch tonight...doh)

Ser-yus-ly, ossifer, it's a contact high. I didn't inhale. Well, not exactly...

Yay for new iconses! Yes, you definitely work on some new ones tonight. *nods*

I have kind of figured that anyone who really didn't want to read the hum-drum everyday stuff but wanted to see my icons could track posts in my LJ tagged "icons." That's what I do instead of friending for a small group of people whose work I adore but whose interests rarely intersect with mine. I don't know, though, that everyone knows it's an option or even if that's a "paid accounts only" feature.

I'm waaaaay too lazy. Posting it here, pimping it over hill and dale, and then remembering to add the entry to my own graphics journal proves more work than I want to put into it. There are also some limitations on posting in a comm - stickies, dating out-of-order, and so on -- that I avoid here in my personal LJ. Decisions, decisions...

[identity profile] paddies.livejournal.com 2007-07-10 06:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Awwwwwwwwwwwww....you really shouldn't make decisions based on what I think, seriously. ;))

It's just... I don't like having too many comms on my f-list, I'm weird like that. I love livejournal for the people and even tho I love and adore some comms, I definitely prefer personal journals as an "every day" lj thing.

I do understand the need of an icon comm, tho (I pondered that same need many, many times, but I rarely post anyway, so hopefully people who check out my journal just for the icons don't get too annoyed with the occasional non-icon posts... also, I always cross post to the specific-for-the-fandom icon community) and if you'd started to post your icons only on your icon comm, I'd definitely defriend one of the communities I have friended (I don't read half of them anyway) to friend you. :-)

Ah, but what you failed to realize is that there are a few, key people who I think might conceivably care how I post and this poll was meant to gauge their opinions. I'm happy to get ideas from others as well but I wanted to make certain that whatever I choose works for those who would be actually reading my LJ. :)

[livejournal.com profile] immlass had a good suggestion if I decide to keep the graphics LJ: post there but just put a link/announcement here. That way, those who are on both see the icons only once, those who don't care about icons can scroll past a little thing, and those who care about icons but not anything else, can friend over there and just get the goods. You wouldn't have to do anything. Or, I could just get rid of the graphics LJ.

I don't find your non-icon posts boring and, truthfully, I *like* getting to know the people behind the art. Sometimes, though, someone's life is so different from mine and their fandoms aren't mine so all of the squee and happiness is lost on me. That's when I'm grateful for the icon LJ. Also? I have no idea how you do it for your 93024789258125061278545 f-list members but I can barely keep track of those wonderful people whose lives are currently on my f-list. I'm often reluctant to add more and a graphics LJ allows us to sort ourselves better as to why we're on each other's f-list.

I think this is the best compromise. If I keep the graphics LJ. While I'm dithering, people are adding it and now I feel weird about deleting it. I'm going to try this route and if it doesn't go well then I can always change.

[identity profile] paddies.livejournal.com 2007-07-11 02:34 pm (UTC)(link)

I think it's a wonderful idea. :-)

Sometimes, though, someone's life is so different from mine and their fandoms aren't mine so all of the squee and happiness is lost on me.

Ah, I totally understand that and to be honest, when people have such different interests/fandoms/passions I kinda skip their posts... ;))
Also, not all my 435983645276902 friends write at the same time (thankfully) so it's really not that difficult to keep up with things...:-)

Abut icon journals...I love the resource ones (brushes, and stuff), but I keep the other icon-journals on my f-list mostly because I cross-post on them (when I do my icon posts)...I rarely check out other people icons (unless they're friends' posts), I guess I'm afraid to "pick up" too much from other people...cropping, fonts, styles...
It can be very inspiring sometimes, especially when I'm having one of my icon-funk times...but it can also be dangerous because I'm afraid I'd get too inspired, you know what I mean? :-)

Oy! That icon is another new one, isn't it? You're trying to melt me. :)

I have a lot of icon communities friended for announcement purposes, too, but I use filters to keep them off of my f-list. When I'm stuck or in a rut or completely out of ideas, I do look through them for ideas but I don't look through regularly. I avoid it because I'm not interested in being trendy or derivative. At least, not any more than I already am. :)

I've always wondered about making an icon journal, but it seems like double the work to remember to post in two places, er, which I guess is your point. Maybe just a mention with a link to your icon journal? But, really, whatever works for you. :)

I've wondered about it, too. The one huge benefit I can see to it is that people who want to see my icons don't have to give me access to their f-locked content in exchange for a convenient way of tracking.

Posting in two places is not a good plan for me and not at all what I want. I already cross-post like mad.

Those who responded to the poll -- and I'm assuming that is the portion of my f-list who would have a strong opinion -- are evenly divided so I suppose they're just like me on this issue. :)

They're ticky boxes! Every tick box poll is required by law to have the gratuitous ticky box option.

You have no choice in the slavish devotion business -- just as I do not. We're stuck with each other and [livejournal.com profile] opinionatedmuse, m'dear, for life. Damned Crazy Glue.

Most people that I know that have graphics journals or fic journals or whatever end up posting them in both places (personal journal, their graphics/fic journal, and then crossposting to 3 - 6 or more communities). I'm not saying that's a good thing. *g* It's just what I see most people doing.

I'm not sure what's best. *g* If your graphics are only in the other journal, I'd friend that also so that I could still see them. I'd probably friend it also anyway, because I'm weird like that. *g*

[identity profile] hsapiens.livejournal.com 2007-07-11 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
Eeeeeeeek! That's precisely what I want to avoid: more work for me. I'm trying to make it easy to find my stuff without it being a royal pain in the mik'ta. I've seen some people who post in both and some who post in only one. Now that I think on it, I think those who post in only one tend to be posting icons, resources, and all sorts of things so that the graphics journal is more active.

Awwww, thank you. :) I have decided no matter what, I'll still be mentioning them here because a few people who I don't want to lose would like an announcement here. So there's no need to go adding to the f-list unless that appeals to you. What I might stop doing, though, is posting the teasers in this LJ. As I'll discuss with you up there in another comment. *points*
