There's a joke, "The last thing I learned in college was bridge," and I'm thinking that bridge:college :: selective color:Photoshop. It's just so much damned fun to play with, though getting too wild with it degrades image clarity, making the pic go grainy. I'm fully aware of the frequent abuse of this nifty keen feature; hopefully I've limited the radioactive abominations to just a few. Perhaps some day soon my honeymoon with selective color will be over but until then, consider yourself warned.

My well of icon-fu was dry for the longest time. I'd open Photoshop, crop a pic, and mutilate it into the ugliest damned square possible before throwing my hands up in disgust, closing everything, and wandering off to do something less annoying. Like listen to talk radio. *grin*

I have no idea why a bunch of Jessica Alba promo pics got me back in the groove...but they did. *shrug* They were fun to play around with and a couple even placed in the stillness community where I got the pics. Go me. Anyhow, my need to jump start my lagging icon-fu led me to looking far and wide for inspirational caps -- thus the smörgåsbord of fandoms here.

I have destroyed more expensive, beautiful paper this way than I care to admit to. Sometimees, the only healthy thing I can do when I have very bad spells of creating Nothing I'd Show To My Gardner Without Expecting To Be Laughed At is go back to my "roots".

I only really have books and a few programs about artists that inspire me to learn from. Those, and abject failures combined with amazing successes. So I pull out a book or rewind a TiVo'd program and read about or watch something that insipred the shit out of me. Then I sit for several days and just think. Then I go into my studio, remember who I am, and GO. The result is often something new and inovative (for me) and I am so proud of it that I don't do anything for 7 more days but look at it and gloat ;)

Tonight was fun as hell. I drank a little, shared some with my kid (which I've never done before- was pretty strange for me, I have to admit) and then went into my studio (garage) with my kid (who paints) and ky hubby (who stitches) and the three of us sat there and did our respective creative things. It was fun as hell.

I miss you. Lets get together and eat and drink stuff that's bad for us and talk about anything that comes to m,ind (Gale Harold). Soon. K? :D

The best thing about making icons is that at least all of my screw ups involve pixels, which costs me nothing. :) I can't explain why sometimes I can click into creativity and sometimes I can't but I had the same problem when I played piano. I mean, it's not like one day I can do math and some days I can't but the ability to create? That's a hit and (all too often) miss prospect for me. I think it's cool that you've found a way to tap into your creative abilities. I'll give that a try because I've never been able to force it -- but I'd like to since it cycles in opposition to available time for putzing with the computer.

I had planned to catch up on Torchwood while Joe was out of town but I've been sick (just an overactive cold/sinus thing) and now I'm dealing with an elderly dog with some sincere problems. I'm awake tonight so I can periodically carry him outside so he can do his business. Poor little guy. :(

LOL! I sure wouldn't mind having been born with her genes. I was marveling at it being promo pics that did the trick because they're usually harder for me to work with since they're "staged" and stiffer than screen caps of characters.

Tonight was fun as hell.
Yay! My night was considerably less exciting but I need the peace for a bit. :) Still sniffling and spraying zinc in my mouth at regular intervals (yuck!) but I've been enjoying some solitude after having nine people for the holidays. I was sickest then (of course) and we have so many December birthdays that we end up having celebrations on both Christmas Eve and Boxing Day. I am sooooooo partied out.

However, getting together in a restaurant where someone else cooks and does dishes while gossiping about the divine Mr. Harold sounds like a wonderful thing to me. My brother's b-day is coming up but I believe that my weekends are free these days (YAY!!! Holidays are over!) so are there any weekends that are especially good for you?

Not strange at all because I set out to make a Hammond icon that wasn't bland. I wanted something that would grab attention. I (obviously) like it but the color and expression are a little disturbing.

Hee! I made the kilt icon long before I heard that Barrowman was considering wearing a kilt to his wedding. Honest. :)

I'm glad #5 made you laugh; I think it's mandatory for Daniel fans to make an icon of that scene. Every time I look at the pic, I hear, "hey little fangirl; want some candy?" I would have also made a "fanboy bait" icon but the fanboys I know aren't reading my LJ.

I love the cap in #13. My first "non-static" icon! Woot! I'm still not happy with the coloring but the cap itself is of less than stellar quality and the color keeps going wonky. I finally gave in and went nuclear with it. I'll probably revisit it at some point because I really think it deserves better color.

Well, I don't know that I've got my mojo back but I've at least managed to scrape together 70 icons that I didn't think I'd cringe over admitting to.

I liked Alba in Dark Angel, hated Fantastic Four (not that I could judge her work there because she was there solely to look good in the spray on spandex while the movie sucked), and I liked her work in Honey. The better half is a huge fan so we have 2 new movies of hers from Cmas to watch. So far, though, I generally like what I see.

You just discovered the shows? That's kind of eerie because I recently did, too. paddies recommended Heroes right before Sci Fi kindly ran a marathon so I could catch up. :) I adore Hiro. I'm still trying to catch up on Torchwood but that's a lot harder given cowardly U.S. broadcasters. *sigh*

I know what you mean. Alec and Logan got so little time together onscreen but that pool game is one of my faves. They're such boys in that scene. They might be genetically enhanced or superwealthy mean but when it comes down to a game, they're overgrown boys. I wish we'd seen them interact more but I think the focus was firmly on Max.

Poor Zack. He totally got hosed in the luck department. *sniffle*
