Another from the wtf files...

I was surfing for a Sock It To Me Cake recipe for Christmas (nostalgia - grandma used to make it for me because I loved it so much as a wee tyke) and I discovered a page of "Southern" desserts made with cake mixes. Scrolling the list, I saw this:

Kitty Litter Cake

Yup, it even has tootsie rolls for that authentically used look for your meal's piece d'resistance. All it's missing is an open dish of ammonia in the next room. Haven't decided if this is the sort of thing that arises from too much mint julep, if it's what you use to make certain the mother-in-law never again visits, or if it's all a conspiracy to make Southerners look stupid.

For the record, I was raised by Southern belle types on the fringe of the South and have never seen anything like this travesty. I'd complain about the recipe not having a picture but I guess you've seen one loaded tray of kitty litter you've seen them all.

I've seen the picture of this. Nasty.

I've seen this before and didn't think it was particularly associated with the South, just teh stupid. Not to mention the gross.

Well, we all know that Southerners are stupid, right? It's common knowledge...*snort*

I don't know. My dad and his family is from the South, and they aren't rich, and we never ate anything remotely close to something like that. And we do enjoy a bunch of Southern foods--cornbread dressing, gravy and biscuits, fried okra, Cuban sandwiches, and my presaonl fave l, boiled peanuts. (No pecan pie or pecan anything for me, thanks.) But I've never heard of it. The closest we got was my great grandmother's fruitcake, which supposedly was to die for. Never would have imagined fruitcake to be that special.

Kudos for the nut that thinks the image of kitty litter and cake would make an appealing dessert combo.

I told a friend on IM about this (I believe in sharing the pain) and she has seen it, too! Not in the South but in Ohio so thankfully this travesty cannot be foisted off on us. Heaven knows the South has plenty answer for, but not this one.

I originally thought it a joke, but apparently there's a market for mixing table and toilet. I'm now informed by the Ohio friend that someone brought a sausage and rice version to work earlier this year. *shakes head*

I was disappointed to find I wasn't enthused by boiled peanuts when I finally got ahold of 'em since I've listened to my uncle wax poetic over them for most of my life. Not bad just not anything to get excited over. I grew up eating TexMex rather than typical Southern fare, alas, so maybe they're something I would have loved had I met them when I was a kid. I'll trade you the boiled peanuts for the pecans. I adore pecans.

I did grow up with ham bits in everything and lots of greens and black-eyed peas. Yum!

Boiled peanuts aren't for everyone. Most people acquire the taste over time. Black-eyed peas? Mmmmm.

Though...

I think I've offically sworn off food for the rest of the day.

sadly yes. The picture I saw the perso who made it even bought a new scoop and put in the pan for "authenticity"

I suppose it's not that different from bringing "Dirt" to a potluck, complete with gummy worms. But...ew.

My eyes! My eyes! Where's the bleach?

I randomly chose one of these monstrosities, and gods as my witnesses, it says, "Our company potluck for the winter holidays is tomorrow. I made my signature kitty litter cake. Always a hit!" *is speechless*

Yanno, I can see that appealing to the 4- and 5-year old crowd. It's the 45-year old crowd I don't get.

I warned you. I think I saw it in Good Houskeeping one year for halloween.
