Dreamwidth is a journal site using cleaned up LJ code that is owned by several people, one of whom is an SG-1 fan fic writer & former LJ employee. It works a lot like LJ but is ad-free and is being developed as a better written code base so that runs faster and is developing its own improvements on LJ.
