From what I'm seeing on my f-list, Don Davis died yesterday. I just...how sad. He was always a pleasure to see and he was a genuinely warm man. I hope that Ruby and Teryl are holding up well. :|
I'm so devastated by that. It seems that everyone who met him saw the same man that I did - warm, honest, genuinely thankful and respectful to all the fans. I didn't even talk to the guy, but he's unforgettable. I can't believe he's gone.
He was a joy to talk to -- and a very sly devil. He'd do this "Aw, shucks, I'm nothing beautiful" thing and invariably the audience would disagree. It was especially effective in small-ish groups of women and would provoke lots of pretty women to shower attention on him. He was a total character. I never saw anything but genuine giving and friendliness in the man. (OK, he could be quietly stubborn with clueless con runners but they earned his willful disobedience. *g*)
What impressed me the most, was his insisting to con goers that it would be his honor and privilege to talk to them if they saw him walking around. It was obvious he meant it.
I may be the only member of fandom who isn't overly impressed with Gary Jones. He has a few good stories and his Mickey Rooney impression was hysterical. I never much liked his Don Davis impression. Not only because I thought there was a twinge of mean-spiritedness to it but also because I thought it wasn't a very good likeness.
But then, I was a Don fangirl so I might have been a wee bit biased. :)
