Sebastian

Sebastian died this morning, a little after 10 a.m.

He came to live with us 6 years ago through the good folks of cocker spaniel rescue. He immediately made himself at home, never happier than when cuddled with Joe on the sofa -- though chasing a ball was a close second. What can I say about a dog that hasn't been said a thousand times before in far more eloquent terms? He was full of love and the gentlest of souls. He loved people, especially men, and made friends of everyone.

His health had been in decline for several years; the pain of crippling arthritis was a constant for him. Complications and further age-related system failures added to his burden. The last 9 months were hard on us, but most especially on him. Late this past week, the heavy duty pain killers and other drugs that bought us the past two weeks were no longer enough and we knew it was time.

Joe and I were with him and it was quick and painless for him; Joe was in his line of sight the entire time, and he was surrounded by love. Knowing we made the right decision didn't make it any easier and it doesn't make me feel any better.

We're adjusting to being able to leave room doors open and I swear I keep hearing him whine so that I'll come and stand him up so he can get a drink of water or find Joe. We'll be okay but it's going to take a while.

Give your pets an extra hug and take a moment to appreciate how wonderful they are. :)
